Must-Watch Video: Stossel, Lott Debunk Fake News on Mass Public Shootings in U.S.

2nd Amendment – R2KBA Authors Current Events S.H. Blannelberry This Week

This is a must-watch video from our friend Dr. John Lott Jr. who runs the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC).

In the video Dr. Lott, along with the help of journalist John Stossel, debunks the Obama-era study that claimed the U.S. has “by far the most mass shooters.”

It’s simply not true.  Lott’s research team actually investigated mass public shootings around the globe and found 1,448 instances — and 3,081 shooters — outside the United States between 1998 and 2012.  Meaning that while the U.S. accounts for 4.4 percent of the world’s population, it accounts for only 2.88 percent of its mass public shootings.

Lott’s team also found that the U.S. ranks 62nd, below countries like Norway (14), Finland (31), Switzerland (45) and Russia (51), when it comes the murder rate from mass public shootings per 100,000 people.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media has glommed onto that misleading Obama-era study and has done very little to disseminate the truth in the wake of the CPRC’s findings.  This is why Dr. Lott needs your help to get the word out!  Please like and share this video on social media.  Send it to friends and family via email.

Mass public shootings are indeed a problem but part of the solution is learning the facts about them.  Certain advocacy groups want to suggest that these massacres are unique to the U.S. because of its high rate of gun ownership.  The underlying suggestion being that guns are to blame.  This is WRONG!

The truth is that responsible gun ownership is one of the most effective ways to combat mass public shootings.  Did you know that concealed carriers in the U.S. stopped 11.5 percent of active shooter incidents from 2000-2017?

Imagine what that percentage could be if all states had permissive concealed carry laws and government (and media and Hollywood) empowered citizens to bear arms instead of working collectively to demonize guns and disarm America.

Finally, Dr. Lott is asking for donations for CPRC.  Since it’s a nonprofit with an operating budget of about $200,000 per year (not a lot of money for a team of dedicated researchers to work on), he needs all the financial support he can muster.  Visit CrimeResearch.org to learn how you can lend a hand.

That’s more snakes than were publicly killed in all of Alaska in the last 40 years.

Trouble is most readers here won’t make it past the self-assuring headline so that they then can say we don’t have a problem. Forget about Sandy Hook, Las Vegas, etc. Other countries have it somewhat worse! Nothing wrong here. Keep buying guns guys! Whoopee!

  • Robert December 21, 2018, 11:30 am

Anti gunners are posting comments here and posing as pro 2nd Amendment folks who are disappointed in this report.
Reports like this fool put out are always packed with lies made up on the fly. Just like the global warming and vaccine crap.

  • Adam December 21, 2018, 9:33 am

How disappointing. I was looking forward to a valid opposing view to show some of my avid anti gun aquaintances and instead I found twisted statistics and straight up false information 🙁 Boy am I glad I didn’t just send this heir way blindly and end up looking like a dumbass.

Guys, don’t share this please, it doesn’t help and makes our case weaker. Sigh.

    • Reggie December 21, 2018, 11:49 am

Adam… you did not mention what was invalid. Which stats were false and twisted?

Without addressing the issues you claim to be false, your “disappointment” appears to be the only thing credible in your post.

Sounds like you are just an internet troll.

    • Al December 21, 2018, 1:11 pm

Sorry B.A. (bullshit artist), you already look like a dumbass, because the “valid opposing views” are ALL OVER the MSM!!!!!
Not to mention foolish one, the article itself was ABOUT a supposed “valid opposing view”!
You’re not very good at being a Troll, ya’know?

    • Phil April 3, 2020, 7:46 am

Adam – Facts are facts. Being dismissive of facts shows an arrogance bordering on irresponsibility.

