NY Times Op-Ed: ‘It’s time to talk about taking away guns’

in Authors, Current Events, S.H. Blannelberry

It’s time to talk about confiscation, at least according to Andrew Rosenthal of the NY Times.

In an op-ed Wednesday, Rosenthal wrote, “It’s time to talk about taking away guns — not everyone’s guns and not all of them, but a whole lot. I know I am inviting enormous vitriol with that sentence, but it has to be said.”

I appreciate Rosenthal’s honesty on the matter.  I really do. Because too often gun control advocates stop short of telling us how they really feel about confiscation. Why do they stop short?  Two reasons.

First, it’s a political nonstarter. Were the government to actively start going door to door to seize weapons from the American people we’d have a civil war on our hands.  No one wants a civil war, especially the side with no guns.

Second, it undermines the anti-gun lobby’s current long-term strategy which is to kill the 2A with a thousand cuts.  To enact bills like universal background checks and No-Fly, No-Buy they need support from moderate gun owners.  A surefire way to burn the trust of moderates would be openly calling for confiscation and civil disarmament, even though, as Rosenthal admits, that’s the end goal.

“There is no good reason for a civilian to own rifles like the ones used by the Las Vegas killer and even less to own many of them,” wrote Rosenthal.

“We need to steadily remove from private hands those kinds of guns, and ammunition designed to kill and maim more effectively or to pierce armor. Then we need to find more ways to reduce the number of weapons we own,” he continued.

I love his use of the pronoun “we.” I doubt Mr. Rosenthal owns any firearms.  But if he does, by all means, sir, you’re free to hand them over.

We’re not going to though.  Because we need them.  We need them to defend ourselves, our families, our property and our freedom from those that would take them all away.  If that’s not clear enough, try this, I need my guns to keep people like you from trying to confiscate them.

The purpose of the Second Amendment is to prevent tyranny over American citizens. Whether that tyranny is foreign or domestic, it doesn’t matter. The Founders knew a person’s own government can become a Tyrant, thus, they provided for the individual right to self-defense, hence the ‘right to bear arms’. The argument that the right is for the ‘military’ only (some confuse this with ‘militia’ term) is laughable, as the Founders also understood the military was often used to impose tyranny.
The 2A is not about hunting, target practice, or even stopping common criminals (that’s a happy by-product), etc. – it’s about everyday people being able to defend their own freedoms, regardless of who the aggressor is – foreign or domestic.

  • Capt D October 18, 2017, 5:43 pm

First things first….. Clips are what people put in their hair. How do cops actually empty their clips, with two fingers?
Magazine’s hold ammo and what cops, the military and gun owners put in their guns!
Most Lefties and those supporting gun confiscation do not own weapons much less know how they work or how to use them. We that do know, do not forgive their ignorance as being bliss may get you killed. Who in right mind would chose not to arm and defend one’s self in any corner of this world?
In a life or death situation against an attacker with any kind of weapon?? Anti-gun supporters will wish they had a gun or at the very least someone who does stepping up to protect their sorry butts!
Personally, if the threat is not against me or my family and friends I’m not stepping up. So people who support gun confiscation better figure it out for themselves! The bad guys will ‘always’ have guns or weapons of convenience and you better hope that you have a lucky rabbits foot up your ass for the rest of your life! Wake up and smell the coffee! Pay attention to what is going on around us and in our world today. Gun confiscation is not the answer!
As for my guns? You’re welcome to have them….
    Bullets first!

    • Mike H. October 19, 2017, 12:04 pm

Forgive me! I forgot that cops wear clips in their hair. I’m old school. I know what a magazine is. It’s what You little girls read when You’re in the John. I call magazines clips. Of course, I still use iron sights too! You know what those are don’t You? I use a fine bead on my rifle. Do You know what that means? Probably not. I’m sure You’ve got laser sights on all Your guns. and believe it or not,I still shoot the old fashioned single action revolvers! Excuse me for my calling a magazine a clip. Please!

    • Mike H. October 20, 2017, 12:24 am

I thought that cops empty their guns by pulling the trigger until they don’t shoot anymore!

