A home intruder was shot to death after incapacitating the homeowner with a chokehold. His fiancée stopped the attack.

Last week, a 65-year-old woman saved her fiancée’s life when she shot and killed an intruder in their rural Texas home.

After midnight last Saturday morning, Curtis Roys awoke to a loud banging on the back porch. His home is located outside of Fredericksburg, Texas, in Gilespie County. Fredericksburg is about 80 miles north of San Antonio.

The 73-year-old Roys went to investigate and was confronted by a young man who pushed Roys into the house through the patio and began beating him with a blunt object. The intruder then got Roys into a chokehold, the Gilespie County Sheriff’s Office reported.

About this time, Roys’s fiancée, Melody Lumpkin, came to check on her husband-to-be. She shouted for the intruder to let Roys go but he didn’t respond.

“Lumpkin made several pleas to the man to stop and he ignored her,” the sheriff’s office reported. “She retrieved a handgun from the bedroom and fired a warning shot out the patio door. The man continued the assault on Roys.”

Unphased, the intruder choked Roys until he passed out.

“[Lumpkin] noticed Roys was not moving, and fearing for her safety and that of Roys, she fired another shot which struck the man in the head,” reported the sheriff’s office.

Her shot to the intruder’s head incapacitated him. After Roys regained consciousness, he called 9-1-1 to report the attack.

Fredericksburg Fire and EMS responded and transported the intruder to Hill Country Memorial Hospital. From there, he was transported to University Hospital in San Antonio. He later died from his wound.

The alleged intruder was identified as Cleto Neri Solorzano, a 19-year-old man from Fredericksburg.

“While the investigation is ongoing, suspected drug use was indicated and this is considered an isolated incident,” Gilespie County Sheriff’s Office said.

Good for her and thank god the homeowners were ok and the perp was the only one injured. Welp he won’t do that again will he. Dang girl, pulling off a head shot in the heat of the moment, that’s some good shootin there.

  • Sad butt true March 18, 2022, 7:07 am

Wow. All the Monday-morning quarterbacking from the 98% keyboard-commandos that have never been in a shooting situation. But they are all experts in all matters other than English usage. The lady did the best she could under the circumstances. She did not have the luxury of sitting home and reading about it. She did not hide under the bed like many of the “well, I would have grabbed muh (insert mental masturbation implement HERE) dreamers posting here would have done. The ones that describe the particular firearm and ammo are particularly amusing. Keep up the great work, girls.

Can’t believe that iddiot is defending his criminal friend,he must be a criminal too ! Go back to school and learn to speak and write and act like a responsible citizen instead of trying to justify the misguided actions of your scumbag friend!

      • jd April 20, 2020, 7:02 pm

That’s the only thing you’re going to correct?

    • Frank Romo April 20, 2020, 1:38 pm

Well, if Cleto had been with you, maybe you’d be dead and he’d be alive, how’s that? This clown, broke into a occupied dwelling, choked out the man and was going for the woman. She even fired a warning shot, he could’ve run, but chose to approach her, she shot him, threat removed. If you want to try that, go ahead, you’ll be pushing daisies with Cleto…

  • Bob April 18, 2020, 11:25 pm

Well to be fair it was at night, usually too dark to be sure of your target. I wouldn’t fault her tactics given the outcome.

  • Charles Nash April 17, 2020, 4:20 pm

In a situation like that, never fire a warning shot. Also, this incident shows the importance of practicing shooting from very close range. One could imagine the intruder and the home owner, thrashing around, making a shot difficult. Great outcome.

    A warning shot? Really?

    • QuaranTEENED April 19, 2020, 8:05 pm

What is wrong with a warning shot? I don’t think anyone wants to kill someone. You never know until it’s you in that moment.

      • Don April 20, 2020, 8:06 am

        QuaranTEENED,

“What is wrong with a warning shot? I don’t think anyone wants to kill someone. You never know until it’s you in that moment.”

        Here’s what’s wrong with a warning shot…
Where did that bullet go? Even though they live in a rural area, pistol bullets can travel over a mile. Most of us have neighbors much closer than that.

What did firing it accomplish? Nothing, except to waste valuable time and resources.

