A Texas woman shot a would-be carjacker in the face last Wednesday night to protect her two young sons who were located in the vehicle, FOX 4 reports.

Michelle Booker-Hicks, the victim, was candid about the encounter and why she opted to use force in defense of herself and her 2 and 4-year-old sons.

“I wasn’t necessarily worried about my car,” she said. “I was more worried about my kids.”

“I’m not a killer or anything, but I do believe in defending what’s mine,” she continued. “I hope that woke him up.”

The incident started around 10 p.m. when Booker-Hicks was paying for gas at a Shell station located on Interstate 35 in Dallas.

Suddenly, a strange man hopped into her vehicle, which was still running. Booker-Hicks immediately took action.

“I proceeded to jump in my backseat and told the gentleman to stop, to get out the car. He would not get out of the car. He turned around and looked at me,” she said. “I reached over the armrest to get my glove compartment and that’s when I fired at him once I got the gun from my glove compartment.”

The projectile struck the perp just under his right eye, which caused him to crash the car into a nearby fence. Wounded, he got out of the car and collapsed in the middle of the street. Police later identified him as 36-year-old Ricky Wright. He was taken to a local hospital where he was said to be in serious but stable condition.

No one else was injured.

Wright has an extensive criminal history, including charges for drugs, assault, family violence, arson, theft, making a terroristic threat and resisting arrest. Following this foiled attempt to take Booker-Hick’s vehicle, he now will also face charges for unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Questions emerged as to whether Booker-Hicks would face charges for leaving her children unattended or using a firearm against Wright. Local attorney Toby Shook indicated to the news station that it’s unlikely given the known facts of the case.

“When children are involved, obviously the authorities are going to be very understanding of that,” Shook said. “The law says that if a reasonable person in her situation would have acted the same way, found it immediately necessary to protect herself or a third party, in this case her children, then that’s legitimate self-defense.”

Booker-Hicks said that she recently acquired the handgun for self-defense and does not yet have a concealed carry permit. In Texas, one doesn’t need a permit to carry a firearm in their vehicle.

Good for the young lady and her children. Somebody thought it was inappropriate for her to pay for the gas while kids sat in the car? No. She should have locked it, but how do people expect parents to function if they cannot step inside to quickly pay without their kids on their hip? The incident is the felon’s fault. Seems he got some of what was coming to him.

Where oh where does it say in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, that a law abiding
Citizen has to have a permit to carry?
The last four words and the most ignored words say it best.
    (SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED).

Concealed carry permits are an infringement on ones right to keep and bear arms.

Taxes on firearms and ammunition and related accesories are also an infringement on ones Liberties to own
Firearms and ammuntuon and related accessories to defend themselves and their families.

Per the article: “Wright has an extensive criminal history, including charges for drugs, assault, family violence, arson, theft, making a terroristic threat and resisting arrest.” Then what the h*ll was this man doing on the street!? Why was he not locked up under some jail?

Glad the woman is safe and did what had to be done, but too bad she didn’t kill him…now she has to worry about him coming back to get her.

It’s so retarded the state gets to say whether or not a self defense is “legitimate” or not, and I’m ashamed of those of you who so blindly support “law and order” or “the thin blue line” and prop up the terrible mess that is government and its longstanding abuse of authority. Abuse where a mother defending herself and her children could ‘potentially’ come up on charges.

Listing drugs in the perps rap sheet is irrelevant. Articles should leave victimless crimes off. He had plenty of other things worth noting.

  • Mike July 20, 2018, 6:32 pm

This lady needs her permit, I am sure we can get enough donated to cover her costs.
Is anybody near her location an instructor?

    • Monsoon July 22, 2018, 4:47 pm

Permits are not liberty. Also, this is Texas, where the system isn’t perfect, but having a firearm in one’s vehicle is not a crime (at least).

  • The Blue Moose July 20, 2018, 4:33 pm

Ummmm…Before you start judging this lady for having her car running. Need I remind you that we are talking TEXAS summer here. The same ones fussing about the car running, would likely be fussing that she had the kids in the car without A/C running. Oh, let me guess. Roll down the windows? Thus making it easy for a theif to reach in….(No winning in this situation) Bottom line is, the only recommendation ANYONE could give this deal lady is EMPTY THE FIREARM! Pull the trigger until there is nothing left to fire. GOOD JOB protecting your children. And I agree, with a rap sheet like that, this guy should have NEVER been outside of a prison anyway! He’s what bullets were made for!

  • frandanco July 20, 2018, 3:01 pm

I don’t know why, this lady was pumping gas with the car running in the first place.. That was a big no no..
Signs all over the place saying Shut Your Engine Off…
If she had just done that, and had the keys in her pocket, this probably would have never happened..

    • John D July 27, 2018, 3:37 am

Wake up frandanco! You’re another reason the world is so F’d up. Car running or not, what difference does it make. Her vehicle, her property no one has the right to touch nevertheless steal anything that doesn’t belong to them ( common sense and the right up bringing would make you understand that)! You’re just another leftist blaming the victim.
Let’s see how you react if something like this ever happens to you. I’m sure you’ll change your tune.

