The process to own a handgun in Canada is unbelievably onerous by American standards, but that isn’t stopping Canadian officials from calling for a total, nationwide handgun ban.

The Toronto Star, one of Canada’s largest newspapers, published an editorial this week urging the newly-elected Liberal government to pass the ban, arguing that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pledge to allow cities to enact their own firearm laws doesn’t go far enough.

“Toronto’s board of health has added its voice to a chorus of municipal governments, health professionals and advocacy groups calling for a national ban on handguns,” the editors claim. “It’s time the Liberal government listened.”

Toronto’s Mayor John Tory backs the ban as well.

“I have asked, ‘Why does anybody in Toronto need a handgun?’ and I think that applies to other cities as well,” he said. “I think we have to wait now for the federal government to spell out what they meant and see. I would still prefer a national handgun ban because I think that’s a lot easier to administer and it doesn’t bring the provinces into it, I don’t think, because it’s within federal jurisdiction under criminal law.”

The newspaper called the idea that a ban would punish legal gun owners “ludicrous.”

“I think losing a child is punishment,” Wendy Cukier, president of the Coalition for Gun Control, said at a board of health meeting. “Finding a new hobby is not.”

As in the United States, advocates of stricter gun control measures believe guns are the primary driver of gun-related crime.

“The vector of the disease is the bullet. It is the gun,” said Dr. Najma Ahmed, a trauma surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital and co-founder of the Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns.

Her group’s “public health” approach to gun-related violence includes solutions like banning the possession of all firearms nationwide.

The Toronto Board of Health’s “public health” approach similarly recommends a nationwide ban on handguns and semi-automatic “military assault weapons” along with an ammunition ban in the city of Toronto.

These recommendations come while the process to purchase, possess, and transport a handgun already requires sixteen hours of class time, extensive background checks, membership in a shooting club (in some provinces), application for a license to own a handgun, firearm registration, application for a license to transport a firearm, and a requirement to store the handgun locked and unloaded.

A handgun ban has gained popularity as the gun-related crime rate has risen in Toronto and other Canadian cities.

Since the proposal is to ban an inanimate object, I would expect the proposal to include other objects that have the capability to kill people. Sounds logical, right? How quick the good people of Toronto have forgot about April 23, 2018. The day a VAN drove through a crowd in Toronto, killing 10 people. I would expect the proposal to include a nationwide ban on vans. After all, it’s not the persons fault that pulled the trigger or drove the van. It’s the gun and vans fault. So what is the real reason you want guns banned?

You good natured Canadian’s really need to unelect that blathering idiot Trudeau ASAP! He needs to disappear into the great white north by whatever means necessary. And, the sooner the better!

Oh my these people are really going insane. It reminds me of the twilight zone where aliens caused lights to blink cars not start and they all blaming their neighbors attacking each other. No9w everyone who owns a handgun is a alien. This last kid got ghost guns. That is bad news when a 16 yo could acquire guns it really hurts us. That will have to stop.

Canada is a Socialist country. I lived there for 17 years and know it well. I learned a lot of things there, such as when you are married, it doesn’t matter that you purchased a few cars and your wife stole them from you, cause what you own, she owns, and the police even protected her when she did it. When she emptied my house of all content, there was nothing that I could do. When I had no other place to reside and I tried to stay in my empty home, people visited my house in the middle of the night and I had no means of protecting myself. That’s when I decided that I needed to go back to my country, where I could protect myself and my property. Should you want to learn lots more about Canadian oppression and Socialism, I’ve written a book, Reward 25 cents by Dave Lemay. When you give up your guns, you give up your freedom! Canada is not a free country and it’s currently on a big downhill swing. Virtually no one there has guns, except the bad guys and their numbers are growing.

It sounds like an ideal place for scumbags to freely pursuit lives of crime.

A bunch of helpless, defenseless lemmings just waiting to be taken advantage of without any type of recourse. Which certainly does sound like a communist country to me.

It’s really too bad, because the country is stunningly beautiful, and the hunting and fishing are truly world-class!

Canada is a vassal of the Crown and is still ruled by tyranny. Thank God and our courageous forefathers for the Second Amendment. It is the only thing that separates America from every other nation in the world. The unalienable right to keep and bear arms puts power directly into the hands of the people — the power to defend their lives, their liberty and their pursuit of happiness. If Canada is too timid to embrace the Spirit of 1776, then may their chains set lightly upon them.

The problem here is that Canada is a socialist country. They own you because they give your everything so they can take or give whatever they deem fit. Socialism/communism are the same thing, just socialism is smoke and mirrors to make you think you are free, and communism is straight and to the point, do what we say or else. But in all reality they are the same. Your last hope Canada is gone. Because once Socialism is established as your countries way of life, it is there forever. Your citizens gave them the power, just as Germany gave Hitler the power, so now you are owned and payed for by this system. You gave up your freedom for free shit, just as the Millennial generation wants to do here in America, because history is not taught in K-12 schools anymore. All they see is the free shit, but just like a website with all the small fine print to read, and nobody does as you have to be a lawyer to understand it, that is what is happening to Socialism in America. This dumbest generation in the history of this country, wants all things free, and doesn’t read the fine print as to what freedoms they have to give up to get it and they don’t care. Think Obamacare and put that down as Socialism, and you remember what a failure that was. We are still trying to undo that nightmare. This Millennial generation if allowed to, will be the downfall of America as we older generations knew it. They are lazy, stupid, complacent, and think they know everything about everything. They have even begin to ruin a once great fighting force, known as the SEALS. And that scares the hell out of this Veteran who saw them in action when they were great.

