NRA Releases Statement on Bump Stock Ban, Confiscation

(Editor’s note: Below is the NRA’s official statement on the Trump Admin’s bump stock ban.  It was published last Friday.  I’m not going to discuss how I feel about all this, like I’ve done in the past, because what’s done is done at this point.  Time to move forward, and unite as gun owners.)

This week, the Department of Justice announced that it would soon be releasing a final rule classifying “bump-stock-type-devices” as “machineguns” under the National Firearms Act.

These devices came to national attention in October 2017 after the horrific attack in Las Vegas.  As multiple media accounts correctly pointed to at the time, there was overwhelming legislative support for proposals that went far beyond these specific devices and some that could have potentially jeopardized all semiautomatic firearms. Rather than sit back and watch a legislative over-reaction, the NRA asked Congress to let ATF review its prior determinations on bump fire stocks.

Some have used our October 2017 statement to claim that NRA supports ATF’s final rule, but as NRA-ILA’s Executive Director Chris Cox noted only days after our statement was issued, “We don’t believe that bans have ever worked on anything.”

We also made this clear in our comments to ATF on the proposed rule earlier this year. In our comments, we further advised that ATF should at a minimum make an amnesty period available to deal with the fundamental inequity imposed on law-abiding gun owners who purchased their bump fire stocks in good faith reliance on prior ATF determinations. We continue to pursue the availability of a period of amnesty with the administration.

While there can be disagreement on legislative strategy, it’s important to remember that we will soon face a hostile, anti-gun Congress led by Nancy Pelosi. It’s critical that all gun owners unite and prevent the Bloomberg-bought Congress from dismantling our Second Amendment freedom.

    Wayne, Chris and Marion say…

“While there can be disagreement on legislative strategy, it’s important to remember that we will soon face a hostile, anti-gun Congress led by Nancy Pelosi. It’s critical that all gun owners unite and prevent the Bloomberg-bought Congress from dismantling our Second Amendment freedom.”

    Translated to factual intent:

“The NRA has shown its continued willingness to compromise when and where it chooses. It’s fine to sacrifice the entire Bill of Rights, as long as the media keeps pumping the myth that ‘the NRA is the nation’s most powerful gun lobby,’ and you fools keep throwing your money at us. So, please double your contributions and remember the Convention is coming soon…”

Meanwhile, well meaning members continue to rationalize accepting yet another NRA crafted defeat.

  • Bob March 1, 2019, 9:28 am

Unintended Consequences. Nancy Pelosi and every other Rights and Liberties infringing politician, legislator and bureaucrat must be made to genuinely and personally fear the armed US citizenry. If that means some “innocent” goverment employees are harmed, well, they should have chosen different employment.

  • David Robinette December 30, 2018, 8:12 pm

    What fooking bump stock?

  • DarryH December 30, 2018, 1:36 pm

Too little too late you bunch of a__holes!!!!! I am a long time life member, and I am totally disgusted and extremely infuriated by the NRA’s lack of a backbone on this issue!!!!! You just allowed a “PART” to be banned. What next, magazines, bolts, stocks, etc. The ATF had declared these legal several times over, so now the NRA allows for a heck of a lot of it’s member to potentially be felons. Great thinking!!!!!! The NRA will lose a lot of members, a lot more potential members will never join. and the anti-gun communist forces in this country and others just gained a lot of ground, I want to tell you to rot in H_ll over this!!!!!!

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 7:43 am

Sadly, you’re not quite correct. For every woke member that leaves, 10 more drones will take their place. The NRA’s media craft is a lot better than the leftist news outlets, and a lot more dangerous to the Bill of Rights.

  • Ted December 29, 2018, 7:42 pm

I personally didnt like the bump stocks, but would NEVER support a ban on them ! If i had purchased one , and they passed an ACTUAL LAW that made them illegal, i would reply to their question with about where my bump stock is with :
    WHAT BUMP STOCK ??

  • RANDY THOMAS December 29, 2018, 5:43 pm

I have been a long supporter of the NRA but this will be the last straw. If they let this unconstitutional thing happen, and to be taken away from us U.S. citizens, we have lost our freedoms! I may cancel my membership. We got screwed big time back in the 30’s by letting the government take away full auto weapons. They were legal and “NOT INFRINGED” upon. You could go down to your local hardware store and buy one. Now, you have to pay a $200 tax on each gun just to own one and it takes 6 months to get it passed. Then, if you want to sell it, the buyer has to go thru the same thing to buy it from you! And the store price of a full auto??? Most of us can not afford it.
So one day some intelligent people over many years came up with cheap ways, that are “LEGAL” for the rest of us to be able to have a so-called-auto. It really does not work that great but it lets you have an idea what it s like and have a little fun. For the most part, you cant afford to shoot that many bullets….it wears out the rifle barrel quicker and you cant hit a darn thing as it wonders all over the place as you shoot it. All in all, it lets an average person shoot an auto a couple times a year.
This stock is completely legal. If they pass this and inforce it, our country is doomed. The lease they could do is to list it as a class-3 which would make everyone have to list it as full auto when attached. That alone, would give them a lot of money which is what they want.
For god’s sake, this horrible Vegas shooting only happened once and hopefully, never again. The idiot in Vegas was a fruit cake. Thank goodness it was not a bomb.
By the way, I was in Vegas that night.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 7:44 am

IDK what you’re waiting for. The NRA has been supporting “reasonable gun control” since 1871.

