The S333 Volleyfire Thunderstruck Offers A Curtain of Protection In .22 WMR - MSRP: 9
With two .22 WMR barrels firing with each trigger pull, the Thunderstruck may be a reasonable self-defense weapon.

Standard Manufacturing’s latest marvel is finally available for purchase, starting July 11, 2019. It’s the S333 Volleyfire Thunderstruck double-barrel revolver and it’s intended for personal defense.

Standard Mfg. basis the design of this gun on the “Rule of Three.” When you’re confronted with a situation when you need to use a handgun for defense you’re most likely to be using it within 3 yards and you’ll have 3 seconds or less to shoot a maximum of three times. The S333 lets you fire eight rounds of .22 WIN MAG in less than 3 seconds.

Each pull of the two-finger trigger fires two rounds simultaneously from the 1.5″ barrels. It weighs just 18oz and they claim it’s an intuitive and safe gun.

The grip and trigger designs require two fingers on the trigger. It’s got a trigger safety and a transfer bar to keep it from firing unintentionally. It’s double-action-only.

Its unique design is…not ugly.

Also, there’s a firing pin for each barrel which should decrease the likelihood of the gun failing.

The revolver’s frame is machined from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum with a high-strength steel cylinder and barrel. The hammerless design and the long trigger guard keep it from snagging and help you grip it high.

The 7075-aluminum frame keeps the weight down.

Its unconventional double-barrels are an intriguing solution. A .22 bullet is regarded by some as a suitable defense round while others think the only thing it will stop is a tin can. .22 WIN MAG is markedly more powerful, but still very light. Launching two .22 WIN MAGs at once is an improved approach that keeps the recoil manageable for most shooters.

The trigger and grip design require two fingers on the trigger, which makes the pull feel lighter.

At just $369 MSRP, it’s certainly a manageable price for most shooters. Throw in the relatively inexpensive ammo, and it’s not a bad overall concealed carry package.

The barrels are 1.5″ long and each have independent firing pins.

Standard likes to suggest the idea that you can put birdshot in one barrel and a hollow point slug in the other to increase the likelihood of hitting the target. A representative for the company told me it’s like a cloud of projectiles heading toward the threat making a “curtain of protection” for the victim.

I handled the gun at SHOT Show 2019, and the sample was well-made. I’m intrigued to get my hands on one for a review.

If you stick it in his belly it’ll do some damage.if you use 50 grain jhps your throwing less than a 115 9mm at i would bet considerably less speed.
The muzzle blast will be considerably nasty. 22wmr is a round made for a rifle and not 1.5 inch revolvers.

  • Harry Hudson July 16, 2019, 9:56 pm

No one has mentioned it’s obvious “Fitz Special” trigger guard configuration in the comments yet. Someone wants you to pump all your bullets out likety split.

  • Bill Kaline July 14, 2019, 5:09 pm

Buy it while ye may, it’ll become a collector item one day…

  • Tuco Ramírez July 14, 2019, 10:38 am

I’ll stick with the Judge for a multi-projectile Revolver.

Sure, it’s bulkier/heavier, but a Judge Public Defender can put out twice the amount of lead per trigger pull, but with larger caliber projectiles and with more energy.

  • Scotty Gunn July 13, 2019, 11:38 am

A lot of people are missing the concept of this gun. The idea is to hit simultaneously with two rounds. Not “my 22 pistol holds 27 rounds so you can rapid fire”. It is well known that two rounds hitting at once induces shock faster than two separate rounds.
Great out of the box thinking. I will stick to larger calibers, but this is a good option for smaller petite women who can’t handle a .380 or 38 spl. A 22 magnum is better than nothing. Hornady makes a great round for this caliber now.

  • Mike July 13, 2019, 9:44 am

It is interesting, but I would only buy it if it was less expensive.

  • Krs July 13, 2019, 9:33 am

    Wtf ill pass,lol

  • Buckshott00 July 12, 2019, 5:37 pm

Cool your jets there Dumb-Dumbs. It’s a volley shot

“Next, we’ve seen this question pop up on social media: “Would the ATF consider the S333 a machine gun because of two shots with one trigger pull?”

The answer? No. We spoke directly with the good people at Standard Manufacturing, who said, “The S333 is not subjected to the NFA provision because it does not meet the ATF definition of a ‘machine gun.’ It is, however, defined as a ‘firearm’ of the ‘pistol’ type.””

    So relax keyboard experts.

    • RayJN October 27, 2019, 11:03 pm

What is to prevent the ATF from change its mind after many are sold?

  • James Sutton July 12, 2019, 3:16 pm

Bird shot for self defense? Sure, if your attacker is a bird, a very small bird.

