Officers of the New York Police Department are upset about having to pay out-of-pocket for new service pistols. New NYPD officers are supplied with modified Glock 17 Gen 4 pistols for duty while the bulk of veteran officers carry older Glock 19 pistols.

If officers want to “upgrade” to the newer Glock 17 they will have to pay the $525 themselves. The Glock 17 is the original full-size service pistol while the Glock 19 is the smaller compact size service pistol.

New recruits are issued a duty pistol for free once they are sworn in. They have the choice of carrying a Glock 17, a Glock 19 or a SIG P226. It seems that most now are picking the Glock 17.

In addition to the improved Gen 4 features, the Glock 17 has a longer slide and barrel assembly. This improves projectile ballistics and provides users with a longer sight radius which makes it easier to place precise shots.

The fourth generation models add several important ergonomic improvements including a reduced grip size in order to fit a wider range of user hand sizes. The grips can also be customized with interchangeable backstraps. Glock also enlarged the magazine release button and made it reversible for left-handed users. Additionally, these guns have an improved recoil spring assembly for a smoother recoil impulse.

Inspector Raymond Caroli, commander of the NYPD firearms and tactics section told the New York Post “It’s the ergonomics of this gun … that makes this a better gun.”

“If the Glock 17 can help us shoot better, that increases our safety,” said another officer. “I personally believe the department should help out in paying for the new gun, or, at least, provide an even swap. Not everybody has $525 on hand to make a purchase like that.”

The Glock 17 also has a longer grip than the Glock 19 which helps shooters with bigger hands control the gun. Normally it also provides improved capacity but things are a little different in the NYPD.

The NYPD requires limited-capacity Glock 17 magazines that only hold 15 rounds. Standard Glock 17 mags hold 17 rounds of ammunition.

“Half the class laughed when the instructor said that,” said one NYPD officer. “Good ol’ NYPD, they’re restricting us yet again, only handing out the 15 option.”

“Why would you select a firearm that can hold 17 rounds, but then only allow 15 to be carried? It defies common sense. Officers may need those rounds if they find themselves in an active-shooter situation like Dallas or Orlando.”

Citizens of New York also have a magazine capacity restriction among other onerous gun control laws they must abide. Magazine capacity is limited to 10 rounds for the state’s residents and visitors.

The Second Amendment doesn’t differentiate between who is allowed to have Constitutional protections. The civil authorities
should have no more or less Constitutional protection than any other citizen. When one group of people believe they are entitled to some sort of special privilege or acess to a right no one else processes, trouble is born. Those who are in a position
to govern or enforce the laws of the governed, should neither expect or receive exception from the law. Our problem there is
no hardship to service as was expected at the time of our Republics founding. The problem of people staying in office for too
many terms would be eliminated. Same thing for public servants who have accustomed them selves to special privilege.
Training and readiness should be an ongoing component for all law enforcement entities.

Law Enforcement should have the same constitutional rights as any other person, no special exception or privilege
for any one. Same access for all law abiding citizens, simple application just as the framers intended. How ever when
one group assumes or is given a special exception a schism develops between the governed, and those who govern.
Simple what’s good for the goose is equally good for the gander.

What kind of idiot compares their right to carry with a cop’s sworn duty. Sorry kids, you’re not out there on police calls all day long, and you don’t have a chance of running into bad guys that you’ve arrested while off duty and out with your family. Now let me be clear, I really think there should be no ammo restriction for anyone, but since there is at this point, why penalize the cops who are there for you? And yes cupcake, cops DO sometimes, especially in big cities, come across crimes in progress, it’s not all cleaning up after the fact. Boy, I bet you didn’t like being called a kid or a cupcake, so then DON’T paint with a broad brush and call the rookies snowflakes, they’re out there handling the same calls as the veteran officers, and have the SAME chance of getting killed, or more likely, injured, while out there serving and protecting. And what about that special moron who said they know what they’re getting into when they took the job? Maybe, but maybe not, at least when it comes to being the best equipped as they can be, THAT should be the expectation, that they should be able to carry as many rounds as the gun is capable of holding is simply common sense, and should be the norm, not the exception, for those whose DUTY it is to serve and protect. Once again, as a non LEO, nobody is mandated by law to act, and a non-LEO will never face a criminal dereliction of duty charge for failing to act, yet an officer surely could. So people, you’re not the same, not even close.

