New Zealand Prime Minister Announces New Raft of Gun Control Measures, Including Registry

Authors Current Events Jordan Michaels This Week

New Zealand is becoming a case study on what can happen when the right to keep and bear arms isn’t enshrined in a country’s governing documents.

Following a decision to ban and buy back all semi-automatic “assault weapons,” Kiwi Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday a massive new slate of gun control measures designed to “stop remaining weapons from falling into the wrong hands.”

“There is a new normal around firearms. It is a change of mindset,” Ardern said at a press conference. “The most dangerous weapons are being taken out of circulation. Our gun laws date from 1983, and they’re dangerously out of date with technology, with trade, and ultimately, with society.”

“We’re enshrining in law that owning a firearm is a privilege and comes with an obligation to demonstrate a high level of safety and responsibility,” she concluded.

Ardern’s new gun control measures are unlikely to receive the near-unanimous support that Parliament granted to the “assault weapon” ban earlier this year. Among the measures already receiving pushback is a registry tying guns to individual gun owners, which would make future firearm confiscation much more difficult to evade.

The full list includes:

  • Establish a register connecting specific firearms with licensed holders
  • Tighten the rules to get and keep and firearms license
  • Tighten the rules for gun dealers and get and keep a license
  • Require licenses to be renewed every five years rather than every ten years
  • Introduce a system of warning flags to police can intervene if they’re concerned about a license holder’s behavior
  • Prohibit visitors to New Zealand from buying a gun
  • Establish a licensing system for shooting clubs and ranges
  • Set up a formal group to give independent firearms advice to police, which will include “people from outside the firearms community
  • Set up new controls for firearms advertising
  • Require a license to buy magazine parts and ammunition
  • Increase penalties and introduce new offenses

“This suite of measures would have made it considerably harder for the terrorist to purchase guns in the way he did,” Ardern said Monday in a statement, referring to the massacre that prompted New Zealand’s change in gun law. “He would have had to pass a good character test and the register would have alerted the police to the type of gun purchases the terrorist was making.”

Ardern began the press conference by celebrating the supposed success of the gun buyback program taking place at collection points across the country. She reported that more than 3,200 firearms had been turned in at the 20 “collection events” since the country banned semi-automatic “military-style assault weapons.”

While that’s more than were turned in before the collection events began taking place, as GunsAmerica reported earlier this month, there are likely hundreds of thousands of now-banned weapons in the country. That places the compliance rate at somewhere between 3.2 and 0.6 percent.

The New Zealand Parliament may have capitulated to the gun ban agenda, but Kiwi gun owners may not be so easy to convince.

The NZ PM should give up any armed agents who protect her as the PM during all official activities and security at her residence.

Don’t kid yourself. None of this is by mistake or by a “knee jerk” response to a shooting. It is all an orchestrated plan to eliminate all firearms to anyone not in a government position. As we see gun control is not about saving lives. It’s about control period. Can’t tell people to stay home and enforce it if they can shoot back. Gun control always will and always will be to take all the guns. They slowly keep picking away at taking this or banning that for “common sense” for when evil shows it’s face. Stand your ground no matter what happens and don’t agree to any control on a god given right. Just say no. More die from drowning in swimming pools or in vehicle crashes every year. They don’t run out and say we need more “control”. They only try to control the thing they fear. I would almost bet that the prime minister of New Zealand just like Canada is being run by the Nazi Soros also. He’s a Nazi through and through. No right to property. No right to self defense. It’s all there. He’s trying to make a fourth reich but using corrupt politicians, courts and elections instead of an army.

A few weeks ago in my area a foreign national driving a loaded tractor trailer crashed into a number of cars on the interstate at a high rate of speed killing and incinerating several people, using New Zelot methods you would ban all large trucks, interstate highways, fuel, cars, etc as we all know far to many have been killed and injured by these things and there is no question they are dangerous.

    • Janet Tomkins May 6, 2020, 8:51 am

Precisely. There is no logic to these types of laws except to make the people totally subject to government whims and unable to defend themselves and their families from the government or other criminals.
Using their logic we should be banning stairs, ladders, bathtubs and definitely anything sharp such as knives. Perhaps we need laws to force government officials to eat their steaks with spoons to give them an idea of how absurd their laws are.

New Zealand to host the next “shot heard round the world”. Welcome to the revolution all you Kiwis.