  • William Barr October 17, 2017, 8:06 pm

HELLO . FROM WHAT I SEE THEIR TRYING TO START A CIVIL WAR THAT WAY THEY CAN DECLARE MARSHALL LAW . WHAT THEY JUST WANT TO SLAUGHTER US ALL . LOOK AT ALL THE UNARMED BLACKS THEIR JUST MURDERING IN MY OPINION . NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO THE COPS IT’S FLAT OUT MURDER WHEN YOU SHOOT SOMEONE UNARMED IN THE BACK 3 OR 4 AGAINST 1 GUY JUST WITH A POCKET KNIFE .I’M NOT SMART BUT LET THE GUY RUN OFF HOME OR WHEREVER & THEN ARRESST HIM . DUH 3 OR 4 GUYS COULDN’T TAZE HIM WHERE’S THEIR TRAINING .. WHAT’S THEIR 1ST EXCUSE . I WAS IN FEAR OF MY LIFE . THAT’S A PISS POOR EXCUSE TO MURDER A FELLOW HUMAN BEING . I’M WHITE & COLOR BLIND THANK GOD . SHOULDN’T MATTER WHAT COLOR OR RACE THEY ARE . MURDER IS MURDER . THANK YOU GOD BLESS HAVE A BLESSED AY & LOVE ONE ANOTHER

    • Mike H. October 15, 2017, 6:39 pm

I totally agree with You. Don’t judge a man by his color! We’re all the same. Some of the finest people I’ve ever known were not my skin color! And when these cops shoot an unarmed man,why do they empty their clips? Is it because they don’t know how to shoot?

    • Darrin October 16, 2017, 12:58 am

Jesus christ here we go with another snowflake whiny ass. Blame the cops. Yup, blame all the cops for the fact that all those blacks that were “murdered” were actively trying to kill the police officer.

      • Mike H. October 16, 2017, 6:42 pm

I ain’t blaming the cops! But tell me why in the hell they have to empty their clips every time they shoot a suspect? Do they need to spend more time at the range? Hell’s Bells!

        • Joe C October 18, 2017, 9:35 am

Cops are trained to stop the threat. The same as anyone who ever takes conceal and carry class and any continuing education or advanced classes. You shoot until the threat is stopped. You aim for center mass and you fire until the threat stops moving…. “Why don’t they just shoot him in the knee?” is a question I see a lot. I don’t care how good of a shot you are, or how much training or experience you have. When you’re under that kind of pressure and in fear for your own safety, you’re not capable of hitting a moving target the size of a baseball. Even if you did, there’s no guarantee the threat would stop. Hell, there’s no guarantee the threat would stop with a full magazine pumped into his torso. If YOU want to maim someone breaking into your home or accosting you on the street, go right ahead. I’m shooting until he stops moving.

          • Mike H. October 18, 2017, 3:11 pm

Maybe You need to learn how to shoot!

      • Mike H. October 16, 2017, 6:44 pm

Hey,whiney ass! You sure bout that?

  • Auggie Will October 14, 2017, 1:51 am

The war or drugs has been going on for over 50 + years, and maybe I wrong but it looks to me there are more drugs on the streets now than ever before?
So now they are back to talking about outlawing guns and just like there war on drugs it’s not going to work!

    • Altoid October 14, 2017, 12:21 pm

      How right you are!
If a profit can be made by the cartels by entering the firearm manufacturing business, they’ll do it. Drugs seized on the border represent something like 10%, meaning 90% of drug shipments from Mexico make it through. How will illegal firearms be stopped? Answer is they won’t. And those weapons will most likely be true full auto and won’t end up in the hands of Saturday afternoon plinkers and recreational shooters.

  • Don October 13, 2017, 8:39 pm

This guy needs to start confiscating all the guns in criminal hands. When he gets up to 80 – 90% of those guns out of circulation, tell him to call me.

  • warren October 13, 2017, 7:59 pm

  • JTaylor October 13, 2017, 5:52 pm

Everyone gets “SUCKED” onto the argument about “NEED”. I don’t need a gun, titaium putter or an half-calf latte w/gluten-free sprinkles. However, I am a free person living in a free country and I am free to responsibly own these “THINGS”.