  • ROBERT SAAD July 12, 2019, 3:04 pm

It looks to me, from the rear view of the barrels, that they are not exactly parallel but are slightly radiused, than converge at muzzle. The front view of barrels appear not to be rifled. Seems to me , that a gun with one trigger firing more than one shot per trigger pull, is in violation.POS

  • Lloyd Dumas July 12, 2019, 3:02 pm

Think I remember reading the same thing. If the barrel is that short hardly nothing is gained by using the magnum since all the extra powder is burned up is muzzle flash. I always loved the 22s but I would not buy this one, first of all it is just plain ugly, barrel is too short and I prefer a double single action. Got my attention at first but looking and reading I’ll pass on this one.

  • James Sutton July 12, 2019, 3:00 pm

While unique, this gun appears to be a solution in search of a problem. As a self defense weapon, the Thunderstruck is a fine conversation piece.

  • Steve July 12, 2019, 2:45 pm

As far as a .22mag only being 100fps faster than a lot I think you might high on something. We took my buddy’s .22mag rifle to the range last time and it almost went through a 1/4 inch steel target while my 10/22 didn’t even scratch the surface. But it looks like more for fun than self defense. I will keep my .40cal p94

  • Cymond July 12, 2019, 2:00 pm

Recoil is a factor for many people. It’s really not fair to compare a rimfire to a snubbie 357 Mag

  • srsquidizen July 12, 2019, 12:59 pm

Looks like 1 trigger with a trigger safety to me. Apparently it’s not a “machine gun” if both barrels are fired simultaneously because that counts as one “shot” under the legal definition. If they fired successively with 1 trigger pull (regardless of firing pins) it would be. Many legal ammo types launch multiple projectiles with just 1 trigger pull so sending them down more than 1 barrel is okay as long as it all happens at the same time. So this goofy gadget of a gun cannot actually fire “automatically” (dat’s what da gub’ment don’t want you havin’).

  • david mcguire July 12, 2019, 12:36 pm

I’m pretty sure the ATF would classify this as a machine gun. and you would think a gun manufacturer would understand ballistics the 22wmr for personal defense is most effectively loaded with solid point jacketed projectiles.

  • david mcguire July 12, 2019, 12:33 pm

Unless the ATF is made of major change in its definitions this thing qualifies as a machine gun that set fires more than one bullet per trigger pull. also the manufacturer suggestion of using both 22 birdshot and a hollow point shows that they don’t understand the ballistics of 22wmr the most effective loading would be two solid point projectiles

Plenty of good 9’s for that price that will do a better job. This thing looks like a bad dream, or a nightmare.

  • edward July 12, 2019, 12:02 pm

    too much money for that

  • Cymond July 12, 2019, 11:59 am

    A *curtain* of protection???
I think that deserves to win the award for Firearms Hyperbole of the Year.

I would consider buying one only as a novelty, and for that use, I’m prefer 22LR. Plus, I saw a review of the NAA mini revolvers where they did testing of both 22LR and 22WMR I’m the same gun. WMR had a small velocity boost, something like 100fps. I wish I could find that review again. Anyway, the point is that I’m sceptical that the WMR provides enough muzzle energy in such short barrels to justify using it instead of 22LR. Most of that extra powder just goes to making extra flash and blast. It’s been a while since I checked, but WMR is significantly more expensive, too. When I checked, WMR was comparable to 9mm, so that makes firing 2 shots with every trigger pull a bit pricey at range time. Again, another solid reason for LR.

  • Paul July 12, 2019, 11:39 am

If a larger company like Ruger or S&W would think outside the box they would make a handsome profit
    A L frame with 3 22lr in a row repeated 9 times to give you 27 shots
    You could load 9 – 27 shots
Low recoil but 3 22 cal. Hitting at one time with q possible 27 hits in 3 seconds would be a formidable self defense tool
Most people don’t realize the 22 cal is a perfect cal for old arthritic hands or someone that can’t handle the slide of a semi automatic
Cheap practice but 27 little frends coming to help when needed

  • John Rogers July 12, 2019, 11:30 am

This is something for the manufacturer and the BATF to hash out. But it is only a single trigger, with two finger indents in it.

I also agree with the comment about the sanity of a manufacturer recommending 22 shot shells for defensive use. “A curtain of protection”? Gimme a break.

Innovative design be damned, that thing is butt ugly. Of course, just that fact will make some folks want one. It is unique.

  • Bob B July 12, 2019, 10:57 am

People should not design guns while high on LSD. Looks like a piece of junk to me.