  • S Fman December 29, 2018, 11:43 am

Milk Toast mild is proof enough for me that another group must rise and replace the NRA. They are firm swamp dwellers
There is another group that has already filed suit on this matter.

    • bob January 12, 2019, 1:56 am

GOA, the only true take no prisoners, no compromise gun advocacy group. The NRA compromises on a lot of issues. Now I’m not saying I’m dropping my membership, I’m not, no group is going to appease 100% of it’s members. Just like everything Trump does makes me happy, it doesn’t. I’m willing to stand with both groups I’ve mentioned.

  • Wildbill December 28, 2018, 10:52 pm

I was an NRA member for many years, what finally drove me away was there constant fund raising they spent more money than my dues asking for more money.I finally realized they were in it just for the money and also they haven’t changed with the times they keep doing business the same old way. Wayne Lapierre needs to go and as for Ollie North he was up to his neck trading guns for dope.

  • Doug December 28, 2018, 7:44 pm

It doesn’t matter what they ban, regulate and tax, it’s all unconstitutional, unlawful and illegal according to the Constitution of the United States, It’s all infringements!
The Second Amendment does not differentiate between one gun or another.

  • Richard Lampe December 28, 2018, 5:42 pm

Thomas Jefferson said “The remedy for evil men is not the abrogation of the rights of law abiding citizens. The remedy for evil men is the gallows.”
While 1 person supposedly used bump stocks to break the laws and shoot at people and kill some , 100’s of thousands of bump stocks sat idly by in closets and gun safes not breaking any laws. Next it will be BINARY triggers, Match grade triggers, BMF activators then semi-auto weapons . The Gun Grabbers will settle for nothing less, however they seem to forget that the kill ratio of number of people killed vs Number of fired rounds proved the inaccuracy compared to a rifleman with a scoped rifle .
In 1968 Congress passed the GCA and authorized 3 amnesty registration periods. ATF did ONLY 1 and has refused to give us another Amnesty claiming..”It would jeopardize ongoing Investigations” . In 1968 we did NOT have the Communication systems we had now and lots of people never heard it on the AM radio or if they were lucky enough to have TV and as Such many weapons brought back from wars never did get registered and are now illegal because of it. ATF should be pushing registration so they can have a better handle on what is where but common sense seems to be lacking in our whole Damn Government.
Ironic, that only 1 (Might be 2) registered Machine guns have ever been used in a violent crime.
The 86 FOPA act was a scam and an Improper vote in the middle of the night bans post 86 machine guns from civilians. We Gun Owners got SCREWED and we are getting screwed more and more each day with silly laws that do nothing to stop a criminal. Enough is Enough ! NRA has let me down as a Life Member I am not happy with the current Boneheads running it. GOA , CCKRBA, and NAGR seem to be fighting more for us than playing political Pattycake that does nothing for our rights.

  • Jaime December 28, 2018, 5:04 pm

The FPC has already filed a claim challenging the ATF/DOJ “bump-stock ban”. https://www.firearmspolicy.org/fpc-v-whitaker. Counsel for FPC is Tom Goldstein one of the nation’s most experienced Supreme Court practitioners.

The GOA has stated they will file their own claim against the ATF after the law goes into effect. The GOA might be avoiding a ripeness issue.

The NRA has stated that the bump-stock ban is “unfortunate”.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 7:47 am

The NRA doesn’t want the peasantry enjoying simulated full-auto. That only means fewer peons trying to save and buy a real NFA weapon, which would depress the value of actual full auto guns.

  • FrogHill December 28, 2018, 4:18 pm

Don’t leave out the fair weather, rabid, “Gun Rights” defenders that scream bloody murder about a politician, or group of politicians stealing our gun rights away and then turn around, within days and eagerly comply with these idiotic “Gun Law” that are pushed through by the agents of the demimonde class

  • Chuck Thomas December 28, 2018, 2:51 pm

History proves that actions of bad people increase crime. Restrictions on inanimate objects such as firearms, parts or knife bans have never reduced crime but have repeatedly been used to increase tyranny.
The bump-stock ban opens the door for democrats & illegitimate government agencies to ban more firearm components.
President Trump & the NRA made a stupid knee-jerk reaction to ban bump stocks, just another assault against citizens 2nd Amendment rights to appease the anti–american democrat party & media.