STOP getting SUCKED into arguing about what you NEED, that’s for SLAVES.
    Dumbass!

  • Clark McEntire October 13, 2017, 4:18 pm

In watching the NEWS when there is a DRUNK DRIVER THEY blame the driver not the car. IN an HOME INVASION they blame the person not the tools BUT crimes involving FIREARMS they are GUN CRIMES and blame it on the FIREARM NOT THE USER . Punishes the user not the FIREARM

    • Aardvark October 15, 2017, 3:59 pm

You’re right. We need to change the narrative to show the gun grabbers how ridiculous they are. From now on we should ALWAYS refer to:
      1. drunk or distracted drivers as “car crimes”
      2. assault with a baseball bat as “bat violence”
      3. vehicular assault as “car violence”
      4. assault with a bladed instrument as “blade violence” (or “knife, hatchet, or machete violence”)
      5. assault by hands and feet as “limb violence” (or “hand or foot violence”)
You get the idea. Use their stupid neuro-linguistic programming phrases against them. If they are going to blame the tool rather than the criminal, show everyone how brain washed they are in buying into it.

  • Boz October 13, 2017, 3:28 pm

  • Grant Stevens October 13, 2017, 3:07 pm

It’s time to start talking about taking away the New York Times’ First Amendment. They have abused it beyond redemption.

  • Tc October 13, 2017, 1:43 pm

It seems easy to blame the misused tool. Much tougher would blaming the behavior, talk about rolling a rock uphill. Maybe its really time to trim back the wide open avenues of expression that allow evil thoughts to escape the realm of imagination and become manifest as evil acts. Maybe its time to put a lid back on Pandora’s box.

  • AK October 13, 2017, 1:00 pm

  • TIMOTHY O'CONNOR October 13, 2017, 11:50 am

Gun control worked so well, for Nazi Germany. Only eight million souls lost. Someone call Australia, to see how it’s working for them.

  • Michael Keim October 13, 2017, 11:41 am

A friend sent me this. It pretty much says it all: Do you trust those in government, now and forever in the future, to not take your life, liberty, or property theough the force of government? If the answer to that question is “no,” the gun control debate is over.

  • MICHAEL P HENRY October 13, 2017, 11:39 am

To quote Charleton Heston…. “Over my deadcold body”, so,Rosenthall, go fuck yourself (no offense).

  • Michael Keim October 13, 2017, 11:25 am

Good luck with that plan Andy. Lmao

  • Philip Van Cleave October 13, 2017, 11:25 am

The gun-grabbers like to say, “No one wants to take your guns away!” We have known that is a lie and Rosenthal is another brick in the wall we can point to and say, “Oh, YES they do.”

  • MagnumOpUS October 13, 2017, 11:18 am

Yes, to them, it IS time to confiscate. Getting ready for the drive to TAKE CONTROL. And surely don’t want any reistance

    • Tuc October 13, 2017, 12:56 pm

Just so you know – I’m a Zionist Jew who’s proud of my heritage, love the toughness of the Israelis, live in NYS, don’t believe in god, have legally owned pistols and rifles, am a proud member of the NRA. I don’t much care for the left wing democrat Jew and find them disgraceful but many non-Jew left wing democrats are just as disgraceful. Love my country, the Constitution (esp. the 2nd amendment), and my guns. Thanks for reading – Tuc.

    “Let’s confiscate the guns.”
Haha. They’ve done a tremendous job of finding the illegal aliens, haven’t they. They’ve had no problems at all stopping the use and sale and import of drugs, right?

The more I think about possible gun confiscation, the less I worry.

  • DJ October 13, 2017, 10:27 am

    *  In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.  This doesn’t include the 30 million ‘Uncle Joe’ starved to death in the Ukraine.

    *  In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

    *  Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, leaving a populace unable to defend itself against the Gestapo and SS.  Hundreds of thousands died as a result.

    * China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

    *  Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

    * Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. The total dead are said to be 2-3 million

    * Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, 1-2 million ‘educated’ people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

    *  Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million at a bare minimum.

    * Gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results:
Australia-wide, homicides went up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults went up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies went up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns.
It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too.
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady DECREASE in armed robbery with firearms, that changed drastically upward in the first year after gun confiscation…since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety  has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Oh, and let’s not forget about Cubans and Venezuelans who were disarmed long ago.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

    With Guns………..We Are “Citizens”.
    Without Them……..We Are “Subjects”.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED. Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended Harvard University 1919-1921 & was Naval Attaché to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor and our Army had been deprived of funding and was ill prepared to defend the country. It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U. S. and knew that almost all households had guns.

  • skipNclair October 13, 2017, 10:19 am

When you find a way to take all lthe guns away from the bad guys, then come back and talk about taking them away from the good guys, Until then shut the fuck up and do what you think is best for you and yours, and we will do what we think is best for our loved ones and selves. Oh by the way that should include taking them away from any govt. agencies, as one that would spend time learning what has caused more deaths to the populace by guns, it would be those nations and governments that took away the peoples guns first. Pol Pot, Stalin, Mau, the list is quite long, and the number of deaths beyond count.

    • voice in your head October 13, 2017, 11:54 am

Thugs would love it if all guns were confiscated. Then they only need a knife, a baseball bat or just their fists to pray on the weak. A gun is an equaliser; it gives the weak an effective means of defense.

  • Erp October 13, 2017, 10:17 am

Unless of course, you want to come try to disarm us yourselves…..

    • JoeUSooner October 13, 2017, 11:39 am

Small correction… “We have the absolute right – directly from God – to possess and carry firearms. The 2nd Amendment completely prohibits the government from even attempting to interfere IN ANY WAY with that absolute right.

And, yes, that is indeed ALL the explanation/justification Liberals are entitled to. Past that, they are cheerfully invited to go engage in an act of autoeroticism!

  • Dan October 13, 2017, 9:46 am

“You can have my guns when you pry them from my cold dead fingers”, was that how Charleton Heston worded it?
If I’m close then my sentiment is the same. I will, add that I don’t fire a warning shot.
Man says that you don’t need all those guns, well I have a lot and as far as I am concerned, not enough.
Ask you wife if she has enough pairs of shoes, heels, flats etc. Draw draw from that analogy.

    • JoeUSooner October 13, 2017, 12:05 pm

By that Liberal idiot’s (pitiful) line of reasoning, I don’t NEED a nice SUV, when a cheap old Chevy will suffice to get me around… I do not NEED a 2,000 square foot home, when a small apartment will suffice for me and my wife… I do not NEED new clothes, when used ones from GoodWill would suffice.

That cuckoo-clock obviously (mistakenly) thinks it’s the Bill of Needs, rather than the Bill of Rights. He desperately requires psychological/mental health treatment. And he should not be allowed out in public without a Keeper.

  • pete October 13, 2017, 9:35 am

Yep, a person with a problem is usually the last person to be able to see their problem. It’s time to make changes. It’s no longer cool to worship at the massive fire power alter. At long last we need to grow up.

    • JoeUSooner October 13, 2017, 12:23 pm

I thought worship occurred at an altar…

“it’s time to make changes…”?? Wrong-o, moosebreath! No changes are wanted, needed, desired, justified, or warranted… at least, not by sane, intelligent adults.

Maybe it’s no longer cool for YOU to worship at the “alter” (sic), but we responsible, law-abiding sentient beings are quite happy with the status quo (actually, it’s really cool!).

What is this WE who “need to grow up”? You and the mouse in your pocket? Opine elsewhere, little boy.

  • Jerry Herndon October 13, 2017, 9:31 am

The first time a civilian is killed on his own property by the Feds who are there to confiscate his firearms, it will be such an outrage across the nation that a civil war will break out. That’s not a maybe. I guarantee it to happen.

    • Chuck October 13, 2017, 10:06 am

I remember a recent government confiscation of firearms in New Orleans, no one lifted a finger to stop it and even the National Guard doing the confiscation admitted it was wrong, but they were only following orders. Try shooting back, you will be killed and the liberal media will label you as a terrorist that was killed while resisting arrest. The rest of our fellow gun owners will cheer your murder as defending against terrorism. The government will take our guns and no one will lift a finger to prevent it for it will be done in the name of FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, just like we have surrendered our rights to privacy to the NSA… FOR OUR OWN SAFETY. Wake up and smell the roses, it is coming and we will do nothing about it.