Full disclosure, I live in Ohio where there is NO BS ammo restrictions for any non LEOs, yet there IS for many officers who are limited by policy to what their standard max is for their particular issue. Still better than New York. And yes, I’ve been there and done that, 25+ years as a big city urban cop, and have been involved in shootings and innumerable use of force situations, I know what of I speak.

Why should citizens be denied the right to have supieror protection and cops be allowed to have it ?

  • ejharb December 27, 2016, 12:51 pm

I’d stick with the 19 over the 17! The 15rd limit not withstanding I shoot the 19 better and it’s easier to ccw in the supertuck. As for $525 give me a break! If you have issues with mustering that kind of money you can’t afford to live in nyc. That isn’t hardly half a rent payment.

  • Bobo December 6, 2016, 10:08 am

Most of the NYPD police only shoot their guns when it comes to a yearly qualification. Whether they shoot the 19 or 17 their proficiency is lacking due to limited range time. The politicians also have mandated for several years that the guns have a 11 to 12 pound pull. The theory is they’ll think between shots even though accuracy suffers.

Glocks just suck period. If theyre so great why are they on their umpteenth upgrade? 1911 is 116 years of perfection. Ill pay more attention when glock has more world war wins. Until then shut the glock up. Theyre just garbage.

    • carter December 8, 2016, 4:04 pm

      news flash:
handguns havent won or lost any modern wars. they are all but irrelevant to the outcome of virtually every military engagement. also, the 1911 most commonly issued and carried today have a lot of modifications and revisions compared to the original.

$525? NY not allowed to use Glocks blue label program?

  • T December 2, 2016, 3:20 pm

The civilians lack one thing that cops have its called TRAINING..Hours upon hours of training for situations like Orlando and Dallas are why cops should have the 17 rounds. Why you might ask? Because civilians will not face traffic stops, domestics, active shooter situations, bank robberies,on the run murder suspects and the list goes on. Having a gun and all that comes with it is an earned privilege and our law enforcement have earned that right. There are different lifestyles civilian vs law enforcement obviously but don’t limit the people who are out here protecting our a** from things that we will probably never face but they have to deal with on a daily basis. As a civilian we should be training at the range and not just be content with shooting well at a piece of paper that isn’t shooting back and leaving there with a false sense or security that you will perform well when needed while under extreme duress to protect your life of your loved ones.

    • DRAINO December 3, 2016, 6:59 am

My point that Cops should have no more than any other civilian does is legally authorized……the MORONIC LAWS! Civilians should not be limited to what or how much they can buy or carry or own…..neither should cops. BUT….If the general public is limited, then LEO’s should be as well. I have served as well, and I am not one to give any LE a hard time or take for granted what they do everyday. But remember one fact…..they had a choice to choose that profession. So….When it comes to the right of self-protection……civilians have just as much right as LE does.

    • Blasted Cap December 4, 2016, 7:00 am

Here’s an update, they aren’t active duty military, so stop calling everyone else a civilian. They are civilian law enforcement. Never hear paid firefighters, who are also public servants, call everyone else a civilian. Was called a civilian by a cop when I was active duty and in uniform.
Guess that’s just part of the holier than thou attitude.

    • carter December 8, 2016, 4:10 pm

self defense isnt a privilege, it’s a right that some states and municipalities choose to violate.
also, i would bet my entire safe that several times more rounds are fired in training by american civilians than american cops, collectively each year. Also, I would bet the percentage of civilian gun owners who train at least monthly is higher than the percentage of cops nationwide, and it is the latter groups job to be the armed protectors, when opportunity arises anyway (often times, cops dont get to the scene of a violent crime until after civilians are wounded or killed).
it is possible that the percentage of cops doing force on force trainig at least once a year is still higher than civilian gun owners, but i’m not sure. I do it several times a year. most law enforcment training is shooting at static paper targets just like much of the civilian training.

        Carter, Very well said, sir.

    • Mikhail Weiss December 9, 2016, 1:01 pm

Unless things have changed, NYC police need only pass shooting qualification twice a year and fire 50 rounds per qualification. That’s only 100 rounds per year, firing 50 rounds at stationary targets at 7-, 15-, and
25-yard distances. A minimum of 39 hits is required to qualify. That is not sufficient for proficiency, though it may be adequate for basic safe handling and familiarization.

These poor little special snowflakes are upset because they want the taxpayers to buy their equipment for them. Guess what snowflakes, if you are working as a productive citizen in the skilled trades you have to supply your own tools, no reason why these tax fattened whiners should not have to do the same.

    • Wayne December 2, 2016, 12:33 pm

Snowflakes? Do you realize how little they get paid? Where were you when the Dallas shooting went down, sir?