~ If patriotic americans fulfilled their lawful constitutional obligation to enforce Oath Of Office Contracts & used evidence provided by public records to promptly oust corrupt public servants ,,, there would likely be no swamp, leftist democrat party, rinos or open borders ~

  • Rollin L December 28, 2018, 2:38 pm

Funny, after making extremely divisive statements in the immediate aftermath of the Las Vegas tragedy- and you merely have to look at the NRA statement issued, and LaPierre’s comments on TV- they now claim they want us to unite with them. BS. They claim there was danger in Congressional expansion if the issue was taken up legislatively, yet they are forced to admit that the regulatory process has done the same. Acute shortsightedness has always been a feature of the NRA. Time for Wayne, Marion and their cabal to go away and let the Knox wing return to control of the org. The same Knox wing that Wayne, Marion, Milius and others so insidiously undermined, in sinister back-door fashion, to take power years ago.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 7:50 am

Acute short-sideness is actually the fault of NRA members, who didn’t revolt a few decades ago. The NRA has been in the business of working hand in hand with governments to craft “reasonable gun control,” since 1871.

  • ToolsforLiberty December 28, 2018, 2:10 pm

The NRA is now trying to parse their own words. They showed weakness in the face of the Bump Stock craziness which gave Trump (who is not an ideologue), cover to push this “ban” through where the Obama admin realized they could not. By doing so, the NRA vis a vis Trump have paved the way for the next Democrat President to “redefine” other regulatory terms in order to further encroach on our freedom. For example, if a Bump Stock (a piece of plastic) is equivalent to a “machine gun”, what’s to stop the left from claiming there is NO difference between “full auto” and “semi-auto”. In their minds and the minds of the mindless public they are the same thing. Afterall they both will automatically load subsequent rounds as long as there are cartridges in the chamber. Lastly, in 2018, anyone and everyone can use a 3D printer to print a bumpstock if they really want one.

  • J Davis December 28, 2018, 2:04 pm

So let me get this straight . ONE guy commits a crime ……and we all pay the price ? I don’t own a bump stock . To me they are just a novelty. Sort of like the old crank triggers . But i think you should be able to own what you like. Innocent until proven guilty not guilty until proven innocent. We REALLY need to stand up to this kind of *#@*(crap) NOW ! Or we are just leaving the door open for more.

    • Winston December 28, 2018, 4:35 pm

Paddock- the overweight ageing gambler and foodie- did not shoot anyone. Someone using an M240 7.62mm MG did. Watch the videos with audio and listen to the 600rpm action. Never saw any blood on the concert venue grounds, and there no cell phone video of anyone bleeding nor shot dead. Pretty much everything in the US is a lie.

      • Cody March 29, 2019, 7:54 am

You, sir, are on to something. In fact, the recordings seem to indicate there were multiple weapons being fired simultaneously. But the M-240 report was definitely distinguishable.

  • kb31416 December 28, 2018, 2:00 pm

I have no personal interest in bump stocks, or other tools designed for high speed ammo wasting. (I prefer to score hits with my ammo, rather than just burning it to make noise).
The biggest problem I have with this is establishing the precedent that objects can be banned by executive fiat, rather than the normal legislative process. What would have happened if Obama thought that he could direct his ATF to classify ARs or AKs as machine guns? Sure, they are not, but then again, neither is a bump stock, at least until now, and only due to a rule issued by some un-elected deep state bureaucrat.
This proposed (implemented) ban is unconstitutional in many ways, including taking without compensation, not to mention the 2A issue, and total disregard of the law making process.

  • Viet Vet December 28, 2018, 1:58 pm

When I see the STUPID comments here, I realize the GOA is a false flag and is designed to destroy the NRA.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:04 am

If GOA is a false flag, then the NRA is the master counterfeiter. If the NRA acted as advertised, there would be no need for the NRA. Or have you missed what the NRA’s been saying about gun control since 1871?

  • Viet Vet December 28, 2018, 1:50 pm

    Molon Labe!

  • Earl Haehl December 28, 2018, 12:50 pm

This is Trump showing his true colors. While the gun community was a constituency necessary to Trump’s election he has never been enamored of middle class and poor people having guns. The turn em in order is what the experts in Constitutional law (second year law students)) refer to as a Fifth Amendment taking without due process. Finding that many bump stocks which allow ordinary klutses to shoot almost as fast as Jerry Miculek is unlikely to occur. One of my 64 5th great grandfathers lived in Lexington,, Massachusetts Bay Colony where the authorities came through on their way to Concord to confiscate “contraband” munitions. What had been a relatively nonviolent but annoying American Revolution changed in a couple volleys into the War for Indepedence.

  • Barry December 28, 2018, 12:30 pm

The truth is that “bump fire” stocks are an inferior facsimile of a proper “select fire” weapon, and Americans have every right to own, possess, carry, and use select fire automatic military style weapons for lawful purposes. The law has no right to presume that simply because some people use an object for “other than lawful” purposes that anyone among us will do the same thing. The law can only properly deal with the fact of an actual criminal act perpetrated by an individual or group.