  • shrugger October 13, 2017, 9:20 am

When you come for mine, be sure to bring yours.

  • Chuck October 13, 2017, 9:19 am

I’ll give him the Only reason why it’s necessary for humans to own such firearms. In the 20th century Governments murdered over 260 Million Unarmed people. That’s historical true. Marxist morons either can’t form a free thought on their own or they still believe in the tooth fairy.

  • William M Durham October 13, 2017, 9:15 am

Over my dead body will anyone take my weapons. The 2nd amendment gave us the right to protect us from this very government over reach. First step in any dictatorship is weapon confiscation from the people

    • Edodaniel October 13, 2017, 10:35 am

The 2nd Amendment did not “give” citizens the right to keep and bear arms, it GUARANTEES the pre-existing god given right to defend self, family, neighbors, and property with whatever weapon is required to do so.
The original 10 amendments were required by the Ratification Conventions of almost all 13 of the original States as a condition of ratification to ensure the Federal Government was limited in its reach to ONLY those powers enumerated within the Constitution.

    • oldfuzz695 October 13, 2017, 6:23 pm

An armed citizenry is protection against an oppressive, tyrannical, corrupt government. Now some lefties say the U.S. will send their military to squash any such revolt. Maybe in tidy wars with uniforms, equipment markings and a defined battle line, but it is impossible to win a war against an armed force without I.D. (Vietnam?) (Middle East?) Breeding faster than we can kill them.

  • Abner T October 13, 2017, 8:42 am

As a firearms owner, Mr. Rosenthal’s comments and suggestions deeply offends and makes me feel threatened. I think it’s high time that we removed all laptops, pens, pencils, and paper from opine artists from major metropolitan areas. They’re just too dangerous in the wrong hands, and he’s a prime example.

    • Michael Hanson October 13, 2017, 9:42 am

As a true leftist, Mr. Rosenthal doesn’t give two hoots if he offends you. You are his enemy. However, if you say anything to him that he doesn’t like, he will be offended, demand that you apologize, and probably have you declared a “hate group.” Let them try to come and get them. There will be a lot of “offended” leftists lying around.

  • Roger October 13, 2017, 8:33 am

All the people who are for gun confiscation are either on the benefitting end of massive government, or they believe government should play a central controlling role in everyone’s lives. Imagine that. The authors of the 2nd amendment had it right.

  • JGinNJ October 13, 2017, 8:25 am

Sounds like a good idea, but it is only a first step. We should remove automobiles and light trucks from private ownership, especially deadly vehicles with more than 175 HP. Nobody should be allowed access to private small airplanes. Ban drones before crazies start using them to attack people. While we are at it we could insert some clauses regarding the prohibition of certain types of music – hopefully no one would notice and we could rid the country of even more afflictions.

  • K.A. Hughes October 13, 2017, 7:49 am

    Ahhh…yes,
Another lecture from our betters. After all, they don’t, haven’t and will never deign to own a troglodytic apparatus as loathsome as a “gun” (imagine the sneering, thumb and forefinger holding his prissy nose).

As others have said, Good Luck with that.

  • Infidel762x51 October 13, 2017, 7:42 am

No one wants to take away your guns, i’m from the government and I’m here to help you, If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, this plan (obungholecare) will save you $2700 per year. I stooped believing the lefties many years ago.

  • BigC October 13, 2017, 7:36 am

It’s time to start talking about shuttering that bastion of left-wing, liberal idiocy, called the NY Times and throw-in the Washington Post too!!!

  • Jay October 13, 2017, 7:27 am

SEE? The Second Amendment works! The government knows they are loosing control over the people, as many are just now waking up from their media induced coma, are wanting to take you guns and are now admitting it openly!

  • Scott October 13, 2017, 7:18 am

The NRA DID Not side with the government on a ban . They said let the ATF revisit the Bump for further evaluation. The NRA never backs any confiscation of any kind. Lets get the facts straight.

