3 Gun Competition STAG 3G AR-15

Authors Paul Helinski Rifles
The Facebook contest is over, but the STAG 3G is available at your local STAG Arms dealer, and you can find Hornady Steel Match at many gun dealers and big box sporting good stores, like Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas.
Click for a bigger version of this photo. The STAG Arms 3G is a very impressive gun, second only to its elegant design and options. It is shown here with one rail installed in the forend with a front grip, and the scope is a Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x.
Ben Becker, our resident US Army Sniper, shot this gun at length on several occasions and it is a solid one inch gun.
Though we did try other ammo, most of our tests were done with Hornady Steel Match. This sub MOA group in the Florida rain is a standard example.
The 3G is two inches longer than a standard M4 STAG like this Model 1. The big difference is that it uses a rifle and not a carbine gas system, making the gun more controlable and softer overall.
STAG makes one of the few .22 conversion kits that actually works and it is a natural match to the 3G for practice and walking through stages. It comes in both right and left handed versions, just like the STAG rifles.
The 15″ Samson forward handguard is comfortable and removes with two Allen screws, not a special wrench.
The gun comes with three rail mounts that screw right onto the Samson handguard. They can be used for forward vertical grips and other accessories.
The buttstock and hand grip are made by Magpull. They are very good choices.
What I found the most impressive were consistent 15-20 shot groups into less than 2″ at 100 yards. An accurate cold gun is one thing. An accurate hot gun is a whole other level.
This is the one 200 yard target we were able to shoot in the rain before they sent us packing. All but the flyer were into 2.” The Nikon 223 dialed right in from 100 to 200 yards as advertised, even with an 18″ barrel, not the 24″ that ammo is tested at for the 3240fps. velocity. It was really great.
The flash hider/muzzle break on the STAG is a new design I haven’t seen. It seems to work great.

Zombies may not be taking over America yet, but in the world of shooting sports, 3-Gun competitions for sure already are. You can’t talk about shooting these days without hearing about the popularity of 3-Gun. STAG Arms, a sponsor of the TV show 3-Gun Nation, hopes to capture the rifle part of the 3 Gun market with a new rifle created specifically for competition in 3-Gun events. It is called the STAG Arms 3G, MSRP $1,495. All of the competitors in the finals of 3-Gun Nation this year, being held in Las Vegas next week, will be shooting the STAG Arms 3G, and I am pretty sure all of the competitors are going to ask to keep them or buy them after the event. It is a really nice gun.

The 3G is an 18″ barreled AR-15 with about all the bells and whistles you could want for 3-Gun and a lot more. It comes standard with a 15″ Sampson free floating handguard, a Magpull ACS stock and MOE handgrip, and a Geissele Super 3-Gun trigger created specifically for 3-Gun competition. The gas system is the full rifle length version, not the shorter M4 version. This makes for a lot less felt recoil and very smooth control-ability shot to shot. STAG also makes one of the few reliable .22 conversion kits for the AR, and it works flawlessly in this new 3G.

I guess the question is, how many people would buy a dedicated gun for 3-Gun? The STAG 3G would answer that question,” it doesn’t matter. ” The 3G is a formidable battle rifle with almost perfect balance. The twist on the gun is 1 in 8,” which is capable of stabilizing a wide range of bullet types, and the 18″ barrel turns a corner as fast as a 16″ M4, but with a better gas system and more velocity. You also couldn’t ask for a better stock and hand filling grip than the Magpull product. STAG really didn’t skimp on this rifle and they made some important add-on choices that you may not have gotten as right forced to make the choices yourself.

I personally find quad rails annoying, even with too-fat rail covers. This smart Samson handguard comes with 3 short rail sections to mount whatever you like on the gun. It makes for a comfortable, hand sized forward grip and the flexibility to add what you want. You can see from the pictures I like the stumpy UTG/Leapers forward vertical grip, and I was able to mount this in less than five minutes. What I like about it most is that you don’t need a special AR wrench to take the handguard off. It utilizes a collar and two Allen screws, and slides off with little or no effort. For ease of use the Samson wins hands down.