  • Norm Fishler December 28, 2018, 12:04 pm

A quick perusal of the comments was most enlightening. It would appear to me that a small percentage of the American shooting public is beginning to wake up. This is a far cry from the droves and droves of angry NRA members who would have written in a decade or so ago, incensed and outraged that you would even publish anything against the beloved, lofty and untouchable NRA. I had hoped that when Colonel North took the helm, things might change, but, sad to say, little, if anything seems to be approached any differently. It is said that when a ship is sinking at sea that the rats have abandoned ship before the Captain even knows anything is wrong. I hope this article represents a new awakening in the American shooting community and a shift from the liberal attitude of throwing our money at a problem by donating to the NRA, and a reasoned, measured approach of seeing our donated dollars actually accomplish our stated goals by supporting the GOA.

    • Winston December 28, 2018, 2:11 pm

Establishment operative and law breaker North will oversee the end of the NRA just as Rex Tillerson destroyed the Boy Scouts of America.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:09 am

Ollie pitches a good line. Sadly, however, as a retired Marine, I must say he seems to have been co-opted by the deep state. Moreover, the NRA has always done just what the BATFE asks. So, what does that make the NRA?

  • Ronald Wright December 28, 2018, 11:43 am

The Proposed Rule that the ATF recently released, PROVES the bump stock ban is a joke. You must have TWO HANDS ON THE FIREARM OR IT WON’T WORK. Try shooting the “bump stock” with only your trigger hand; it will ONLY FIRE ONE ROUND with a single trigger “function/pull”. You have to have the other hand on the front of the stock to make the bump stock function. Everyone knows a full auto will fire with one hand until you either release the trigger or run out of ammo! Shame on Pres Trump for even suggesting this stupidity. Support ALL anti-gun groups! The NRA made the right decision, it just needed a lot more information about WHY they did what they did along with their second statement! We really need to go back and get the 1934 Law NULLIFIED for violating the Bill of Rights and the Constitution!

  • Markr December 28, 2018, 11:10 am

I am an NRA member also and I’m not happy with them not having our backs on this bumpstock deal ,and in the same breath everyone is saying join the GOA ? What did the GOA do to save the bumpstock ? and furthermore what have they done ? This is a serious question ,I just haven’t heard of them doing anything.

    • Robert December 28, 2018, 1:21 pm

You haven’t been reading a variety of sites then. The GOA has filed a lawsuit against the ban, the only 2A group to do so immediately after the ban was announced. And Senator Feinstein has complained that it will hold up the implementation of the ban in court for years to come. The NRA hasn’t been a very good 2A supporter for over a decade now, but the GOA has been at the top leading the charge to protect the 2A un-infringed and uncompromised, followed by SAF and then others. The NRA has fallen way behind and has even given in to some of the anti-gun demands out there. You need to read a variety of sites to see what they are all doing.

  • Don Gray December 28, 2018, 10:54 am

    > While there can be disagreement on legislative strategy, it’s important to remember that we will soon face a hostile, anti-gun Congress led by Nancy Pelosi. It’s critical that all gun owners unite and prevent the Bloomberg-bought Congress from dismantling our Second Amendment freedom.

Yes because the NRA in conjunction with a republican majority house AND senate did SO much to bolster our Second Amendment RIGHTS

  • Vaughn Winslett December 28, 2018, 10:43 am

This benefactor member says Lapierre must go.

  • David Boswell December 28, 2018, 10:26 am

I have just joined the GOA and made a donation after reading this article, I’ll send GOA information to all of my friends because like myself I don’t think they have ever heard of the GOA.

    • Eric December 28, 2018, 11:30 am

None, and I mean NONE, of the so-called gun rights groups
have files a dingle Second Amendment claim against the ATF action.
Not NRA, not GOA, not FPC, not ANY of them.

If I have enough funds (about 1500), I would file my own suit
as I would have standing because I raised the Second Amendment claim in my comments to the ATF
including that I personally use a bump stock for self protection in my home.

Presuming BUMP STOCKS are machineguns then clearly machineguns are in common use for lawful purposes (overwhelmingly so) including self defense in the home and; therefore, protected by the Second Amendment (See Mass. v. Caetano http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/15pdf/14-10078_aplc.pdf )

While machineguns may not have been in common use for lawful purposes at the time that the NFA(1934) or the GCA(1968) or even the FOPA(1986), was enacted, if they are in common use for lawful purposes “today”, then they are protected by the Second Amendment. If restriction was valid in the past does not mean it is still valid today. That is, a restriction that “imposes current burdens and must be justified by current needs.” Northwest Austin Municipal Util. Dist. No. One v. Holder, 557 U. S. 193 ,203 (2009)(“current burdens and must be justified by current needs.”)