The right to bear arms exists independently of its recognition by any so-called government. When government moves to take guns, that is the time to use them. The only thing that stops a bully is fear. If the New Zealand government were afraid of even a few of its citizens, it would not be proposing to steal their
weapons. New Zealand had a “reasonable” system of licensing and registration. When it became expedient for political reasons, that system was changed in the blink of an eye. Never, ever, trust a politician. Those who seek power over others, are by definition, mentally deficient or pathological. They need to be kept under close scrutiny at all times, and restrained from going beyond the limited job they are assigned.

Remember Patrick Henry, who said “Give me liberty or give me death.” The love of freedom seems to fade in those societies who have it. Unfortunately, after it is taken away it is very difficult to recover. It is not easy to stage a revolution if the only weapons available to the population are rocks and hammers.

  • MASTERMECH48 July 27, 2019, 8:37 pm

EXACTLY MY POINT! I have to yet see any law that will control the criminals, PERIOD. ALL legislators only pick upon the legal elements which are a POLITICAL EASY “TARGET”. JUST no common sense at all.

Not only is this going on but the internet is being censored , I was not able to see this video in NZ !!! Additionally the NZ Government is using Algorithms to track who is watching what and is being told to people when police visit their homes if they are Trump supporters that the police refer to as white Supremacist and racist , I know this first hand !

  • Mark Chamberlain July 26, 2019, 10:12 pm

Whew! Glad to be in the U.S., where gun ownership is a right…Watching this video was painful: The PM stated that gun ownership in New Zealand (Naziland) is a privilege.

It appears Liberals are stupid no matter where they live on this planet. Exactly what laws stop anyone from doing anything?

  • Son_of_Liberty July 26, 2019, 6:24 pm

Hmm. Glad I don’t live in NAZIland

  • Logan Cress July 26, 2019, 1:14 pm

First comes the registration, then comes the confiscation!
There can be no freedom when a government dictates what you can have or not have!
Sounds like a Dictatorship, walks like a Dictatorship, it must be a Dictatorship!
Next thing could be confiscation of all property and valuables and sending you to a gas chamber!

  • Jake July 26, 2019, 12:27 pm

This woman is a fool. Looks like she has a lot of company as well. A foreigner comes to NZ and kills other foreigners. So of course the idiots want to disarm themselves and their neighbors while Kiwis were not the perpetrators. In the logic of this bird brain, when foreigners shoot up your country you should disarm? I didn’t think anyone could be a bigger moron than AOC and the squad, but guess what?

  • Altoids July 26, 2019, 10:15 am

That Prime Minister’s reaction is exactly what the mass murderer was hoping for.

All you need do is read his manifesto.

She is playing right into his hands, and dragging her countrymen in with her.

Time for the Kiwis to change those politicians who govern them.

Looking at what is being proposed in New Zealand parts of that proposal is what we have had to put up within Canada . Handguns have been registered by law since the 1930 ,s and since that law was enacted all Handguns are classified as restricted or prohibited ( prohibited is a handgun with a barrel length less than 6 inches) . A long gun registry was introduced many years ago by the lefty liberals but repealed by the Conservative Harper gov,t .
All firearms however must be trigger locked , unloaded and keep in a locked cabinet and ammunition kept separate .
You cannot carry a handgun except to a gun range with a special permit to transport , the handgun must be unloaded , trigger locked and unloaded in a locked gun case . with regard to long guns when you travel to hunt the long gun must be trigger locked , unloaded in a locked gun case except when you hunt, the locks come off etc.
The current Liberal gov,t are considering banning all hand guns and what”they think” is a semi auto “assault type rifle , the handgun proposal to ban them is being vigorously opposed .as well as rifle ls such as AR type rifles . The problem is this legal gun owners are being targeted , criminals do not abide by any laws , less than 1 % of shootings here in Canada are being committed by legal gun owners . so it is sexy to go after guys like me because their thinking is they just are anti gun. More murders are committed by stabbing, guess maybe ban knives too I digress!! Here in Canada it is law you must pass a safety gun course to possess or hunt , target shoot etc . I have no issues with a safety course . Any gun owner must be licensed and are called POL ( Possession only License ) or a PAL( Possession Acquisition License, which means you can purchase a firearm , some restrictions apply to handguns such as buying a restricted handgun but unless you have a designation for prohibited handgun you can not buy a prohibited one ) . just some clarity to our friends in the USA .
For US citizens beware you cannot bring a handgun into Canada, it will be confiscated by border agents , If you declare you have one while crossing the border , border agents will take it from you but send it back to US customs and you can retrieve it upon returning to the US . If you do not declare you have one and are caught you lose the handgun and are fined. If you come to Canada to hunt with a long gun a fee of 25 bucks is charged , you can hunt etc but trigger lock the long gun , unloaded in a locked gun case. Every one on this site may or may not know our rules . One thing is for sure there is no such thing as having a firearm for so called protection for legal owners , and you have no protection from criminals who don,t obey the law .