I can’t say I understand the difference between a single stage and a two stage AR trigger because I haven’t messed around with them that much. This Geissele trigger is supposed to be a “hybrid” pull, durable enough for heavy use yet light and controllable for long shots. In my test rifle the trigger broke at 3.5 to 4 pounds, and is snappy and sure. There is no play in the front of the pull at all, not even a wiggle, and less than 1/8″ of travel before it breaks. A 4 pound trigger may be considered a little too light in a traditional battle rifle, but battle rifles have historically been made to carry safety-off, and they are made for the lowest common denominator in safety and shooting ability. If you train on this 3G and get to know it, I don’t feel the 4 pound trigger is too light for a self defense/combat situation, yet it is light and sure enough to take a delicate long aimed shot. The safety is also snappy and sure on these STAGs.

The flashhider/muzzle break is an interesting animal. I haven’t seen it on another rifle, even a STAG. It has top ports and front ports, and breaching fins. I haven’t seen a 3-Gun stage with door breaching, so I’ll assume this is part of the multi-purpose aspect of the rifle. I have yet to find a reliable method for measuring the effectiveness of a flash hider or muzzle break, but the 18″ barrel is also going to help with muzzle flash. More powder burning inside the barrel means less powder burning outside the barrel, which is what causes muzzle flash. Shooting the gun in daylight produces no flash at all that would handicap you, and the recoil shot to shot is completely manageable.

For accuracy, we measured a consistent 1″ or less 5 shot group with the 3G at 100 yards. But even more important, it was easy to keep 10 or 15 shots within 2.” You are going to be shooting a hot gun in a 3-Gun competition. A rifle that can make an inch cold-rifle isn’t as important as one that doesn’t fluxuate when the gun has just emptied three mags. We were also able to shoot this gun briefly at 200 yards. You’ll see from the wet targets that we hit a stormy afternoon at Manatee Gun Range, and they called the range cold right after we got the one group off that you see here.

Outside of a flyer that was probably a raindrop shot, the 1 MOA held out to 200. Nice also was that we were using a Nikon 223 scope, and we dialed that in after shooting at 100 just putting the scope on the 200 mark. The 18″ barrel in the 3G is close enough to the 24″ used in ammo testing at the prescribed 3240 fps. that the 223 series relies upon.

The 3G is available with Dueck Defense Rapid Transition Sights (RTS) which are offset iron sights that are used for close in shots. Other than looking cool because you turn your rifle on its side to shoot, gangsta style, I don’t see a lot of value in them. We shot this gun a lot, with both the NIkon 223 1-4 and the new Hi-Lux 1-4 called the CMR. The 1 power is an eyes open walking sight picture, and the Hi-Lux even has an illuminated half circle in the middle, like a red dot, but green. If you set yourself to remember to turn your power up during your transition movement for a long shot stage(aka walking or running between stage shoot stations), there is no advantage to turning your rifle sideways.

I suppose if you have a stage in 3-Gun where you take close shots then an immediate far shot, the sideways sights might be superior. But even at 200 yards, on the Hi-Lux especially, a good scope on 1 power is sufficient, and you don’t have to change your sight picture to turn the rifle on its side.

There are few rifles I have ever removed from the box and said to myself, “what else do you need?” This STAG Arms 3G was one of them. STAG is one of the largest makers of AR receivers in the country and supplies many of the other brands you know. They also are the only maker of left handed ARs, and this 3G does also come in a lefty version. STAG knows ARs, and this 3G is a truly tasteful and smart gun.

I already used STAG ARs for much of my product testing as you may have noticed from some of the AR stuff we’ve done. They are great guns. I can’t say whether I will ever find my way into 3-Gun competition. There isn’t much going on down here in South Florida. But if all my neighbors turn into zombies or the black helicopters land to take me to the FEMA camp, this 3G is most likely the gun I will go down holding. I’m keeping mine.

i believe no flash supressor of any kind is legal in calif. can you get the 3g compensated only or with a clean unthreaded bbl?