This is even born out in the dissent by Justice Breyer in Heller (2008)(“According to the majority’s reasoning, if Congress and the States lift restrictions on the possession and use of machineguns, and people buy machineguns to protect their homes, the Court will have to reverse course and find that the Second Amendment does, in fact, protect the individual self-defense-related right to possess a machine-gun. On the majority’s reasoning, if tomorrow someone invents a particularly useful, highly dangerous self-defense weapon, Congress and the States had better ban it immediately, for once it becomes popular Congress will no longer possess the constitutional authority to do so. While Justice Breyer disagreed that is the meaning that SHOULD be used, it nonetheless confirms the meaning of Heller.

      • Winston December 28, 2018, 4:30 pm

GoA has sued the NYC mentality Trump Admin.

The GOA filed the lawsuit Wednesday in the Western District of Michigan. The district is within the jurisdiction of the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, which is considered by the pro-gun group to be more friendly to gun ownership and skeptical of government regulatory action.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued a rule change earlier this month that classified bump stocks — devices used to accelerate rate of fire of semi-automatic rifles — as machine guns, which are illegal.

“Our suit will challenge the legality of ATF’s action and ask for an injunction to stop enforcement of the regulations,” Erich Pratt, GOA executive director, said in a statement.

    • Daniel Beaudean December 28, 2018, 12:31 pm

I am NOT renewing my NRA membership, but I did send GOA $250. Unlike the NRA they did not ask the President to regulate bump stocks. The Trump Bump stock ban will be used to confiscate all semi-auto rifles by some future Democrat. Ironically, I voted for Mr. Trump and even more disturbing are the red flag laws which Trump is pushing states to pass.

Gary Willis in Maryland was murdered by police in his home for not giving up his guns. Any body can call the cops and complain you are a threat and the police will come get your guns or KILL you. Gary Willis was 60 years old and no police record.

Louisiana doesn’t have red-flag laws YET, but several states do.

  • t monk December 28, 2018, 10:21 am

This quotation of lenin’s is haunting. communists may think that no one detects their efforts or are too lazy to do anything about it. They could be partially right.

  • Gerald Leroy Clauson December 28, 2018, 9:49 am

The NRA has been without a backbone for decades. The original Clinton assault rifle ban, was put in place in part because the NRA caved in. There are better Alternatives than the NRA, I would urge anyone to check out Gun Owners of America. When things looked Bleak, I considered rejoining the NRA. Glad now that I did not. We had Congress, we had the White House, we had the upper hand. And they fled in the face of the enemy.

  • G.O.A. Patriot December 28, 2018, 9:42 am

Lapierre caved immediately after the Las Vegas shootings!!! It infuriated me and caused me to not rejoin the NRA but turn my full allegiance to the Gun Owners of America, the only NO COMPROMISE gun rights organization in the nation!!! When you start banning gun accessories OF ANY KIND your cracking the door open to the anti-gunners who will try even harder to kick the door down!!!!!

  • TrouserTrout December 28, 2018, 9:39 am

I sent GOA a donation in support of our lawsuit. I am a NRA member but feel they screwed us big time. And they did not even give us a reach around. 😡

  • Ralph Haas December 28, 2018, 9:17 am

The NRA caved for some reason! I’ve been an NRA member for more than 45 years, and I am very disappointed with the NRA and President Trump for supporting and signing a bump-stock ban even though I don’t even own one! One tragedy in which a bump stock was used doesn’t justify this type of response. Our gun rights should not be anything that President Trump negotiates away. Baseball bats, knives, and vehicles used to run over people cause many more deaths than bump stocks as we all know.

The next time we have a really anti-gun president, all he or she will have to do is to ask or order the ATF to rewrite the rules in order to outlaw another type of firearm accessory such as collapsable stocks or suppressors, particular types of guns or ammunition or reloading components, and we’ll lose more of our rights essentially by decree without even having gone through a legislative process!

The 2nd Amendent of our Constitution is not about hunting or target shooting, it is about protecting ourselves from criminals who wish to do us harm, but is also about protecting ourselves and our Country from a tyrannical, overreaching, and out-of-control government who feels the need to disarm the citizenry in order to impose its will. “Fear the government that fears your guns!” is a very appropriate statement for today’s situation. Also, Thomas Jefferson said, “….the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants….” Do we understand what he is saying? Remember, the Country is very different from the Government!

Maybe somebody can file a lawsuit and eventually have this bump-stock ban overturned by the Supreme Court? It’s worth a try!

  • J Rawlins December 28, 2018, 9:10 am

The NRA threw alot of it’s own members under the bus when this issue came out, it’s way too late to half heartedly try to come out in defense of American’s rights. Not only did the NRA not stand up for Americans and their constitutional rights, they opposed us. I’ve still got another 5 years on my membership but after that I can’t support them, after all it seems like the NRA only cares about their membership numbers and their members $$.