    • cs November 12, 2021, 6:37 am

You don’t quite know your own laws there.
4.17″ is the legal length for a handgun in Canada.
Up until your “mass shooting” in NS, it was less restrictive. I personally took 2 Colt Ar-15’s to Canada. Made a call, had an “ATT” faxed to me. Drove across the border. Nobody even inspected my firearms when I presented the ATT….
Yes it sucks, but until last year was still workable. Guess that’s what happens when you’re a “Subject” and not a “Citizen.

The encylopedia is being reprinted with this womans picture next to the definition of tyranny. Wonder how many Maori gang bangers will be surrendering their weapons.

  • Ti July 26, 2019, 9:00 am

    I was thinking the same.

How VAGUE can you make that – to catch everything not previously imagined or otherwise – wow i can talk like them lawmakers too.

  • Richard White July 26, 2019, 6:43 am

Thank God the founding fathers of these United States had enough foresight to envision the similar lawless acts such as those implemented in New Zealand, to specifically enshrine the Second Amendment into THE BILL OF RIGHTS into The Constitution of The United States of America. It is a basic inalienable human right for one to be able and legally allowed to protect ones self against all foes. foreign and domestic.

  • Leighton Cavendish July 26, 2019, 6:43 am

And the real criminals will just smuggle more in…whenever they want…
perhaps NZ will give up their gun culture altogether at this point

  • John July 26, 2019, 4:10 am

Governments who forget the past, are destined to repeat it. Hitler was a good guy who got elected, and then did exactly what this dumb bitch is doing. 85 million people died because of gun registration and confiscation. That is the total number both military and civilian deaths. Had the Jews and the rest of the population of Germany not turned in their guns, perhaps history might have played out differently. New Zealand citizens had better stand up now, or you just might see a tyrant borne in their midst. When a government has no fear of it’s people, then it’s people are placed in a very precarious position of becoming slaves. America was borne because of a tyrannical king and countries around the world forget that. Had it not been for the gun, our beloved country would never had been. The gun is all that saved us from a tyrant named Obama. Had he been able to get our guns, we would by now be a communist/socialist country. The world has forgotten history. France, England, and others who America had to bail out with our gun culture, have forgotten history and how Hitler gained control of his country and almost wiped out other countries because of exactly what they have done in restricting guns. Canada is another one closer to home who has banned guns. As I said at the beginning, you forget history, and it will most definitely repeat itself. No country is above what happened in WW2, and New Zealand being a small remote country with a small army if ever invaded, can no longer depend on it’s citizenry to help defend the country because it has taken their guns and smashed them. Where as if anyone ever tried to invade the USA it would not only have to contend with it’s military but with some 100 million gun owners. New Zealand you are making a very huge knee reflex mistake reaction to one mans mental madness, and you will pay for this somewhere down the road. The next Hitler or Obama is out there somewhere licking their chops at all the unarmed countries that have done the hard work for them. The easy part of taking out their military’s is just that easy. Having not to contend with an armed citizenry who would fight a guerilla fight has played right into the hands of perspective terrorists.

  • Larry Leonard July 25, 2019, 11:42 am

It’s time for the people of New Zealand to revolt.

    • Dan Milhous July 26, 2019, 12:15 pm

Amen. Time for blood in the streets. Time for cold dead fingers.

  • SuperG July 25, 2019, 10:41 am

“tighten”, “enforce”, “introduce”, “set up”. “establish”, are all ambiguous, and define nothing. The people should be very scared of such open-ended words.

  • Sepp W July 24, 2019, 6:31 pm

My God. Not a word about how it impacts and penalizes law-abiding citizens. Make it so onerous to obtain or possess a firearm it isn’t worth it. I can imagine the liberals here in the US are squealing with glee and wondering how they can implement such a scheme here, in these United States.