  • baddog October 30, 2012, 5:15 pm

Has anybody installed a 15″ Samson rail on a Stag M3? If so, were you able to use the stock gas block? Are there any how-to videos on how to do this modification? Thanks…

My brother got a 3G for Christmas and I am about to trade one of my AR’s for a 3G. This thing runs like a sewing machine…dead flat, no recoil and the Gieselle trigger is tidy and neat (no it’s not too light; see Col Cooper’s 3rd rule: Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target). I actually shot low on my first grouping at speed, because I was used to controlling the front of the rifle more on my AR. When I used this technique on the 3G, I was overcompensating and pulling low. The 3G is so flat, you can just lay it on your open palm and tickle the bang switch. I shot a 4 target set at 20 yards in 3.5 seconds on the move and the groupings were all within 3 inches…that’s shooting as fast as I can. I’m no world champ or master level shooter, but in my book, this is a fantastic rifle, and will be the next resident of my gun safe.

Does the 3G use a piston system?

    • Administrator March 22, 2012, 2:03 pm

It is a conventional AR. Dont believe what you read about AR systems lol the 3G will serve you better than most.

  • Cheeseburger in Paradise March 16, 2012, 11:06 am

I got one for Christmas (I really love my wife!) and I entered my first action rifle match with my 3 GL this past Saturday. Here are some thoughts; weighing in at around 9 lbs unloaded, this is no flyswitch. Having carried M-16/M-4s for 24 years, I was surprised by the forward weight of the gun, that big stainless barrell is very heavy. Out of the box, it seemed unbalanced; however, once the buzzer went off all that changed. The muzzle doesnt move, getting back on target is amazingly easy. It is also a very accurate weapon–far more accurate than I can shoot it, but it make a big difference shooting steel at 250 yards or bowling pins at 75. I felt I could attempt offhand shots rather than take a second or two longer and mover to a supported position.
I was very nervous about the trigger at first–after 11 lbs of pull on my -16 for so long, the Gisele trigger felt scary light, and I did a lot of range time getting used to it before I felt comfortable enough for a match. It breaks quick, clean and easy, and I focused a lot on making sure my finger was out of the trigger when I was moving.
The stock is very comfortable to shoot, adjusts quickly to different positions and stays there.
I also didnt like the extended forearm grip at first, but I quickly realised the value of it when you are moving thru different shooting positions. It also stays very cool, even on long round count stages.
The gun performed flawlessly (the operator–not so much, but that is what practice is for) and I felt very confident by the end of the match. I think this is a great all around rifle, and by the end of the match was feeling really good in my hands.
It worked best for me with 75gr HPBT. Either the Hornadays or the Prvi’s shot equal size groups– under an inch on a rest and 1.5-2 inches supported.

What I don’t understand is why do so many think it would “look good in my gun safe”. If the door is closed how is it going to look good? Slung on a single point sling at the range, now thats looking good.Have been waiting for my order to be filled for the last 5 weeks, someday soon I hope.

  • Merv Buercker January 6, 2012, 3:31 pm

I would have to say that this is one of the nicest if not the nicest AR15 I have ever seen I was in the process of bidding for one when I saw your E-mail. Lets see if I can break down some of the wonderful things I see on your AR15. Lets start with the its elegant design and options. It two inches longer and that fact that it uses a rifle and not a carbine gas system, making it more controlable. But in my option the most impressive thing about the new AR15 is the flash hider-muzzle break on the stag I have never seen anything like this before on any tact weapon that was on the market for the general public. The oly time I have ever seen this before was on my Uncle’s 308 he was a sniper for SWAT and his weapon ran him well over $10,000.00. I can’t wait to get one of these in my hand I think it should bring back some very good memories that my uncle & I shared.