  • Elmer Nichols December 28, 2018, 8:42 am

The NRA’s first statement was that they would support a Bump stock ban !!!! Don’t try to retract or clarify your meaning now , TOO LATE !! The one organization I thought would fight for our gun rights was one of the first to cave !! Cowards!!!! We must stand firm on our second amendment !!!!!! This ban is just another ” chip ” away on our gun rights. Soon our second amendment will be just a pile of stones slowly chipped away by the Government with support of the NRA !!! Oh well at least we will still have a pile of stones to throw at the enemy like in the Middle East !!!!!!!

    • The Elapid King December 28, 2018, 9:42 am

Why would you believe that the NRA would ever fight for our rights when almost all of the most egregious Federal firearms laws were passed with their full blessing?
The NRA fully supported the NFA, the GCA, the Hughes Amendment in FOPA and even the provision in the 1994 Crime bill and Omnibus act prohibiting the sale of “assault weapons.”
In fact, the NRA was one of the first NGOs to openly state that civilians have no business owning automatic weapons, and for the longest time, the NRA even stated that civilians had no need for ”
assault weapons” or ammunition capacities greater than 5 rounds.
The problem is that people’s collective memories are short and as a result organizations can wrong them and walk away with it if they can conceal their duplicitous machinations long enough.

    • G.O.A. Patriot December 28, 2018, 9:46 am

Elmer you should redirect your allegiance to the Gun Owners of America organization!!! They are the only NO COMPROMISE gun rights organization in the country!!!

      • Eric December 28, 2018, 11:34 am

        I disagree.
None, and I mean NONE, of the so-called gun rights groups
have filed a single Second Amendment claim against the ATF action.
Not NRA, not GOA, not FPC, not ANY of them.

        • Jaime December 28, 2018, 4:12 pm

The FPC has already filed a claim challenging the ATF/DOJ “bump-stock ban”. https://www.firearmspolicy.org/fpc-v-whitaker. Counsel for FPC is Tom Goldstein one of the nation’s most experienced Supreme Court practitioners.

The GOA has guaranteed they will file their own claim against the ATF after the law goes into effect. The GOA might be avoiding a ripeness issue.

The NRA has stated that the bump-stock ban is “unfortunate”.

  • C Rick December 28, 2018, 8:38 am

No gun or gun parts should ever be denied a law abiding American citizen. The only weapon that should be out of your reach is the one you can’t afford. If our government has access to it, so should we.

    • G.O.A. Patriot December 28, 2018, 9:47 am

That was the founding fathers intent when they ratified the 2nd Amendment brother!!!

      • J. Buck December 28, 2018, 3:11 pm

Amen! The second amendment covers all weapons, even the ones our founding fathers couldn’t have conceived. When the day comes that a lazer blaster is the main battle rifle of the military, civilians should legally posses the same technology. That was the true intent.

  • Smitty December 28, 2018, 8:31 am

Right, lets hurry up and give up another 2nd Amendment right so we can unite, get more money for ourselves and give up another 2nd Amendment right at a later date. The intent is not to save the 2nd Amendment because if they do there is no more need for you and I to send the NRA money. Even when the 2nd is gone they will still be asking for money to bring it back. These guys have learned a great deal from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. We shall never overcome as long as there is a buck to be won. This might seem a harsh statement and I hope it’s not true. However, I am deathly afraid it’s far closer to the truth than my peasant mind could imagine.

  • Ross S. Riley December 28, 2018, 8:22 am

Can the Gov. confiscate lawfully owned property from private citizens without compensation? Even Australia learned they had to compensate. I’m opposed to the ban but I’m double opposed to Gov. theft.

  • H.Reinfelder December 28, 2018, 8:21 am

Read, “Why grandpa carries a gun.” That’s the rest of the story

  • J. Smith December 28, 2018, 8:17 am

See H.R. 7115, the “3D Firearms Prohibitions Act” reintroduced in Congress in November.

Totally unconstitutional on many aspects of it.

  • J. Smith December 28, 2018, 8:12 am

My issue is the abuse and reinventing of language and meaning and this travesty of law and due process. I asked the ATF and got no answer: Does This mean that their new interpretation of the law can also be extend to drop-in triggers? Not only binary, but triggers with quick reset, light pull that allow shooters to fire near-full auto speeds like the Tacon 3MR.

Although, we can assume it doesn’t cover these triggers, for now, because the ATF didn’t say it did, that means nothing.

It was just shown that the law can be manipulated to do just that. So, what will prevent them from doing it in the near future to ban all kinds of devices, parts, triggers, etc?

I Have been donating solely to GOA since Sandy Hook.

Who generally doesn’t give a crap about following the law? Criminals!

So, what happens when you make felons and criminals out of millions of law abiding citizens, former-cops, military, etc…? They all stop giving a crap about the law, because free men will always live free.

    • Eric December 28, 2018, 11:40 am

You can be sure those type of triggers are in the target now because after all,
they can use the exact same bump stick logic to eliminate those triggers.
i.e., it harnesses the recoil energy of your finger and directs the energy to cause a function of the trigger.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:18 am

You can bet anything that “increases the rate of fire” can be included. I think of a number of accessories that act to “increase the rate of fire.” Such as CQB sights, properly functioning magazines, recoil buffers, compensators, etc etc etc. So, if this one sticks, it won’t be the last.