  • Dr Motown July 12, 2019, 10:54 am

Not a MG because it has two separate triggers with two separate firing pins

  • James L July 12, 2019, 10:38 am

Excellent,. Percsion made, Anthony puts quality into production. Made from solid block, no a cheap plastic mold. Under $400 for this handgun is fantastic. I have ordered two. I hope Standard can hold the price,. Order yours before the price increases because of foreign metal prices are sure to rise

  • Shawn July 12, 2019, 10:35 am

So, a 4-shot weapon taking up the same or bigger space than a 5-shot J-Frame is now a better idea for defense? The product and the commercial are clearly the amateurish work of “duffers.”

  • Evan July 12, 2019, 10:12 am

How is this not legally a machine gun? It fires two rounds per action of the trigger.

Also, this is an idiotic design. Just get a 9mm, .45, or .357 – you know, proven defensive firearms that actually work. This is just a gimmick.

  • Clyde Wason July 12, 2019, 9:43 am

Its a solution to a problem that doesnt exist.

  • Gus July 12, 2019, 9:42 am

Ya well that’s Standard manufacturing for you! That’s their idea of good deal. They wouldn’t know a good deal if it bit them on the ass. Be happy they are not charging you their special BS tax.

  • Mike July 12, 2019, 9:39 am

If you’re afraid to carry a gun… Don’t! It will just get taken from you in a scuffle.
Not sure how this is better than a j-Frame? 4 volleys of 2x .22 mag or 5 shots of 158 gr, 357 Gold Dot from my Model 60???… This is just a prop for people who know nothing about firearms.

  • Kurt T Hollyday July 12, 2019, 9:34 am

Grind off the middle finger on the TRIGGER, lighten up the trigger pull to around 5-6 lbs, and add a full trigger guard. That trigger looks like the equivalent of a “treble hook” if you were to carry it in your pocket.

  • Calisdad July 12, 2019, 9:27 am

You links led me to a 2017 article on the Standard S333 Volleyfire, A 6 shot, dual fire, pepperbox looking animal in .25ACP. Never make it into production? Any company suggesting the use of birdshot for self protection isn’t clear on the concept.

  • Mike in a Truck July 12, 2019, 9:23 am

I love all things 22 magnum! I cant help it. I’m a sucker for the 22 mag and also petite blonds. So shoot me. I’ll buy one for no other reason than to hold onto. It’ll probably go the way of the High Standard two shot . On the other hand this might be just the ticket for old B’rer Copperhead. Two shots of snake should settle his hash .

  • Harold Lang July 12, 2019, 9:13 am

How do I order this and pay for it money order check or credit card and can I get it ups

  • Gerald Cuvillier July 12, 2019, 9:04 am

The cylinder must be oblong to align the two barrels. I cannot figure how this is done with a circular cylinder. I agree with the other commenter about an over/under. It would be easier t align the barrels with the cylinder in that case.

  • Larry R Smith July 12, 2019, 9:04 am

Wild looking gun, but I’m confused about the msrp at the top it say $369 but standard website says $425.

  • Ken July 12, 2019, 8:25 am

I’m not a fan. I think it’s too different from a conventional handgun. For someone who shoots handguns and has developed a good grip and trigger control, being in the heat of the moment may cause some issues trying to remember to use two fingers and not being able to wrap the weak hand around in the same way. It would require a lot more training to become proficient under stress.

  • Chris Baker July 12, 2019, 8:24 am

I’m curious to see how well it shoots too. I wonder how close together the two bullets will hit the target. Is there any built in divergence or are the barrels perfectly (as much as can be) parallel?

When can I get one in .357 mag? Or in 44mag?

  • Dennis Holland July 12, 2019, 8:13 am

Where can we buy them, we are a FFL dealer

  • Chris July 12, 2019, 8:09 am

Everything about this gun says snag. Sorry, I’ll stick with my Glock 22.

  • MAS July 12, 2019, 7:58 am

I’m a fan of 22WMR and own many firearms chambered in it. 22WMR ammo is more expensive than 9mm though, so no savings there. I do love the outside the norm thinking on this gun.

Damn, I love it when people think outside of the box and come up with these things! Ingenuity is great!

  • Kolt1911 July 12, 2019, 7:05 am

The AC/DC video is a nice touch, made my morning. Still on the fence about the S333. Very unusual.

  • Eric Mickley July 12, 2019, 6:58 am

They could double the capacity of this firearm if they made it an over-under instead of a side by side. It would of course require a complete re engineering of the firearm. No reason a regular 22 revolver could not be made this way, as there is plenty of space on the cylinder face underneath each chambered 22 round.

  • Singleshotcajun July 12, 2019, 5:49 am
  • MB July 12, 2019, 5:30 am

“Each pull of the two-finger trigger fires two rounds simultaneously ” More than 1 round with single trigger pull, think is’s a machine gun,,,, The binary triggers for AR’s fire one when pulled, the next one on release of trigger. Not the same thing….just saying…
