One gun you may not have heard about during SHOT Show 2016 is Serbu Firearms’ newest, the RN-50. Keeping with tradition Serbu’s new offering is chambered for .50 BMG and is just as unique as their other contributions to the firearms market.

Based in Tampa, Florida, Serbu Firearms has been a staple provider of unconventional and unusual firearms for years and are well-known for their uncomplicated and affordable .50-caliber rifles for people who want to get into long-range target shooting on a budget. Their latest .50-cal. takes simple and affordable to a new level.

The action is little more than a breech cap that screws into place.

The RN-50 was actually designed as a collaborative effort between Mark Serbu and YouTube sensation Royal Nonesuch — putting the RN in RN-50. The new .50-caliber rifle was built to hit the $1000 price point — something that no company has ever done before for a production rifle.

The gun employs a straightforward break-action design, with a screw-on breech block. Having to unscrew the breech block for each shot makes the rifle a bit slow to reload, but the simple loading and firing system is what makes the gun so inexpensive. At this price, a lot of people will accept the trade-off that the shooter has to manually load each round before firing, and manually extract and unload the gun after firing.

The video shows that unloading is still pretty easy to do by using the case rim of another cartridge as a tool for extraction, and that with a little practice, shouldn’t be too hard to get used to. And if the cases start to get too hot, there’s another inexpensive tool that can help: a glove.

[one_half]

The hammer is exposed, too. Kind of like the hammers on some revolvers combined with the caps om the breech of a muzzle loader, with the kick of a government mule.

The exposed hammer is manually cocked to fire.

The break should help mitigate some of the intense recoil.

Due to the simple design it’s functionally a takedown rifle, and can broken in half at the hinge to make it easier to transport. The gun will ship without a buttstock, instead, it has buffer tube mount installed that accepts standard AR stocks. Other optional upgrades include a set trigger and a bipod in addition to the stock.

For a short time the gun will be offered at the introductory price of $875. You will have to act fast as the MSRP is going up to $1,199 on February 19. Even at the higher price point, this is an interesting new product from the folks at Serbu Firearms and it is definitely the least expensive way to get into shooting .50 BMG.

Specifications:

  • Caliber: .50 BMG, .50 DTC for restricted markets. Other cartridges possible with barrel change
  • Barrel: 29.5 inches, alloy steel with 1-in-15 button rifling
  • Chassis: heat-treated steel and aluminum construction
  • Finish: manganese phosphate and hard anodized
  • Action: modified break action with threaded breech
  • Weight: 17 pounds
  • MSRP: $1,199, introductory price, $875

The heat sheild should let you grab the gun and run, if you need to. But it will take some time to reload.

Meh… if I was in the market for a single shot .50bmg, I’d probably go with the Noreen ULR-50. http://onlylongrange.com/ulr/ It costs $2K, but if you can’t afford that, then you have no business trying to shoot .50bmg as a hobby. People who have to scrimp and save to come up with $875… plus tax, shipping and other fees, haven’t considered the cost of .50bmg ammo. Stick to what you can afford. Just sayin’…

    • poohead December 8, 2016, 3:49 am

yo, .50 is friggin cheap to reload, and cheap to shoot in general. you can buy loaded ammo for around 3 a round, and can load it for around 2.

.300 rum, .338 rum, .338 lapua, .375 h&h are all much more expensive to buy ammo for because there isnt any milsurp, and loading still costs right around 1.50.

the rifle itself is the most expensive part and at 1100, which is about the same as the other calibers i provided, give or take 200 dollars.

Almost forgot. I will be lmao when this thing actually is more accurate then y’alls precious 10,000$ Barrett. Keep it simple stupid makes for more accurate rifles. It’s all in the barrel, action, and shooter not the price 😉

  • Novice February 14, 2016, 9:00 pm

O yeah I already have my name on the list just the fact that you can’t touch the barrel for that makes it worth it. Duh

  • Novice February 14, 2016, 8:55 pm

Sure looks to me like a bunch of crying mama’s boys that probably couldn’t handle the fact they paid so much just to do what the RN50 can do for cheaper

  • Magic Rooster February 6, 2016, 2:01 pm

I have no desire for this or any other 50 cal, wait …oh yeah a “Ma Deuce” I’ll take. Those of you who scoff at the price, why not build one and market it? There is a lot more to manufacturing a gun besides a few pieces of bar stock steel. How about a factory, paying wages, and don’t forget the insurance and the pesky licensing thing. Innovation and “brains” carries a price tag like it or not. If you don’t want it , don’t buy it.