  • Godfrey Washington December 28, 2018, 7:23 am

The day we start confiscating and restricting cars of people who have never driven drunk in an effort to stop drunk drivers, I will coinsider complying with this “law”.

Until then I will just have to continue being a responsibly armed citizen.

  • Godfrey Washington December 28, 2018, 7:20 am

Whatever happen to compromise? Here is another example of how they’re “not coming for our guns” but I find myself facing more laws and restrictions when I’ve done nothing wrong. If im surrendering/ destroying my stock, why can’t we have suppressors removed from the nfa list? How about removing restrictions on barrels lengths?

Bottom line is this is Gov’t over reach. And I (like many I predict) dont have any plans of complying with this laws that punishes me for a crime I didn’t commit.

Sorry gun grabbers, I feel for you but not enough to sacrifice my rights.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:22 am

No we have to confront the cold hard fact that Mr. Trump, is a knee-jerk gun grabber. Not only bumpstocks, but also Red Flag laws. Both of these progressive concepts have their origins from within the NRA itself. So, what does that say about the NRA? It’s leadership is a bunch of crafty gun-grabbers.

  • T.Mccoy December 28, 2018, 6:00 am

Problem with the NRA is that has become like a like our Government, too large and bloated with bureaucratic BS. They have become great at fundraising and compromise (anything to keep us rubes happy while enriching themselves). Like a lot of organizations, it takes on a life of its own and it becomes less and less about the cause and more about what’s good for the organization.
The problem I guess if, with me, I am too old and remember when the Hughes amendment was passed. We were all told, “don’t worry, it’s unconstitutional and we will fight it in the courts”. Back then I believed and donated heavily(still waiting on that fight). Then somewhere along the way I just gave up and donated, renewed my membership and feel in line with the other sheep who repeat the mantra “the NRA is all we have”.
The bump-stock woke my ass up again and I’m ready for a fight and the NRA is off fundraising. Which I why I no longer support the NRA and am supporting the GOA. Right after this was announced I saw where the GOA filed a lawsuit. My first tough was, it’s not about the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog and that’s why my full support now goes the GOA. I have grown fed up with slowly giving up my rights which is all the NRA seems to be able to do.

    • MacDaddy December 28, 2018, 7:56 am

Agreed. We can’t continue to compromise our Rights and need to throw our financial and vocal support behind organizations like the GOA, which understand the importance of and will truly fight for our Second Amendment Rights – this will be critical over the next few years.

  • Jay December 28, 2018, 5:51 am

Am I the only one that see’s this whole thing since the Las Vegas shooting as a staged event? Am I the only one that see’s what they’re after? The bump stock is nothing more than a accessory, one of many thousands out there. If you will look up and read the original black scary gun ban of the Clinton era, you’ll see that many accessories made a whole gun a banned gun! If they can stop accessories that can change anything about our guns than we will eventually be left with single shot bolt action or worse bows and arrows! If it get’s passed the courts, than others will follow, mark my words!

    • Steven December 28, 2018, 7:17 am

      True.

    • AJ December 28, 2018, 8:56 am

Exactly… And once they succeed in banning one an accessory, the other ones follow… Eventually they will move on to guns with pistol grips because they will be classified as an accessory. The ATF will be able to classify at will. As soon as they are able to classify one accessory as a firearm it will be easy to justify reclassifying others. Bureaucratic legislation should be deemed unconstitutional. But the government will always use it to bypass the law. That’s the reason it is there. No accountability.

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:25 am

Staged or not, what happened or didn’t happen in Vegas is no justification for for banning gun parts. If you can’t tell, the BATFE with the NRA’s assistance are after anything you can put on a rifle that “increases the rate of fire.” So, you can bet there’ll be similar tactics used against a myriad of attachments that can “increase the rate of fire.” I bet you didn’t know CQB sights “increase the rate of fire,” did you?

  • Mr Evilwrench December 28, 2018, 5:51 am

To call a bump stock a machine gun is an absurdity. A machine gun fires multiple rounds with a single trigger pull, and the bump stock doesn’t work that way. It merely allows the recoil of the rifle to break the trigger’s contact with your finger, then bring it back for another pull. It takes practice just to get a burst, and since you can’t brace the rifle for accuracy, it’s spray and pray. I never wanted to own one, but I object that it now becomes illegal.