Facebook whether you like it or not is a very widely viewed website every second of everyday. Everyone who has a FB account and likes Stag puts information out there about the company. I know some people don’t like or use FB but it is a very good resource to use for getting your name in front of people. I think it’s a very genious marketing technique.

I have to say that I have one of you firearms now, I just got it a few week ago, and have not fired it yet. I shoot evey-week, and I am a member of the Proactive Defense gun club which I joined a few months ago. I am now in defense training, and I have my concealed Weapons permit which I got a few months ago. I plan on firing and sighting in my AR this up coming week, and get ready to go “pig” hunting here in Texas. This is a left-handed weapon, I also fire .308, 7.62×39, .357, .40, .45, .40 sw, and 9 mm M&P.

Is the STAG 3G AR-15 legal in California?

    • Berny November 17, 2011, 1:39 pm

      Charles,
Nothing is legal in Calif. If your are going to shoot with it like at a range your mag cannot more than 10. If hunting not more than 3. Go figure. For protection they don’t build a magazine big enough for me.

I would love to participate, but I’m into guns and hunting – not facebook
    You should reconsider your market.
The kids that play on facebook are kid that can’t afford to go out and live life so they just talk about it.
The people who buy firearms and ammo are be a little older and a little less intrested in facebook.
    I guess I miss out,

  • Kenneth Janzen November 14, 2011, 7:08 pm

This would be a great addition for anyone to have.

  • Bryan Ford November 14, 2011, 6:33 pm

I would love to have your rifle in my hands . Your rifle would make a great addition to my Home or Office. This rifle would make my co worker’s drull. Since my department is always trying new things and never following up on the new things. This would make it much harder to turned us down for new equipment after seeing your rifle next to me in the roll call room. And your rifle ready to go out in the world to help stop the bad guys.

  • Ralph L. Longmire November 14, 2011, 3:21 pm

    I need this for Christmas!

  • Jess Dixon November 14, 2011, 3:00 pm

I have had my Calif. Conceal Carry License for about 8 years. Am a Veteran. Have several hand guns, but am looking for a rifle. Is there a concensus of opinion regarding such a weapon to own with no interest in competetivive shooting?
Am interested in in reading more about this rifle, so will be joining you on Facebook.

    Thanks,
    Jess

too complicated. Just do a damn drawing! I know I won’t run through the hurdles. I don’t care enough about winning that 1 gun. And T-shirts, I have enough of T-Shirts.

    • Administrator November 14, 2011, 1:34 pm

Well maybe its time to retire a few and get a STAG tshirt so you can be cooler than your friends.

  • Karl November 14, 2011, 12:39 pm

  • duckslayer66 November 14, 2011, 10:25 am

    I do not use facebook.

  • Michael Rodri November 14, 2011, 9:56 am

I am not a big computer guy,but I believe I’m forward thinking enough to realize that the next generation of shooters will be the front line against those who would disarm us as individuals and as a nation.I applaud you for your use of facebook and any other cutting edge method of communication that you may come up with.I am not a face subscriber.

  • Tom November 14, 2011, 9:52 am

Neither of these steps are absolutely required as the required codes will be posted to the public Facebook wall of STAG Arms throughout the week.

Since you’re so mature why don’t you actually read the rules of the contest? You do not need a Facebook account… It’s open to the public… it is just like going on to any other website.

  • Administrator November 14, 2011, 8:50 am

Facebook is where the next generation of shooters connect with their friends. Having a strong gun world presence there is important for gun freedom in the next generation and we like everyone else can only hope that our efforts in this regard will make a difference.

  • Administrator November 14, 2011, 8:45 am

If you read the rules carefully you will notice that you don’t have to be a member of Facebook to join the contest. The wall on STAG is public and you don’t need to be a member to see it. You could check it every day for the code, which is emailed through normal channels, not through Facebook.

  • Justin taylor November 14, 2011, 8:08 am

This is my first close up of the Stag Arms AR15 The M3 is impressive, but the standard