      • frandanco October 23, 2020, 1:09 pm

John D — YOU wake up you idiot ! I have forgotten more common sense than your little pea brain will ever have.
I was born and raised in Texas. All of my family including 4 Uncles and my Dad fought in WWII.
3 were 101st AirBorne, parachuting behind enemy lines the night before D-Day…
The other 2 fought the Japanese in the Philippines Islands…

I was in the Military from 1967-73 during Nam and the Cold War..

        YOU ???? Just a dimwit soyboy…
No one blaming the victim, you alarmist…
I KNOW how I would handle this because I think about it all the time, wherever I go..

Perhaps you never heard of eliminating ALL the reasons for bad people to pick you out????
Just shut up.. You are not helping…

    • MikeB August 16, 2019, 1:28 pm

It doesn’t say the car was running while she was pumping gas. It says it was running while she was paying. As far as I’m concerned, her only fault was firing one shot.

  • Ron July 20, 2018, 1:23 pm

In Texas, there is an archaic law that states if you are traveling from one county and pass into another county, legally you are considered a “bona fide traveler” and do not need a concealed carry license to have a firearm in your vehicle

State troopers and police should know this. BUT, that doesn’t mean if you’re stopped you won’t have to do a lot of explaining :). You ARE on legal ground though.

  • William Lynn July 20, 2018, 1:07 pm

I do love a good story with a happy ending.

  • lukeum July 20, 2018, 12:01 pm

gotta come up with an armor piercing pistol round

  • Connie July 20, 2018, 11:43 am

“Wright has an extensive criminal history.”

What the hell are the thousands of people, to whom the above comment applies, doing on the streets? And now some crazy lefties are saying we should abolish prisons. I’m afraid the SHTF is not that far off.

  • Leighton Cavendish July 20, 2018, 10:20 am

Shot in the face/head and survived? What kind of weapon and round?
Reads like maybe he got a glancing hit.
Always aim for largest target…center mass…unless you know body armor is in play…then go for the head.
Groin and thigh area works as well…femorals and family jewels down in that area…and pretty large target surface.

  • Sean July 20, 2018, 9:07 am

Too bad the bullet wasnt just above his eye. Then again if she killed the p.o.s. we would be dealing with the BLM terrorists and antifa fucks clogging up the freeways claiming it was race motivated. Is car theft race motivated? Youd think these people would get a clue, but nope… Rickey will probably make a full recovery and be back to raping and pillaging his neighborhood with his bros in no time and we get to pay for it. And yeah I said “these people” so what!

  • Steven July 20, 2018, 8:48 am

Never leave your car running, like she did.

    • ExGob July 22, 2018, 1:36 am

Maybe she had reason to leave the engine running. Maybe the battery was shot to hell and everything was running off the alternator.

This mother protected her children…and that’s what important here. The color and caliber of the weapon, whether it was a pistol or a revolver, whether she had a carry permit, whether she ever gets one…have nothing to do with her actions. She had a handgun and BYGOD SHE PROTECTED HER CHILDREN AND I COMMEND HER FROM THE BONE.

  • Steven July 20, 2018, 8:42 am

“In Texas, one doesn’t need a permit to carry a firearm in their vehicle.” Non-Texas residents (that do not have CCW permits) do have to have a permit to open carry in their vehicle, do they not?

    • Shawn McManus July 20, 2018, 11:38 am

“It depends.” If a non-Texas resident is in the U.S. illegally, then no.

Otherwise, anyone pretty much can. The usual caveats also apply: no felons, no one otherwise conducting illegal activity (like dealing drugs), etc.

  • Nick M July 20, 2018, 8:12 am

“When children are involved, obviously the authorities are going to be very understanding of that,” Shook said.”.

Wrong, Shook. Children do not need to be involved for her to exercise her God given, and supposed to be government enforced rights.

  • Tim July 20, 2018, 7:35 am

Charge the mother for leaving the children unattended? Hell, she was buying gas. Does she need to hire a babysitter just so she can go fill her tank? She was with the car, where her children were, and where she has every right and expectation to be, unaccosted. She tended to the children extremely well. She was alert AND prepared. If the perp had driven away with the kids, the discussion would be about the tragedy, not which crimes the mother committed.

  • Jesse Scott July 20, 2018, 7:01 am

And now we get to foot his hospital bill. Shoulda let him go room temp in the street.

  • Andy Buckmichael July 20, 2018, 6:55 am

Like I have always said, if you are dealing with a criminal or a cop, aim for the head.

    • LJ July 20, 2018, 10:01 pm

… or a cop …? It’s people like you that give the human race a bad name. I hope you never have to depend on a cop to protect your sorry ass.

  • otto jr anderson July 20, 2018, 6:34 am

  • darryl July 20, 2018, 4:37 am

why was this guy even out of jail? just another black guy breaking the law and the crying lefty and other black leaders wonder why so many blacks are in prison but they think because there are more of them instead of whites or any other color that it’s just wrong for no other reason then their numbers don’t add up for them.

  • Dr Motown July 12, 2018, 2:22 pm

Poor Rickey….he was just getting his life together after his 4th parole….even sang in the church choir with Reverend Cleophus….I’m sure it was all a terrible misunderstanding since he just needed a ride to help his crippled momma.