What if there had been multiple attackers who didn’t know she was armed till she fired, and so they rushed her and now she didn’t have enough rounds to stop them? (I know, it was only one round…but you get the point. Why waste ammo?) Also, most bad guys who are either drugged-up or evil enough to do this type of crime in the first place aren’t afraid of the noise of a gunshot.

Top all this off with the legal ramifications and you’ll see that there is no valid reason to EVER fire a warning shot. IF you are justified in defending yourself of someone else: STOP the threat. Period.

Saying this as a former Law Enforcement Officer, my friend.

        Stay safe, y’all!!

        don

        • Walleye April 20, 2020, 10:29 am

Lighten up don. Not everyone who has access to a pistol has been paid to practice shooting it with free ammo like you. The average homeowner thrust into a stressful situation like this would be hard-pressed to do much better than this lady did. She’s much more a hero than some law enforcement cowards like Scot Peterson, the failed SRO who wet his pants during the Parkland, Florida school shooting. My motto: Do what I think is necessary. And since none of us were in her home that night, let’s not judge her actions.

        • Capn Stefano April 20, 2020, 10:35 am

Can only add a thumbs up and that a warning shot also indicates to bad actors that you aren’t truly ready to punch holes in them. Look how she waited until her fiancee was knocked out before she fired…

          • SD February 26, 2021, 11:43 am

Never fire a warning shot. If the situation calls for it, shoot center mass. If not, don’t shoot at all. Case closed.

  • MagnumOpUS April 17, 2020, 10:07 am

” The alleged intruder was identified as Cleto Neri Solorzano, a 19-year-old man from Fredericksburg. ”

Not from Fredericksburg, more likely from some sh!thole Latin America banana republic.

  • JOHN A April 17, 2020, 7:37 am

    Cleto?

    • JB April 17, 2020, 9:20 am

Yes, “Cleto.” PFC Cleto Rodriguez was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor in WW2 for saving his unit by killing a lot of Japanese soldiers, mostly on his own. There’s a Cleto Rodriguez Boulevard in San Antonio, TX and a rifle range named in his honor at Camp Perry, OH. I shoot there every summer. I like the name.

Yeah, it’s the hispanic version of “Cletus”, and I shall name a pet that immediately so that it can never be used in my family.

  • Will Drider April 16, 2020, 11:55 am

Male victim error, he went to investigate without the available gun.
Male victim error, he went OUTof the house and onto the porch where BG could attack him.
Female victim error she went to investigate during the fight without the available gun.
Female victim wasted precious seconds giving unnecessary verbal warnings to BG.
Female victim fired Warning Shot instead of shooting the Threat, male victim could have died.

Female did achieve desired end result of stopping the Threat, successful defensive gun use.

    • Stan d. Upnow April 17, 2020, 8:17 am

      My thoughts exactly.

    • Jim April 17, 2020, 2:37 pm

If he was being choked from behind, she probably didn’t feel confident of taking a shot without hitting her husband. Ergo the warning shot (I agree that neither one should have investigated without the firearm). After the victim was rendered unconscious, the BG stood and became target practice.

    • Capn Stefano April 20, 2020, 10:40 am

Nice analysis… I have drilled into my girl that she is never to go out, even into the backyard without her G23, and to ALWAYS use the peephole before opening the door. If someone knocks she never answers it, that’s my job, armed. I’ve also drilled into her that warnings and warning shots are folly. As Tuco said in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly: “If you’re gonna talk, talk. If you’re gonna shoot, shoot”

  • SuperG April 16, 2020, 9:22 am

It wasn’t an isolated incident, in that seniors are often the target, especially if they live out in the boonies. Myself, I would have been armed from the beginning and never have opened the door. Then I would have lit him up if he broke in.

    • G.O.A. Patriot April 17, 2020, 2:48 pm

Where I live we have a castle doctrine law. If that asshat was on my “castle” on the back porch in the wee hours of the morning, he would not have any warning at all but he would’ve been shot dead on the spot!!!

      • SD February 26, 2021, 11:55 am

G.O.A.Patriot, you’re an idiot. Suppose someone injured in a car wreck crawled to your porch and knocked on the door for help? I guess you’d shoot him right? Be prepared yes but identify your target dumb ass.

    • DavidC April 17, 2020, 2:53 pm

Here in Upstate NY, the pedo has to cross the threshold. After that, the is fair game, emphasis on game… Not sure I would have called the law. The coyotes out back always appreciate fresh meat.