    • AK Johnny 1 October 13, 2017, 9:34 am

Well guess what…. That was the WRONG response! THAT’S what has people so pissed off at them right now….Like it or not, they CONCEDED the bump stock for SOMEONE ELSE TO DEFEND. And worse, they conceded defending it before the fight even BEGAN. It’s like they turned into Frenchmen overnight….
You can defend the NRA ALL you want… This was a chickensh*t move, and that hasn’t escaped ANYONE. They ducked to avoid a fight when they should have come out swinging! So much for the “Stand and Fight” hard@sses, huh? I’ve seen bigger balls on field mice….
So now I guess it’s up to the OTHER 120 million NON-NRA gun owners to do their job FOR them. And thanks to their stupidity, that job just became 5 times harder….

      • Jim October 13, 2017, 9:44 am

Very true. Another thing is that allowing the possibility of a bump-stock ban concedes that the weapon is the problem, not the user. That is completely untrue and is caving to the gun-grabbers’ main theme. (OK, I know that this has already been done to some degree with previous firearm limitations.)

      • Jay October 14, 2017, 5:27 am

Send the NRA an email telling them of your disgust like I did, I’m going to resend my life membership and they will never see another red cent if they keep their position on my freedom to buy firearm accessories whether I use them or not! Compromise on freedoms and sooner than later you have none!

  • Pat J October 13, 2017, 7:14 am

Maybe, there would be civil war in the wake of door-to-door gun confiscation. But like taxpayer bail-outs for Wall Street bankers, and “forever wars” for empire, I suspect that Americans would bitch a little and take it. I would also expect a great deal of neighborly cooperation in the confiscation: “That guy makes his own bullets”. The Romans would have obliterated an uncooperative house leaving only a grieving, desperate, homeless widow for everyone to see and fear. They understood public relations, and I would expect nothing less from our government and military when they are turned against us.

    • AK Johnny 1 October 13, 2017, 9:40 am

Speak for yourself pal…. Firstoff, we OUTNUMBER ALL ARMED govt employees on the federal, state and local level, by over 120 to 1…. Unless we cooperate, they ain’t taking shee-it. A door to door govt confiscation is a death wish. There’ll be a rifle pointing at em from every 3rd window in America. Rightly so…
Confiscation squads start appearing in our towns to force the issue? They’ll get their brains blown out by those of the non-compliant persuasion. I’M one of them. You wanna lay down, go right ahead.

    • Michael Keim October 13, 2017, 11:45 am

You forget about the 3%ers. We don’t give up anything. How about you?

    • JoshO October 13, 2017, 12:14 pm

What proportion of gun owners ARE the police and military? Foolish to automatically believe they would be complicit. None of the many that I know would.
What proportion of gun owners WERE the military? If I was willing to risk my life in Baghdad for someone else’s freedom you better bet your ass that I’ll risk it for my own here.

  • Josh October 13, 2017, 7:12 am

    Ha! Good luck with THAT.

  • frank October 13, 2017, 7:11 am

Rosenthal is a typical New York city radical socialistic scumbag, like most of those city dwellers. His influence stops at the G.W. bridge.

    • Tom Hart October 13, 2017, 7:37 am

      Frank, well said!

  • FAL Phil October 13, 2017, 7:04 am

The whole concept of confiscation is hilarious. The Left tells us it is impossible to round up 30 million illegal aliens who leave constant daily papper trails, and the are going to round up 300 million firearms, many of which have no or liitle documentation at all?

  • Joseph October 13, 2017, 6:35 am

A person could kill or maim with a simple .22 youth rifle as well as an AR 15. It’s not the rifle that kills, it’s the nut attached to the trigger that kills.

