Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is beginning to see the fruits of his labor for the gun control lobby.

After the state assembly voted this year to allow local governments to ban guns on city property, the city of Alexandria just outside of Washington, D.C., decided unanimously this weekend to do just that.

Beginning on July 1, it will be a Class 1 misdemeanor (up to one year in jail or a fine up to $2,500) to possess, carry or transport firearms or ammunition in any city-owned or operated building, park or recreational or community facility as well as special events requiring a permit on public streets, roads, alleys, sidewalks or public right of way.

The ordinance also prohibits guns “in any public street, road, alley, sidewalk or public right-of-way or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public and is being used by or is adjacent to a permitted event or an event that would otherwise require a permit.”

Phil Van Cleave, President of the gun rights group the Virginia Citizen’s Defense League, accused the city council of being “driven by emotion” in an email to supporters.

“For a few minutes it looked like the Alexandria City Council might have some members who actually wanted to consider the concerns of gun owners. Some logic and reason seemed to want to rear its head,” he said. “But no, logic and reason was just too much for City Council to handle. They are driven by emotion and simply want to impose their will on the citizens of the Commonwealth. Logic and reason would screw that up.”

Pro-gun supporters outnumbered anti-gun activists by a two-to-one margin at the hearing, according to Van Cleave.

While the left-leaning council was unlikely to kill the ordinance, the VCDL was hoping to gain exemptions for Virginia residents licensed to carry firearms. The ordinance does include exemptions for military and law enforcement personnel, but it does not exempt CHP holders.

“I can’t really describe my feeling of disgust with Alexandria’s City Council over this vote,” Van Cleave said. “Because they don’t like guns they don’t give a damn if their ordinance endangers CHP holders who are under active threat.”

Van Cleave and others also noted that the “adjacent road” language may prohibit firearm possession outside the home for anyone who lives on a street bordering an event location.

“[The city council doesn’t] care that during an event, everyone who lives on an adjacent street cannot leave or enter their property if armed. You are held hostage until the event or events are over,” Van Cleave said.

Local media coverage noted that the council heard from residents both for and against the resolution. But Van Cleave pointed out that anti-gun Delegate Mark Levine was asked “gratuitous questions” by the city council, which took time from the pro-gun speakers and weighted public testimony in favor of the ordinance.

Alexandria’s decision represents a sea change in how the state regulates gun control. Prior to 2020, local governments were not permitted to ban firearms on city property or enact measures without permission from the state. This year, however, the Democrat-controlled legislature voted to overturn that prohibition and allow municipalities to create gun control policies that expand upon state laws.

Van Cleave called on his supporters to boycott Alexandria businesses unless those businesses post a sign welcoming gun owners. He also encouraged pro-gun residents to run for city council:

“If you live in Alexandria, consider running for City Council.  Let’s get those worthless individuals out of power. All that said, VCDL isn’t necessarily through with Alexandria just yet. Stay tuned.”

First off, I think that the U.S. Supreme Court struck down much of what the story says is now required when the City of Chicago was sued. I could be wrong.

But more importantly, the rabid America liberal left will claim that OUR 2nd Amendment was written with regards to hunting and no one needs most firearms. They intentionally leave out that although the framers of OUR Constitution that penned the first Amendments to make minor corrections to OUR Constitution did have hunting in mind but not so much the four legged animals as much as they were referring to the two legged tyrannical ones. We have a 2nd Amendment and should use it as intended.

I feel for the freedom lovers who did go vote and to the ones who didn’t vote and let this happen,i bet you vote next time! Until then enjoy your disarmed and defenseless lives.

Florida is right behind VA. Check the FL Statutes. When emergency is declared. the sale, trade or display is in violation of those statutes. And some small towns such as Melbourne Beach declared emergency invoking Ch. 16 of their Ord. Prohibiting the ownership or sale of firearms. It wasn’t published in the town website. No one in town knows.

  • chumly June 26, 2020, 11:05 pm

That would be “see change” (not sea change).

    • Peteyraymond June 27, 2020, 7:24 pm

      No, “sea change” is correct.

Little by little Americans lose a little more of our rights due to the leftist anti-Americans elect to city, county, state and federal offices. Step up to the line folks, dig in your heels and make a goddam stand against this unconstitutional over reach by all these Blue state tyrants who bow to the boys of BLM and flip off hard working, law abiding Americans. If ANY local or state law infringes on a constitutionally guaranteed right I say get ready to fight those who are imposing their political will upon us. Stand and fight or grovel and die!

Tex we need trump to win 2020 in such a big way. Never believed that such a huge portion of our media would be so fraudulent. Whenever I see a home with a Biden sign on the lawn I literally hope they don’t have kids that are also exposed to such Anti American fools.

Virginia gun gun owners should file a criminal complaint with the DOJ Civil Rights Division for the state legislature abridging their Second Amendment rights. If the legislature had passed a law to limit the right to vote (i.e. a poll tax), the Civil Rights Division would be all over it. There will now be a patchwork of laws and ordinances in Virginia, so that a resident who legally possesses a firearm in the county may be arrested and jailed for transporting that firearm across a city limit in that same county.

  • Dee Williamson June 26, 2020, 7:06 pm

Calling all criminals, gang members and thugs. Virginia is wide open. Come and get it.

  • John June 26, 2020, 4:05 pm

The Sheriffs are correct; they upheld their oath of office. Read this: “An unconstitutional act is not law, it confers no rights; it imposes no duties; affords no protection; it creates no office; it is in legal contemplation, as inoperative as though it had never been passed.” Norton v. Shelby County, 118 US 425 p. 442

“Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved, there can be no rule making or legislation which would abrogate them” Miranda v. Arizona, 384 US 436 p. 491

The people of Virginia must unite and vote out the politicians who violate the 2A. The state senators should be forced to surrender 5% of their pay and give it to sheriffs and below in rank. If this doesn’t work, remove another 5% until they understand the will of the people is the law, not the politicians. Vote themk out and remove them by force only if necessary.