  • Mtchell Maxberry December 28, 2018, 4:45 am

Another false attempt that misleads the general public . The Las Vegas situation was never fully resolved as to who and why , dead men tell no tales while someone else controls the narrative and many questions not answered, why did we accept the lies as fact with out proof. The US is in a quandary the bump stock issue falls into line with suppressors a media blitz in 1934 and they were banned while several other European countries plus New Zealand allow their use with minimal or zero requirement for purchase. We still await a challenge to May 19 1986 ban on newly manufactured machine guns that using the not challenged SCOTUS opinion that the banning of machineguns was an illegal act prohibiting the understanding of the 2ed Amendment that the civilian populous had the right to own the equivalent firearms used by the military. I NZ and what would be better in the US is a open means to legally register any unregistered machinegun . As it stands the issue is the $200 tax not paid on unregistered machineguns and the governments refusal to allow that tax to be paid , where is the justification for that ? Or is it even legal to grandfather and limit the numbers of machineguns in circulation ? What are bump stocks not being allowed to ether pay the $200 tax if they are to be called machineguns or another 1968 style amnesty ?

    • Cody March 29, 2019, 8:27 am

There is no quandary, except how the shooting public responds to the NRA’s media blitz, believing the NRA actually supports the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, since the NRA doesn’t.

  • Bobs your uncle December 27, 2018, 2:37 pm

I joined the NRA in 1958 and took the safe hunter course, over the years I learned to reload cartridges from an NRA book titled “why not reload your own” by Townsend Whalen, when I was in the military I had a big head start in firearms training, over time I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment from NRA magazines books and videos. I’m always amazed and disappointed by those people that appose the efforts of the NRA and at the same time want and enjoy those rights fought so hard for by the very organization they appose. Most if not all police and military firearms training has its base in NRA developed programs.

I personally don’t own a firearm that could be fitted with a stock of this type. When I saw the hotel crime scene photos on the internet I was struck by just how staged and political it all looked, here and there you have small piles of ar rifles with bumpstocks and high capacity magazines, most people don’t own twenty of the exact same gun or a hundred high cap magazines. If the goal had been to murder a large number of people he had far more effective methods at his disposal, no he wanted to harm the NRA, Trump and Las Vegas for what ever pathetic reasons.

What we end up with is law and regulation by crazy person. I don’t agree with the NRA on this one but I will stand with them.

    • Dustin Eward December 28, 2018, 2:51 am

With backstabbing cowards and liars for friends, who needs enemies… I’ve never been an NRA member, because it’s not hard to find out they’ve authored most of the anti-gunnlaws in this country. The NRA has been our enemy since 1934. Join the GOA instead. You’ll get no “unity” from the backstabing cowards and liars at the NRA.

      • Alan Robinson December 28, 2018, 9:59 am

I really hate when someone such as you makes statements that are so false.
The NRA has NOT “authored” most of the anti gun laws.
Check your facts before you make such egregious and fallacious bullshit.

        • The Elapid King December 29, 2018, 9:20 pm

The NRA may not have authored any federal legislation, frankly I sincerely doubt that any in the NRA are intelligent enough to do so, they did, however, completely endorse those laws.
The NRA supported the NFA, they supported the GCA, they supported the Hughes amendment in FOPA and they even supported the “Assault Weapons” ban in 1994.

    • Brandon z December 28, 2018, 4:35 am

+1 for that comment. I am in 100% agreement. Thank you for that post.

  • Clay L Hamann December 26, 2018, 9:27 pm

As has always been true, the problem is not with instrumentality, it is the evil that exists in the hearts of some people. Legislating against any THING will never accomplish the desired goal. Legislating against evil actions, followed by prompt, harsh punishment for evil deeds is the only action that will bring about change, and even this will not completely eliminate evil. Evil exists and must be dealt with.

  • Tessa Pegram December 26, 2018, 7:15 pm

Yeah, I’m sure that’s exactly what they meant. They immediately threw their wallets and said “take whatever you want. Just don’t hurt me.”

  • Mike V December 26, 2018, 2:17 pm

We held the line after Sandy Hook with the wrong president.

With the House, Senate, and Presidency supposedly pro gun we are saying we couldn’t this time?

I know that bills become Christmas trees, but this could have been lumped with the fix nics bill and kept fairly tidy.

We needlessly provoked the ATF, and depending on the fate of this in the courts, potentially set a terrible precedent for how to do things.

The NRA still handles this in limp wristed fashion. I love how they sacrifice upwards of a half million gun owners rights, then follow that with a guilt inducing call for unity…

This whole episode is akin to an army blowing up the bridge before it retreated over it…

The situation wasn’t that desperate, we should’ve done better.

    • S.H. Blannelberry December 26, 2018, 2:43 pm

      Agreed ^^^

    • Txjack December 28, 2018, 3:24 am

      Well said Mike V.

    • Tyrone L. Greene December 28, 2018, 9:43 am

      YES!….

    • Eric December 28, 2018, 11:46 am

“We held the line after Sandy Hook with the wrong president.”

There will never be a ‘right president” until the one party system is eliminated.

Yes, those who pick the candidates to chose from on both dem and rep tickets are
controlled by the same people. (i.e., same people that invite presidential candidates to Bilderberg group meetings)

Is A or B really a choice if someone else narrowed the selections to A and B?

      Think about that one.