  • Brad February 4, 2016, 7:19 am

For $1000 I’ll buy the Safety Harbour .50 bolt action upper for the AR15 lower.

  • Political Warrior February 3, 2016, 7:58 pm

I am a certified Machinist Craftsman and know all of the rudiments of machining metals and the metallurgical values of same.
There is ‘Absolutely No Way’ this simple design criteria should ever cost what these greedy people are selling it for.
I have built guns using Douglas or Star Barrels and Bishop stocks etc. in the past and even then, it was not near as expensive as outlined here.
It is no more than the dog-leg action of a Single Barrel Shotgun, With a ‘PIPE CAP’ for a Cap to lock the cartridge in.
This gun should not sell for a penny over $500.00 and that would be high!”
The design is simple and is O.K. but when they try to shove it out at $1,000.00+; “IT IS TOO DAMNED MUCH!”

    • Non- Political warrior February 3, 2016, 9:54 pm

      Interesting statement political guy:

OK if it should only cost 500 why don’t you build a bunch and sell them at 500? You would surely have lots of buyers!

When I worked for the military there was kinda of saying, Don’t criticize something unless you have a way to improve on it.
So many criticize but can they do it better/cheaper? Most definitely cannot. Would I like a cheaper one, definitely but I doubt you will ever see one cheaper than that in this day and age.

    • Ryan Chamberlin February 3, 2016, 11:55 pm

      Amen!

    • atilla the hun February 4, 2016, 12:48 pm

Should sell for $300 and they should be happy with the $100 profit. The idiot buyer should pray that the pipe cap will hold.

    • Charles January 14, 2017, 11:46 pm

If you can build them for 500 give or take 50 I’ll buy several and have friends that will as well

    • Roady February 9, 2017, 11:36 am

      I agree w/ PW; but I would pick a new handle-PW???
Anyway- your right on. Very few care about value-giving customers what they pay for. Most businesses are “all I can grab!” It’s like those vultures who took advantage of the sandy hook shooting to gouge the hell out of us gunmen. I have had to shoot up my stash of .22 that I had for 30 years.
The problem is there are too many non-gun people in the gun business. Why don’t you cut-throats get government jobs?

  • hog February 3, 2016, 6:59 pm

Serbu is a great company with great values. When a law enforcement.agency in NY wanted to test his .50 and possibly buy, Mark Serbu said no, he would not sell them a rifle that citizens couldnt buy. This rifle is an amazing opportunity for someone to enjoy 50BMG shooting for those on a budget. If this is comparable to the BFG-50 it will be an MOA rifle. If you have cash or don’t like the loading of this rifle, spend a little more and get the bolt rifle, or just be a high roller and buy the Serbu semi-auto 50! All these negative comments are pretty ignorant. Thank you for a great product Mark Serbu!!!!!!!!!

    • Rick Hammill February 9, 2017, 6:19 am

Great product and great price! All the negativity sounds like it’s that time of the month for some people.

  • Scooter February 3, 2016, 6:50 pm

Ever see someone shoot a howitzer? This is no slower than that. And probably the closest we will ever get in firepower.

  • George February 3, 2016, 6:44 pm

Spelling Nazi Alert: the word is BREECH not breach. A BREECH is the part of a firearm behind the bore whereas a breach can be many other things but part of a firearm isn’t one of them.

To the gun? WTF? Ugly, slow and expensive for what it is. There are more than enough sub $2K .50 cal uppers that work better than this. Solution in search of a problem unless you have just HAVE to own a .50 cal of some description.

  • bb lynn February 3, 2016, 5:14 pm

Mark Serbu is moving backwards on this gun, it may be cheaper than a bfg-50 but it’s still moving backwards

  • Rogue February 3, 2016, 4:10 pm

Wow, all the negativity. I would seriously consider one at 875. Cheapest 50’s I’ve seen are around 7500. Would be a blast at the local range! Though I suspect they might frown on taking it into an indoor range. The slow reloading part might be a blessing at the price of the rounds and would reduce the change of overheating. I don’t see them dropping in price much assuming they are at least semi-accurate and hold up to the blast of the 50.

  • Archangel February 3, 2016, 1:48 pm

Read more at: http://www.serbu.com/ they say?
It’s a dead link, and serbu.com does not even mention it!
And what is with that stupid link to that stupid royal-none-such channel?

  • Dixie February 3, 2016, 1:39 pm

I have to wonder how long those welds for the scope rail/bridge/cheesylookingbox are going to hold up. The .50 BMG round would create a LOT of shock through the whole weapon in this setup.

    • atilla the hun February 4, 2016, 1:04 pm

The scope will go first, on that tub, with a tube cap.

