Seekins Precision: NX3G Rifle

In a world where AR-15 clones are built by seemingly everyone but Toyota ( yet), it can be hard to get excited about a new model. But there is something to be said for the companies that specialize in AR’s as the core business. In a hyper-competitive market, they have to come correct to keep the lights on. So what can a small company give you that the big boys can’t? Turns out, a lot.

Seekins Precision is a name you might not know unless you shoot competitively, but that is changing. With roots in the 3 gun world, they have successfully branched out into every corner of the AR world, from tactical SBR’s to hunting guns.  They also make some kick ass bolt action rifle’s that we’ll hopefully be testing in the future. They’re especially famous for precision scope rings and for holding tolerances that other manufacture’s only dream of. The model we got our grubby mitts on this week is a competition special, though usable for many tasks.

The new NX3G is an out of the box 3 gun contender, just add optics. The upper receiver features a 16-inch barrel with a full-length handguard, as in all the way to the back of the muzzle brake. The barrel profile is a mid contour, as opposed to the pencil barrels we often see on race guns. Added weight does give some advantages, like it heats up slower, and is less prone to stringing rounds when hot. Accuracy is on board with P for plenty. My best group with 77 grain Black Hills ammo was 5/8ths of an inch. Considering I was testing on a windy day, with some target movement, the rifle is likely capable of a bit more.

Everything else on the rifle is about weight reduction. There are cutouts in the magwell, one of which is an uber cool Seekins logo. The underside of the brass deflector is cut out, and the receivers are heavily cut away. Hell, even the Picatinny rails are skeletonized. Every ounce counts. The end result is not only functional, but it makes for a very sexy looking gun. The trigger guard is integral to the lower and oversized enough for any gloves.

The controls are well designed and thought out. The safety is ambi, and a 60 degree throw. The magazine release is extended and it has a raised diamond texture, as do the other controls. Above the magazine release is a right side bolt release, small enough not to be in the way, but big enough to use. My favorite Seekins part is the left side bolt release. It is massive, not something you are going to miss on a quick reload. The charging handle is also built in-house, with plenty of real estate to work with your favorite scope.

My test model came with a Magpul ACS-L. I speculate the buffer tube is also built by Seekins, due to the fit. I have never seen a more perfect fit with a collapsible stock, there is zero wiggle.

Performance wise, this gun flat out runs. Seekins own ATC muzzle brake keeps it flat, and the balance of the rifle makes it easy to swing. As competition rifles go, this is absolutely a contender.
