Buoyed by Strong Gun Sales, Sportsman’s Warehouse Reports Another Great Quarter

The firearms community appreciates loyalty, and they’ve shown that appreciation at Sportsman’s Warehouse stores across the country.

Chief Executive Officer John Barker told investors Thursday that gun sales jumped 8.3 percent in the second quarter, helping boost overall semiannual sales to $383.3 million, a double-digit increase over 2017.

“Our continued outperformance of the industry and market share gains are attributed to our continued investments in assortment expansion, online capabilities and expertise for varying subcategories and all user types as we continue to capitalize on market share opportunities,” Barker said Thursday.

“Market share opportunities” likely alludes to the recent decision by Dick’s Sporting Goods to halt the sale of AR-15s and 30-round magazines and to stop selling firearms to anyone under age 21. Sportsman’s Warehouse has seen a marked uptick in gun sales since Dick’s CEO Edward Stack made his announcement, despite a slowdown in firearms sales across the country.

“There is clearly a combination of pull forward that happened in quarter one and market share gains,” Kevan Talbot, the retailer’s chief financial officer, told investors in May. “We can see it in specific regions where we compete against some of the competitors who have made changes. We’re hearing it from our customers on a daily basis.”

Strong firearm sales were enough to buoy the company’s overall sales this quarter. Even though non-hunting categories dropped 0.01%, net sales for the second quarter of fiscal year 2018 increased 6.2% to $203.3 million from $191.5 million in the second quarter of 2017.

At that time, the company blamed “softness in firearm demand” for disappointing sales numbers. Yesterday, they attributed their strong second quarter to gun buyers.

“We are picking up market share as we continue to focus on doing what we do correct,” Talbot noted. “And obviously, our competitors have made certain decisions that are impacting that. But our customers have realized that we continue to do it very well, as far as the sale of firearms, moving forward. And I think that’s a testament to one of our strengths.”

Barker said in March he has no plans to change the company’s pro-2A policy, and thus far he’s been true to his word.

“As far as a Sportsman’s Warehouse changing their policies around regulated materials, we are continuing to monitor the situation and have ongoing conversations to make sure we understand what’s happening in the political arena and regulation,” Barker said. “But we continue to support the lawful sale of firearms under the Second Amendment rights of our customer and at this point we have no intent or plan to change the way that we approach that.”

I hardly think Bass Pro Shops of Cabelas are anti 2A.

Unfortunately I don’t have a Sportsman’s Warehouse anywhere near me, but they’re online and I can purchase from them that way.
Since they’re not Dick’s I have no problem spending my money with them.

I feel that shopping at any store that supports Liberalism and their insane gun control view, is aiding their agenda. I have not set foot into Dick’s and never will. I like Sportman’s Warehouse and Cabelas a lot. I have bought my last two guns from these two stores, as well as all other hunting goods.

You are right. But, it’s not just the stores. It’s the credit card providers and the insurance companies that speak for their clientele. That’s where the political power really is. And, they have done it using David Hogg as their poster child.

Bass Pro and Cabela’s fired Bank of America and changed their credit provider to Capital One BECAUSE of support of the 2nd Amendment. You need to update your list a bit. If it wouldn’t create a martyr, I think some folks would go Hogg hunting. Instead, we need him to get into a debate with someone from the NRA or a 2nd Amendment association spokesman who can stay clam and fry him with pure facts from FBI and unbiased, VERIFIABLE statistics. Maybe that would shut him up. I would also like to see if he still remembers the names / faces of the students from his school that were shot. I’m guessing he would fail that test.

The stupidity and buffoonery of dicks is so great why would any freedom loving person ever shop there. I refuse to give Dicks a cent of my money. It was the same with Sports authority after sandy hook. sposrtsmans warehouse has and will always get my local business. Hopefully they don’t make the same mistakes the other boons do.

    • Luke September 1, 2018, 9:13 pm

      Sports Authority is gone, yes?

  • john saunders August 31, 2018, 10:30 am

    No MORE DICKS!

  • Altoids August 31, 2018, 9:01 am

It’ll be my pleasure to see a “Dick’s Sporting Goods” sign replaced with a large banner that reads “Available” for the same business space.

    I’ve never shopped at Dick’s. I never will. Sportsman’s Warehouse, however….

  • joefoam August 31, 2018, 8:45 am

Taking the AR-15 platform rifles off the shelf and destroying them was one thing, hiring anti gun lobbyists was the last straw for me at Dicks. Hope the sjw board there enjoys explaining the loss in sales to the shareholders. Meanwhile good for Sportsmans Warehouse. Their store is closer to me than Dicks anyway.

I have not put my foot in a Dick’s sporting goods store since its management cowardly surrendered to the anti-firearms, leftist hysteria. Support those who support you. Turn your back on those who support the anti-freedom Left.
