New from the minds at Savage Arms is the ReneGauge shotgun. According to Savage’s Patrick Kelley, one of the gun’s designers, the ReneGauge gives shooters the best of all worlds when it comes to shotgun design. At first glance, we would agree.
“We’ve been working on the design for about four years,” Kelley said. “We are super happy with how it turned out. This gun has a ton of value shooters will appreciate.”

The over-sized controls caught our eye from the get-go. The charging handle and bolt release are large and will boost ease-of-use. Full-fluting on the Melonite Finish barrel provides a 9 percent weight reduction and gives the gun a racy appeal. The carbon-steel rib is laser welded to the barrel and is fitted with a bright red fiber-optic front sight that should perform well in all lighting conditions.

Ready for the woods or the competition trail, the ReneGauge boasts a clutter-free magazine loading port, and the slim, narrow forearm was designed to be ergonomic and aid in pointability. Adding strength and promising easy assembly and disassembly is the one-piece lightweight bolt carrier.
Designed with adjustability in mind, the ReneGauge’s stock allows for full customization of comb height and length of pull. Included with each shotgun are three recoil pads as well as a trio of comb-height inserts. In addition, a shim kit is included to further adjust drop and cast.
Ensuring shooters will have reliable operation from heavy-duty 3-inch loads all the way down to low-brass 2 3/4-inch shotshells, the ReneGauge is fitted with Savage’s D.R.I.V. (Dual Regulating Inline Valve Gas System), a gas-driven system that allows high-power and low-power loads to cycle with the same consistency.
The ReneGauge is offered in Field, Waterfowl and Turkey models. MSRP starts at $1,495, and the gun will be available in late March.

I wish Savage would bring back the model 99.
From the video (unfortunately no cutaway model to verify 100%) this looks like a copy of a Remington v3 or versamax. But it doesnt come in 3 1/2″ chamber! Wtf! Trying to compete with the big “B” brands, but it doesn’t cycle the heaviest rounds like the others do… why not? Personally as an avid waterfowl hunter I really want the option and ABILITY to shoot ANY 12ga round available. From 2 3/4″ light dove target loads, to 3 1/2″ honker slayers. In my Remington Versamax I CAN DO THAT. And the heavy 3 1/2’s feels like 20ga recoil thanks to the dual gas port/piston regulator system like the one described in the video. So… for $1,495+tax you can get a gun that ALMOST does what the others do but with 1/2″ less shell capacity. Now with the opinions aside, I understand there’s folks out there who do not shoot anything bigger than 3″ and that’s ok. I own many shotguns from .410 to 12ga with everything in between. They all have a purpose, and they all get use (some more than others) but the simple fact is this. For $1,500! A shotgun that’s suppose to “do all” should “cycle all” with that kind of money you can find a shotgun with an oversized bolt handle, smooth loading port, and a 3 1/2″ chamber! Back to the drawing board savage.
