In a Sunday interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on a show called, “State of the Union,” Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke made it clear that he still supports confiscating modern sporting rifles from law-abiding citizens.
“Look, we are a state that has a long, proud tradition of responsible gun ownership. And most of us here in Texas do not want to see our friends, our family members, our neighbors shot up with these weapons of war. So, yes, I still hold this view,” O’Rourke told Bash.
As GunsAmerica previously reported, O’Rourke made headlines in 2019 at a Democratic presidential primary debate when he emphatically declared that his administration would disarm America.
“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” exclaimed O’Rourke.

Along with seizing firearms from responsible gun owners, O’Rourke hopes that as governor he can roll back the state’s new constitutional carry law that current Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed back in June.
“We don’t want extremism in our gun laws. We want to protect the Second Amendment. We want to protect the lives of our fellow Texans. And I know that when we come together and stop this divisive extremism that we see from Greg Abbott right now, we’re going to be able to do that,” he said.
The notion that constiutional carry laws are “extreme” or part of a fringe phenomenon is deeply flawed. As many as 20 states (those in green) have passed similar laws over the years, per wikipedia. Additionally, Pennsylvania and Ohio are now considering permitless carry legislation.

What is extreme, however, is Beto’s unflinching belief that one’s right to keep and bear arms is subject to ceaseless infringement.

for the pinheads on this list (which is generally a majority) there is a DIFFERENCE between Concealed Carry and the simple possession of sporting arms.

Beto is not playing to his strengths here. A lot of the right-wing base is mad at Abbot over his lockdowns and the primary is shaping up to be as heated of a contest as Texas has seen in a long time, with sharks like Allan West or that Huffines guy or that clown Prather. Beto doesn’t need to unnecessarily stir up controversy a year out from the general election. Let the Republicans eat their own, there is no need to sink to their level.
I mean, he’s right. At least with a carry permit, a licensee has to sit through a class, not that the responsibilities of carrying a firearm in public can be adequately explored in a weekend. Letting any joker that can pass a background check in a flawed and broken incomplete background check system like NICS carry in public is just asking for trouble.
O’Rourke isn’t playing to Texas’ history of resisting attempts at gun control. He committed political suicide with his comment.

Laws opening lawful Constitutional carry are the only ones that have loosened politicians’ grip on The People in my 70-year lifetime. Lots of states now allow it, and because most people who’ve waited to exercise their Second Amendment right until it became a privilege are law-abiding adults, the benefits always outweigh the downside.