This guy, Northam, is really special. First he makes a big deal about saying it is ok to ‘abort’ a baby after it is born. Now he wants to ignore the constitution of the United States. Them Virginia Demoncraps really found someone special to run their neighborhood.

  • David Welsh June 26, 2020, 12:03 pm

The gun owners if tgat town need to ,as a group, openly defy that unconstitutional crap by carrying all around those “banned” places. If they don’t, then they’ve surrendered. And don’t look to the Supremes to “interpret” what is a clearly and simply worded amendment.

  • BT June 26, 2020, 11:31 am

Why can’t these council members be arrested for treason against the USA and violating the civil rights of the Alexandria residents and non-residents? They may not stay arrested long, but paying for expensive attorneys and tarnishing their names/agendas would be a financial and reputational burden to them personally. Burn up their finances thru litigation. That’s what the anti’s do to gunowners and gun manufacturers.

I have for more than a decade attempted to educate the supposed pro-2nd community as to the reason men like George Mason, and Richard Henry Lee wanted the right to bear arms emphasized in the Bill of Rights. The reason was not to protect an individual right, although that right is essential to the first thirteen words of the amendment that clearly states the purpose of the amendment.
There are 3 provisions in the Constitution that would protect the right if “We the People” would perform the Duty. However, I’ve noted, as have others who happen to be constitutional scholars, that the pro-2nd community want nothing to do with the powers that the Framers vested in us so that we wouldn’t have to worry about rogue politicians infringing our rights, we could indict and arrest them.
Why would you go into court using the same failing argument that cannot be supported by history and law, and expect different results other than to ultimately lose all our rights?

  • R. U. Atroll June 26, 2020, 11:07 am

Fairfax County is the epicenter of this Democrat National Socialist movement.

I’d say cut it off and give to Maryland, but there are some good folks in western MD that have enough problems.

  • D.J. June 26, 2020, 11:00 am

    Attention VA. Criminals :

You have now been given notice that looting , pillaging ,
open theft , insurrection , rape , murder & etc. , are now
accepted conduct in your area .

Be advised : no armed citizens will obstruct your new Utopia .

Enjoy , but be safe .

    • Calvin Johnson June 26, 2020, 12:57 pm

Yup. And not just in Virginia, the same applies to many areas controlled by the Demoncraps. Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago and on and on. Arson, theft, vandalism, assault and various other statutes are ignored as long as the stated intent is to destroy Trump or to destroy the U.S.A.

  • skipNclair June 26, 2020, 10:29 am

The city owns nothing, the state owns nothing, the federal govt. owns nothing, the people own it all, and all things are done with the peoples money, therefore the logic is not only lost here in regards to ownership, the 1st and 2nd amendments are trampled on, and Mulberry Vs Madison clearly applies here. Have you noticed these traitors smiling and applauding their treason?

  • skipNclair June 26, 2020, 10:24 am

Mulberry VS Madison clearly applies here folks.

  • Rangemaster11B June 26, 2020, 8:12 am

Have these people never heard of the Supreme Court? May be this lunacy will finally get SCOTUS to hear a 2A case.

  • Wilko June 26, 2020, 8:06 am

I live in an enlightened state – no sarcasm intended.
South Dakota law specifically FORBIDS any jurisdiction at any level within the state from placing any rule or regulation on gun ownership or possession, other than the very liberal laws of the state. Further, our laws state: No firearm, owned by any resident of the State of South Dakota, shall be subject to registration by any jurisdiction. It is also legal for any law abiding citizen to carry a concealed firearm without any permit required.

    • BW June 26, 2020, 8:43 am

Freakin’ eh. That’s how it should be EVERYWHERE in the USA.
      Glad to hear of that!

  • Griffendad June 26, 2020, 8:03 am

Perfect place for the Walking Dead to really start. Liberal Asshat Zombies. Slavery starts again while they continue to abort the unborn. Hell has it’s place for them.

  • Harper Jones June 26, 2020, 7:20 am

From what I have read there is a concentrated area in the north part of the state that is very left leaning that vote for people like northam into office, kinda like LA county. The very reason the Electoral College HAS to be kept in place !!!!

    • michael smith June 27, 2020, 8:44 pm

I think most of the people that live in that part of the state are bureaucrats that work (eyes roll) in DC on tax payers dime. They don’t want competition and they are for the corrupt deep state. My heart sinks when I read this crap, because very soon we the people are going to have to bow our knee to these butts, or we will have to do like our for fathers did and fight another war. I really see no other choices, unless you become an expat.

Who keeps voting these idiots into office? When and how did Va. become such an anti-gun state? They’re now looking like a Yankee state…Mass, RI, NY, NJ, Conn. And how is Northam even s
till in office after all the black face controversy? SMH.

    • Barnjoer June 26, 2020, 8:17 am

The town, streets, parks etc BELONG TO THE TAX PAYERS of that city NOT the CITY!!!!!

When the McCluskys were charged for literally standing to protect their home from a BLM mob , That should have been enough to start fighting the left. I know it’s been building for longer then that incident but that video of that couple doing what should be text book when it comes to protecting your property/lives while showing restraint when being confronted by a BLM mob who crashed a gate , made direct threats and brandished weapons. How can anyone with kids vote for a democrat. Soros owned DAs are eager to charge anyone on the right that dares defy them and the criminal supporting ways they are pushing . Don’t only vote for Trump , make sure you get others to pull the lever for a straight republican ticket.