  • Gary October 13, 2017, 6:16 am

Strange….as soon as the shootings were being reported from Las Vegas dems and snowflakes insisted that we talk about it right now now NOW. But when Harvey Weinstein is callled out for his little shenanigans, there’s no outrage and call to arms….immediately. Only when they sit on their hands and people are noticing they start to come out against it. Do you see the irony? This is why you can’t have a reasonable conversation about guns with these types of people who think this way. They have an agenda and follow that agenda. When you have a turd in the punch bowl like Weinstein, they literally hide it cuz they know that’s their bread and butter and influence. They don’t care about people getting shot, they literally just want to take away guns and will use anything to make their point. It’s sickening how indifferent they really are. But to the point of the “dangerous” rifles. Okay guys lets be honest, no one will every LIKELY ever need an ar or ak or any gun like that. HOWEVER, that’s not the freaking point. I enjoy my ak. I use it responsibly. The number of these types of weapons and owners faaaaaar out ways the criminals who use and obtain them illegally. So again why can’t we who have demonstrated that we can be responsible use these weapons? I’m not even going to get into the differences between our civilian vs military models. You all know the difference. And so do they. They just want to make it sound like we all are a problem. Make your voice heard. Speak out against these biased jerks. That’s the only way to affectivly fight back these days.

    • Louis DeLucia October 13, 2017, 6:56 am

Did anyone discuss the possibility of taking “not all of them, but quite a few” of the automobiles in this country when the terrorists use vehicles to kill and maim. No. We once again face the old adage that guns kill people not the idiots and mentally unstable INDIVIDUALS who use them for their evil purpose. Let’s hope our elected officials are intelligent enough to not start a civil war.

    • JoshO October 13, 2017, 12:18 pm

If an unknown number of intruders with unknown armament and unknown intentions are gaining access to my home, you better bet your ass I’m reaching for a rifle. There’s a reason the police and military use them to clear structures — they work the best.
The “let’s be honest they aren’t necessary” narrative is asinine, false, and keep your mouth shut.

  • Dewey October 5, 2017, 10:32 pm

Wow, you are a paranoid, delusional yahoo. Civil war? I highly doubt it. And which would be the side “with no guns”? I don’t think that it would be the ones doing the confiscating, which would never happen anyway. The fact that it will never happen has nothing to do with fear on the government’s part.

    • TJ October 13, 2017, 5:27 am

      Dewey,
He is not paranoid or delusional in his statement about door to door confiscation that would cause that type of reaction, if anything your extremely way off in saying it would never happen.
I was once told “that an unguarded strength is a double weakness.” If for one minute we think its not possible then we are fooling ourselves and we deserve the consequences.
Who would have thought that the NRA would side with the government to try to pass a bill that would seemingly be just to outlaw the “Bump Stock” but if you read closer the law would not only ban those but eventually any other accessories you want to buy to put on the AR that THEY (the government) would think could speed up your ability to fire more rounds faster then what THEY think you should be able too. I had a slide fire stock once and it was cool for the first couple of seconds and 2oo rounds later but I took it off and sold it last week for more than double what I paid three years ago. I didn’t keep it because it wasn’t for me and I hated to see that much money eject out of it so fast.
Should they be band or outlawed? no more then cars or alcohol. Anyway I think the article is spot on and we need to continue to be vigilant and keep watch over the strength of the 2nd amendment. Watch out for the snakes from congress who tickle our itching ears before you know it you will be caught and there will be no hope to defend ourselves.
      Thank you,
      Tj

      • Gary October 13, 2017, 7:47 am

        Tj,
I wouldn’t waste your time trying to argue with someone like this. Let him bury his head in the sand. It’s this type of mentality that has allowed this type of cancer to spread. One way or another, it’s gonna go down sooner or later. I just pray it’s not in my or my kids lifetime cuz if it does I’m moving lol

    • Jeff October 13, 2017, 6:00 am

Well, considering there are millions of well armed guin owners who would rather die than give up their guns, there absolutely would be a civil war. I do partially agree with you that it’s unlikely to happen, at least for now. Who knows how the government will be in 20 years though.

    • George H. Cox October 13, 2017, 7:45 am

The fact that “…it will never happen…” has EVERTHING to do with fear on the part of the Government.

    • Colonialgirl October 13, 2017, 8:05 am

      Hey moron;
      GO try reading WHY we have the SECOND AMENDMENT in the Constitution;
It is so we can DEFEND ourselves from a tyrannical government and a government that tries to confiscate all our firearms would be EXACTLY THAT.

