The PC Carbine series has been a runaway success for Ruger and the company isn’t about to slow things down any time soon. Right now Ruger is announcing their new PC Charger, a takedown pistol based on the PC Carbine and Ruger Charger series.

Chambered for 9mm Luger, the new PC Charger uses Ruger or Glock-pattern magazines with an included adapter. It has a 6.5-inch takedown barrel assembly and a semi-chassis grip assembly that uses AR-style grips with Picatinny stocks, single-point slings and pistol braces.

The PC Charger is handy for small game hunting, excellent for self-defense and home protection, and great fun for any and every kind of recreational shooting out there. It has the ergonomics of a cut-down rifle — which in a way, it is — and longer-than-average barrel that will boost muzzle velocities higher than just about every other conventional handgun.

Configured as sold it’s a pistol, but it can be more if one is willing to go through the NFA process and modify it into a short-barreled rifle with a full stock. One can also keep it as a pistol and use it with a stabilizing brace.

Given the wide range of possible configurations Ruger doesn’t include these other accessories or sights with the PC Charger. The reality is that most people who will buy a PC Charger have a specific configuration in mind and it would be a waste for Ruger to include extras.

That helps keep the price down and the PC Charger, with either 17-round or 10-round magazines, has a suggested retail price of just $799. Typically Ruger’s pricing in-stores and online is less than MSRP but the PC Carbine is just so new and different that real-world pricing might be close to full price, at least for the near future.

The rear Picatinny mount is machined from 7075-T6 alloy aluminum for strength and rigidity with sling adapters, stocks or braces and it has two quick-detach sling sockets for more traditional sling setups.

The Charger’s receiver is also 7075-T6 aluminum and features a single integral flattop rail for red dots and other optics or iron sights. The barrel assembly incorporates a modular M-Lok forend that can accommodate even more accessories like the included 6-o’clock hand stop and is a great way to add a scout light or laser sight.

Like full-size PC Carbines the PC Charger uses Ruger’s dead blow bolt with an internal tungsten weight to ensure smooth operation opening and closing the bolt while firing. It uses 10/22 trigger components and comes with a target trigger, standard.

The controls are also reversible to suit both left- and right-handed shooters including the charging handle and magazine release. All of the aluminum components have a hard-coat anodized finish and the steel components, including the hammer-forged barrel, have a blued finish.

The 6.5-inch barrel is threaded 1/2-28 for use with popular 9mm muzzle devices and suppressors. Every PC Charger ships with one magazine and a set of wrenches to disassemble and reassemble the chassis.

While the 9mm AR pistol is really popular right now, the PC Charger, without a need for a buffer and with its built-in takedown barrel assembly, makes for an even more interesting and flexible setup, and Ruger’s going to sell these by the truckload.

If you can think of a use for the very different and very cool PC Charger, then there’s no reason not to pick one up. Honestly plenty of people are going to buy a new Charger and come up with a reason for a second, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong there.

I love my PC Charger. It is just a fun and accurate gun to shoot. I wish people would just try it before they speak about it. Just shoot it and try to keep the smile off your face.

These are the type of guns that anti gun people focus on. There’s no real use for a gun of this type that makes sense unless your a person who has bad intentions

Are you for real? The radical God hating commies have stated repeatedly from decades back that universal disarmament is the goal. They want you hunting rifles and shotguns too Elmer Fudd. When they leftist scum reach their goal the common man wont even be allowed a flint lock with out major harassment and expense.

Bill Ruger turn over in his grave. What a piece of looking junk.

Really, a 6 1/2″ barrel? How much does one gain, in velocity, comparing a 5 1/2 threaded barrel on my XDM. That is a bulky oversized bunch of metal and plastic. Adding a brace, hardly makes this any better. Go buy a Keltec Sub2000. That would be just as compact collapsed, but with a 16″ barrel. I love and own several Ruger’s, but this is not worth $500.00 let alone $800.00

@ Johnnyraygun, We arent talking about velocity. Adding a brace makes it A LOT BETTER. But, I can consistently make rapid shots out to 200 meters on a man sized plate with my 5.5″ pistol caliber carbine. (I aslo have the Ruger 9mm PCC just not this new charger) I’d be willing to put money down that you could NOT do so with your XDM. I doubt you even have fired one. Conversely, range aside, I would put a 5″-6″ PCC against just about any XDM out to 50 yards.. Heck.. Lets just go ahead and make the range fair for the XDM and make it 15 yards. Guess who loses? Well, of course the target loses! But, the PCC typically puts more rounds on target faster and more accurately than any traditional pistol. Give it a try. For those of you calling it junk. Let us know why yours is junk. Mine rocks. as do all of my PCCs. My guess is those that are calling it junk.. well, they probably don’t own one. I refer to these types as the keyboard gunners! I for one am happy with the direction Ruger is going! Thank you for the article and to all, happy shooting!

Your right. I own a bunch of guns and this pc charger takedown pistol, shoots longer better more control than any of my other pistols. Not only that i have a bipod with brace and 3x flip out zoom on my holosun red dot that i actually compete against people shooting rifles on a tactical range. This is literally a handgun and rifle combined that i shot a lot against other smgs etc, and 99% of them said they couldnt believe it, and after shooting it, they said its almost better than any of theres as far as how fast you can pullthe trigger without a beat, the weight, and that you can shoot pistol or rifle range and match the average shooting at your ranges regardless of the situtation. My 3x optic zoom makes the gun pinpoint at 75 ft within an inch and a half. Just before you doubt it like i did, try it.. first time i did, bought it on the spot, and a second one matter of fact. Best guns i ever own over my ak, moss, springfield, glock etc.. just try it….

Would be nicer if longer barrels were available. A 10″ would be nice.