  • Rrudytoo February 3, 2016, 12:37 pm

Yes, the threaded cap does slow things down but it also makes for less moving parts and weight. Hopefully, the fit of the upper and lower receivers is good and snug.

I would be interested in knowing the accuracy of this weapon at various distances.

    Semper Fi!

    • CTDesigns December 24, 2016, 1:08 pm

I was also wondering what the accuracy of this weapon is and what the MOA is?

      Semper Fi!

  • Russ Vance February 3, 2016, 11:45 am

It looks like an answer in search of a question to me…and a HUGE profit margin even at $875. Nope, don’t need or want it.

  • Frederick February 3, 2016, 11:30 am

No matter how you look at it, it is a very expensive toy. By the time you put the stock, bipod and scope you are going to have some big bucks invested. Then add the price of ammo! Then have president billary take it away……..

    • Archangel February 3, 2016, 1:50 pm

      Take away what?
It is not the serialized part so an 80% lower makes it a ghost, so Billary can go fuck her self.

      • undeRGRound12x8 February 3, 2016, 6:03 pm

        Great Comment!
If we get HITLERY,we may need to “Water the Tree” so to speak.
She will prolly TRY and seize weapons. Teh BIG FAIL!!!

  • silverbullet February 3, 2016, 11:09 am

Seems like a come on price,if they can sell for $875 till feb 19th , they should sell at that price for at least a year ?. They try to bait us buyers then there out of stock to raise the price!!! All the gun sellers do it. Allways have and do. About 35 years ago Ruger came out with the red hawk stainless 44 mag pistol. I ordered one at a gun dealer and I’m still waiting never heard a word on it . The reason they never called was the price I ordered at jumped to almost double . Because supply and demand came in . Ever since that time I don’t even try to by new introduced guns . Same thing happened when I tried to order a 30 pm pistol 5 years ago it’s still hard to find one now. It’s all bait to suck you in . yupp

  • Lobo February 3, 2016, 9:07 am

I just went to the website for Serbu, and they have this listed for $2395.00, ????

    • Leonard February 3, 2016, 10:50 am

Don’t worry–you’ll see lots of them for sale CHEAP at the next gun show from guys who fired it once…

    • Brett February 3, 2016, 8:01 pm

The $2395 is his bolt action one.

    • Edgy Q February 3, 2016, 8:13 pm

I could not find the rifle on the SERBU web site .. there are two rifles but are not the ones this article is talking about ..
      What’s up with that ?

    • Jr February 5, 2016, 11:10 am

Not the same gun. The $2395 is for his BFG -50, that is bolt action.

  • Michael Foushi February 3, 2016, 8:08 am

It appears they are not selling these yet? This article seems a little misinformed.

    • Brett February 3, 2016, 8:02 pm

      Preorders now via phone.

  • GREGORY MATATALL February 3, 2016, 7:45 am

HOW DO I GO ABOUT ORDERING ONE AND APPROXIMATELY HOW MUCH IS THE BEST RECOMMEND AMMUNITION FOR THIS RIFLE COST ?

  • Steve K February 3, 2016, 7:34 am

At the Serbu site the MSRP is $2,400. What do you get for $875?

    • Tony February 3, 2016, 9:09 am

You are looking at the wrong rifle. The one in the article is the RN-50

  • srsquidizen February 3, 2016, 7:25 am

The “Saturday Night Special” of long-range sniper rifles? This thing is bound to end up on President Hilary’s hit list. If you want one better get it soon along with something to bury it in.

  • Thomas February 3, 2016, 6:39 am

Where do I get one now? Please let me know thx

  • DanGoodShot February 3, 2016, 5:55 am

875 sure. 1200 nope. Might as well save a few more beans for a single shot bolt action and not have to deal with that threaded thing. Kinda looks like a pipe with an end cap… Wait, it is just a pipe with an end cap. Like I said, 875 or even 900, sure any higher, save for a single shot bolt.

    • bison1913 February 3, 2016, 7:55 am

As an entry level single shot .50 caliber it’s not bad… only because of the introductory price. However, as the price creeps up, I would save my extra pennies and invest in a single shot bolt action instead. Now, at the top end price if it included the scope and butt stock, it may just be an excellent cost effective purchase. This kind of reminds me something I built out of PVC many years ago to fire soda cans out of. Single shot, screw end cap and fire away.

      • Chief February 3, 2016, 10:29 am

Yeah ,$2300 is wayyyyyyyyy to high for a barrel with a threaded cap .If you cant get one for $875 I would upscale.I used to shoot .50 cal when rounds were a buck fifty a piece ,the good old days.
