If you think the only advantages to a gun-mounted laser aiming system are the confidence it inspires and intimidation factor when you paint the perp, then you’re sorely in need of a free copy of Crimson Trace’s “The Laser’s Edge” DVD. Sit down for 40 minutes and you’ll see how any laser’s instant feedback can be used to improve trigger control, maximize your safety if detaining a criminal until authorities arrive, and much more.

Yes, the company’s products are showcased, and you’ll also receive a Crimson Trace catalog with the DVD, but this is anything but pure marketing hype. A panel of six of the nation’s foremost firearms experts was assembled to discuss and, better yet, show viewers exactly how to use handgun-mounted laser systems to improve their self-defense skills.

The Laser's Edge, Crimson Trace,

One of the scenes on the DVD is a true story about a woman who was about to be attacked, but the perpetrator immediately retreated when she “painted” him with her handgun-mounted laser.

I learned a whole bunch of stuff I didn’t expect. Criminal attacks don’t come when you expect them, so six-time USPSA champion Todd Jarrett walks viewers through a dark parking-lot scenario, explaining how a laser can improve your ability to effectively use cover and concealment during a life-and death confrontation. The laser’s advantages when on the move are made obvious.

Julie Golob, the only woman to shoot for the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, competitive shooter and author, takes a close look at how you can improve your trigger control and shrink groups by harnessing the laser’s instant dry-fire practice feedback. During a panel discussion she also discusses the one-size-fits-all approach taken by many so-called experts when recommending gear for women.

The Laser's Edge, Todd Jarrett, Crimson Trace

Todd Jarrett explains the advantages of a laser when seeking cover and concealment during a dark parking lot scenario on the DVD.

Firearms consultant, author and terminal ballistics expert Richard Mann addresses a phenomenon known as tunnel vision, which often occurs during a criminal confrontation. When that “tunnel” closes in as you concentrate and focus on the bad guy, doorways that may reveal a gun-toting accomplice are being ignored. The consequences could be deadly, but the laser can help with peripheral vision, weapon retention and keeping a better eye on your surroundings.

Among the others heard from on the DVD are Michael Bane, TV host and author, Iain Harrison, 3-Gun competitor and former winner on the series “Top Shot,” and Dave Starin, a retired SWAT officer who is currently Gunsite Academy’s training director. Each addresses different facets of laser use, and yes, some of the advantages of Crimson Trace products.

The DVD also includes installation instructions for Crimson Trace products, biographies of the participants and outtakes that can be viewed at your discretion. And, before you incorrectly surmise this is a boring, technical session that won’t capture your attention, a 16-year-old gun enthusiast who spends some of his time in front of a gaming station didn’t budge for the entire 40 minutes.

Richard Mann, The Laser's Edge, Crimson Trace

Richard Mann produced the DVD and ensured it would be educational for all who carry a handgun for self-defense.

Mann explained the educational slant. “When I was asked to produce ‘The Laser’s Edge’ DVD for Crimson Trace I had three requirements; it had to be filmed at Gunsite, it had to be practical and it had to be educational. The result of all those hours of hard work is a DVD I think all who keep a handgun for protection can benefit from.”

Regardless of the laser you have on your handgun, or what model you may be thinking about purchasing, the material contained in this DVD will help you realize its full potential. And when seconds count, you’ll want every advantage possible.

I have used my Kimber with only the Crimson trace laser at night to clear a room. The laser gives enough light and it doesn’t kill your night vision.

I have a Crimson Trace laser on a Ruger LC9 . The extra time to turn it on is zero as compared to the same gun with a Lasermax laser. Not even close. Not really any extra bulk either. I got no complaints. All happy here!

  • Robert P February 25, 2013, 4:17 pm

I would say anything that will give you an edge in a very stressful event is worth it.

  • Oscar M. February 25, 2013, 11:41 am

I purchased my Kimber Custom. 45 ACP with a Crimson Trace grip laser and also added mepros night sights. The perp will never have a chance! If you want the best then I recommend Crimson Trace lasers to give you the edge at the range or Home defense.

Drawbacks are the added bulk when trying to do concealed carry, the extra time required to activate the switch, and the fact that the bad guy now knows where you are in the dark.