The stricter the Gun control Laws are the worse the crime rate. Fact, look it up!

This is a clear data point confirming that Canadians are not citizens, but instead, are subjects of a queen. They have no 2A, so I guess that they get whatever their queen (or the mob) says they should get.

  • rsmalt November 22, 2019, 9:29 am

“…..gun-related crime rate has risen in Toronto and other Canadian cities.”

So, why not add ANOTHER pointless law, which will be ignored! Brilliant!

    Proof positive that liberals…..wherever they’re from…..are idiots.

Lived in Toronto in the late sixties. Safest city in North America at the time. No street gangs at the time. You cannot say who or what the problem is without the race card being played today.

  • MB November 22, 2019, 9:09 am

Well, lets see how far that goes. I used to think the Cannuks and the Ausies were reasonable and brave people, Liberalism is a real disease, destroyer of nations. Remember Rome was also a victim of it’s own liberal beliefs.

  • Ardvark November 22, 2019, 7:23 am

Around the world, government at various levels seek to disarm and control their citizens and the media is always ready to spread whatever propaganda is required to aide in that control happening!

    • deanbob November 22, 2019, 9:46 am

You are correct. Everything has a cycle. Is the cycle of “liberty” is waning? Is the kind of “liberty” the US has influenced around the world waning?

  • BradB November 22, 2019, 7:06 am

I noticed this statement: “I would still prefer a national handgun ban because I think that’s a lot easier to administer and it doesn’t bring the provinces into it, I don’t think, because it’s within federal jurisdiction under criminal law.”

There is a chiastic structure there. The first and last clause contain related themes, thus pointing to the clause in the middle as the real takeaway.

Clause 1 – related theme to clause 3:
I would still prefer a national handgun ban because I think that’s a lot easier to administer and it doesn’t bring the provinces into it

    Clause 2 – what he’s really saying:
    I don’t think…

Clause 3 – related theme to clause 1:
because it’s within federal jurisdiction under criminal law.

  • Jason Coffey November 22, 2019, 6:47 am

And they will probably get it too considering the fools re-elected Trudeau. Canadians are the smartest lacking common sense people you will ever meet!

    • Richardson November 22, 2019, 12:42 pm

Easy there tiger! Not all Canadians are drinking the Kool-Aid. There are many of us who are proud gun owners and see through this nonsense. LOL A good friend of mine once said they should take the city of Toronto, build a big wall around it and fill it with water. If this had taken place in a timely fashion, TURDeau would have never been re-elected. If you followed the last election you would know but the people spoke up and the liberal government got the boot for many provinces. As for the rest, common sense is not so common.

      • Richardson November 22, 2019, 12:45 pm

Sorry, it appears autocorrect got the best of me a couple times there but you get the point.

Bans don’t work…USA tried with alcohol and illegal drugs…both total and utter failures…

  • Rich K. November 22, 2019, 4:43 am

WHich further proves that Canada is NOT a free country. We share a border with a soon-to-be totalitarian state.

    • Kevin Baxter November 22, 2019, 9:30 am

      Soon to be?

  • Mark N. November 21, 2019, 12:54 am

“A handgun ban has gained popularity as the gun-related crime rate has risen in Toronto and other Canadian cities.”

First Question: Are the people committing all of this gun-related crime those persons who go through the time and trouble of getting the proper license and authorizations who have registered their hand guns? Or are they just the thug criminal class who don’t obey any of those laws?

Second Question. If the people committing all of these gun-related crimes are the criminal underclass, what makes any of you idiots think that taking guns away from law-abiding individuals will have any efficacy in lowering the crime rate?

Third Question: Did you know that the average citizen if Mexico can own no handguns other than .22s and 9mms? Do you know what the murder rate is in Mexico?

    • deanbob November 22, 2019, 9:51 am

Given the propensity of the left to not want to really incarcerate (aka deprive people of their freedom!), how often are people who commit crime with guns repeat offenders?

  • Decarius November 20, 2019, 4:56 am

I guess that registration of arms works. That’s just what is coming here to the good old U.S.A. I like how people see the second amendment in the Constitution protects their rights. I want to see those people hold up a copy of it when they come knocking on their door to confiscate their guns. It would be amazing to see the Jack boots just stand outside your door dumbfounded not knowing what to do. The forefathers knew that only physical resistance keeps a free person from being subjugated. Tyrants and dictators do not listen to voices of reason. Just as gun control advocates see only guns as nothing more than a hobby. While they still require their security guards and the police to be armed. They don’t understand we bear arms to defend our HOME and LOVED ones just as our military defends our country and the people that reside within it.

    • deanbob November 22, 2019, 9:59 am

I’d guess that is a product of ignorance (ie lack of a meaningful education ). I graduated high school more than 50 years ago with a decent education. And, what I have learned since about our founding fathers, the founding principles, and American world history really make me wonder about how long (not to mention how much) the dumbing down of America via agenda driven education has been going on.