    • Dan October 13, 2017, 9:46 am

At Concord and Lexington the standing government tried to seize arms and it lead to the Revolutionary War. Don’t think it could not happen again. We have seen what an un-restrictied Government can do. We’ve seen what Exec Orders can do. Today we have property seized without Due Process, we have people placed on ‘no-Fly’ lists based on innuendo, we have ‘Government employees’ ignore and bypass the ‘Laws’ all the time. And, they want us to ‘trust them’. I will never give up my rights, any of them, without a fight. And if it comes to an armed fight, so be it.

    • AK Johnny 1 October 13, 2017, 9:48 am

Dewey, fear is EXACTLY the reason the govt would not try an outright compulsory confiscation. We outnumber ALL armed govt employees on the federal, state AND local level by OVER 120 to 1…. I’m sorry, but NO entity prevails against numbers like that. And most govt employees, if mandated the task of door to door gun collection, WOULD RESIGN before undertaking such a foolish task. It’s a death wish, and they KNOW it. This isn’t Britain or Australia…..

    • JoshO October 13, 2017, 12:20 pm

Of course the government is afraid of us, why else would they put so much effort and expense into disarmament?

  • SuperG October 5, 2017, 11:52 am

Was the the same NYT reporter who got Mr. Joshua assassinated by publishing his home address? Too often these liberal inflict pain and suffering onto others and are never held accountable for it. But the one thing I do know is to never trust anything published by a newspaper that has “Times” in its name.

  • Mark N. October 5, 2017, 2:42 am

I don’t care –and he should not care–how many of “those” weapons people own, because, after all, you can only shoot one at a time. Doh. As we all know, but all of the commentators and pundits refuse to accept, ARs have plenty of uses in sport and hunting, uses beyond just killing other people.
And he obviously knows nothing about rifle ballistics or “armor piercing ammunition.” Just some catch phrases he has heard. And he is dead wrong. First, the general public has no clue whether the Vegas shooter was using “armor piercing” ammo because the police have not said. Second, it wouldn’t matter because no one in the crowd was wearing Level IV armor. Third, there is absolutely no evidence that “armor piercing” ammo causes any more traumatic injuries than other ammo (but if I were to guess, good old soft points would likely do a whole lot more damage than a FMJ “armor piercing” round). In short, armor piercing ammo adds nothing to the lethality of a gun excpet for armored targets–whch is no one on the street except SWAT teams.

I am so so tired of all of these ridiculous, uneducated and irrational reactions to “black swan” events that don’t even jiggle the meter on the murder rate in the United States. I am tired of hearing of this great “gun violence epidemic,” when the facts are that the murder rate today is less than half of what it was in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, and back to where it was in the 1950s after WWII.

  • John R Pyles 111 October 4, 2017, 7:31 pm

First the CONSTITUTION is the law of the land for all ,everyone, not a choice few as some on the left would think including the author of this op ed Mr. Rosenthal. Maybe we also need to talk about the media spin and outright lies they print under the protection of the CONSTITUTION but I guess that is a total different story think about that Mr. Rosenthal too which I use the term Mr. loosely.

    • Zupglick October 13, 2017, 9:27 am

I hate to disabuse your belief but the first Supreme Court Chief Justice under Tomas Jefferson handed down the opinion that the Constitution is NOT law but a guideline. That ruling has never been challenged or changed. It’s how the government has been getting away with a lot of the sh_t it has.

  • woodchuckwacker666 October 4, 2017, 7:26 pm

… it’s very amazing the number of mass shootings that have taken place in America since the last administration got into the White House because there is an agenda behind it that most American’s fail to realize… each every time that one happens the “hue & cry” from the liberal Democrats is heard for the total banning of any gun that they deem is unfit for ownership because it scares them… if they ever manage to do so it would be an open invitation for America’s enimies to invade knowing that they would have it very easy if every one was disarmed as Hitler & Stalin learned all those years ago while they murdered millions of people for their agendas… & that is why we have a Second Amendment to protect the people from the savages of the NWO trying to over throw it thru wanton violence against American citizens…