      • Blasted Cap December 4, 2016, 5:10 pm

Be willing to bet an NYPD rookie gets paid better than any E-3 in the military at the end of their first enlistment, snowflake.
Where were you when Mosul was taking place. Or any of the other real lovely walks in the park? Snowflake.

        • Karl T Murphy December 8, 2017, 7:13 pm

Many Rookies are also Veterans of Military service and in any case both are worthy and not mutually exclusive, as a Certified firearms Instructor, I worked hard every year at remedial training to help failed members re-qualify and it was lots of work, these were great students and I saw massive improvement in all students and encouraged all to frequent the Range as much as possible to get better skills, no reason not to except laziness and making an appointment with someone like me willing to sacrifice the time since I was not getting paid either.

  • jstert December 2, 2016, 10:50 am

i would rather see police agencies return to a decent revolver with better training and more range time for most patrol officers. it seems that most unplanned leo-bad guy shoot outs that go beyond 6 shots have alot of leo lead flying wild. there seems to be too much faith placed in finding the magic, wonder nine tool, rather than training and practice. if a semiauto is needed make it a 5.56 ar platform.

  • Mitch Barkett December 2, 2016, 9:14 am

America’s big cities are America’s ball and chain. If you want a better life get out.

  • Nick Carroll December 2, 2016, 7:54 am

First off, I don’t care what they’re using as a duty weapon, they need to stop allowing simpleton politicians forcing the insane notion that a 12 pound trigger will prevent accidental discharges to continue! It’s no wonder there are instances that police have fired a vastly stupid number of rounds at an assailant with a relatively few number of hits to stop him because the trigger is almost ridiculously unusable for the job. More wild shots mean more flying lead. That simple. I teach at an indoor range in northeast PA and we have a large number of NYPD officers who visit the region and bring their duty weapons with them in the shop. I’ve been allowed to send a few rounds downrange with these oversized paperweights and have been befuddled by the absolutely horrible things. There has never been anything but confused frustration exhibited by any of the officers regarding the trigger weight, let alone that a Glock is the end all and be all of pistol options. Personally, I hate them. Just my opinion, so take it or leave it. The trigger guard is too narrow for any form of glove, the grip is way too fat, and the grip angle is too harsh, in my opinion. Getting rid of the finger knurls is a good start and after that backstrap options are better. If they have to use Glocks at all, please, please get back to a manageable trigger weight in order for these guys to do their jobs safely and efficiently. They’re trained to use judgement when deciding whether to shoot or not, so let them do it correctly with the proper tool.

      Great comment…

  • DRAINo December 1, 2016, 8:18 am

Sorry….If the civilians are only allowed 10 round mags, then the Cops should only have 10 round mags. And every Cop should have to go through the same process that the civilians do to be able to carry a firearm on duty or off. Show justification (and just being a Cop isn’t a good enough reason), qualify, get and maintain a permit and recurring training. If the civilians have to do it, so should the cops…….as well as any armed guards who protect anyone/anything in that crap hole of a city or any other city that places undue strenuous restrictions on a constitutional right. Americanism….NOT Globalism!!!

    • Wayne December 2, 2016, 12:36 pm

Tend to agree with you. I bought a 19 rd Glock 19 for that very reason. Home invasions are seldom done in one man attempts. The pistol we were recommended only hold 6 rounds and it takes an average of four rounds to put a guy down, IF he’s average size and NOT higher than a kite!

      • Karl T Murphy December 8, 2017, 7:18 pm

        A 19 round Glock 19 ?
Where did you buy it ?
My Glock 17 only came with 17 round magazines, are yours longer or a plus 4 ?
I know the Glock 19 has a 15 round magazine normally.

    • Chris Mallory December 2, 2016, 3:13 pm

      Cops are civilians.

      • DRAINO December 2, 2016, 12:39 pm

Then my point is valid. In order to be a Cop, they should adhere to the same requirements as anyone who is not a Cop. No special treatment, equipment or otherwise.

  • Will Drider December 1, 2016, 12:11 am

NYPD carried .38 Spl revolvers thru to 94. So they have always been slow on the pickup. To change out handguns for a force of 35,000 officers would not be cheap even if they did a trade in. NYC being so anti gun, they may not even consider trade in for civ resale. Unless a real bargain price who wants a pistol with NY-2 (12LB) triggers and the flood of used Glocks 19, Sig P226 and S&W 5956 completing with new production. Pretty ugly all around.