Angola, Iraq, sure it would make us look good….maybe you should look at rate of occurrence for instance…death rate/population for similar event, say a mass shooting of 10 people, is going to make Denmark worse than us….even if US has 1 of these a month…..talking about looking at the data a specific way to make your point

  • Adam Freeman December 21, 2018, 8:10 am

I also appreciated listening to this unbiased, detailed, specific news piece for its excellent information. Not only was the content well-written and edited, but the evidence-based journalistic approach from Dr. Lott and Mr. Stossel was very well done.

If there was some method of weaving this type of “authentic information” into every media outlet, whether it be left/right/or in the middle I sure bet more Americans of all kinds would pay closer attention.

Now, I am no “dreamer” in terms of thinking that a large percentage of Americans who are determined to stick to their beliefs, based on fact or not, would “switch camps” and immediately become gun aficionados based on this data. However I strongly believe that over time this type of nonjudgmental reporting would certainly help balance the conversation about guns in America.

Fairness is a tough commodity these days in my favorite country (yes I am biased on this point!) but I try to maintain respect for the opposing voices. Most often, as exemplified in this wonderful nugget of investigative reporting if you drill down and look more closely at the authentic evidence you can make a much more reasoned and thoughtful understanding of any situation.

To be completely transparent, I work as a public elementary school teacher in a district strongly influenced by politics on every side. As a public employee for a highly suburbanized, extremely diverse county both in terms of socioeconomic status (wealth/poverty) and demographics (race/culture/gender identity) you can only imagine how unnecessarily challenging my simple job of being a classroom teacher of really great kids has become over the years. The miscommunication and disinformation about the topic of firearms is part of this as well.

    Thanks GunsAmerica!

I just searched for “Mass shootings in Norway”, and the result was – There was a mass shooting in Norway in 2011, then 6 years with ZERO mass shootings, then another one in 2017. This article is “made up facts”, no way could the US which has better than one mass shooting per day, have fewer mass shootings per capita than a country who had a 6 years stretch with ZERO. I’m not bothering looking up the rest …. this article claims Norway has the 14th highest rate. Norway has very very little crime in general and mass shootings basically don’t exist.

    • Aaron December 21, 2018, 9:43 am

Michael. Mass shootings even in the us are very rare. Norway has a population of 5.2 million that is nearly 1/8 the population of California. And 1/62 of USA. So 1 mass shooting in 6 yrs will throw off the numbers. Point of the article is mass shootings do happen outside of us and at a rate greater than the us (with respect to population)

    • Al December 21, 2018, 1:17 pm

      One mass shooting a Day?????
      Bullshit.
So, right off we know what you are.
BTW, who are you quoting with “made up facts”???
You and your buddy Adam aren’t very good at this.
Or are you the same person?
      Hmmm.

    • Alpha Foxtrot December 21, 2018, 5:01 pm

Alright! Does sound like trolling behavior to me. Sorry, but when anyone claims something as fact, I always look immediately for hard, conclusive, vetted evidence. Let’s take a closer look here:

      QUOTE….

“I just searched for “Mass shootings in Norway”, and the result was – There was a mass shooting in Norway in 2011, then 6 years with ZERO mass shootings, then another one in 2017.” a 10-second internet search? not any way to confirm anything.

“This article is “made up facts”, no way could the US which has better than one mass shooting per day, have fewer mass shootings per capita than a country who had a 6 years stretch with ZERO.” how do YOU define “mass shooting” here? does mass shooting include or preclude any other criminal activity?

“I’m not bothering looking up the rest …. this article claims Norway has the 14th highest rate. Norway has very very little crime in general and mass shootings basically don’t exist.” explain how you know that this is fact. how can you prove otherwise?

what this response most closely exemplifies is clearly your own opinion, completely devoid of fact. thank you for puppetting the anti-gun agenda, friend!

  • Dr Motown December 21, 2018, 7:04 am

There are no journalists anymore, just blind ideologues who look for any flimsy story or anecdotal “evidence” that supports their ideology

  • Dave December 21, 2018, 4:13 am

When information is withheld, red flags go up. Columbine is the last mass shooting that I know of….due to the evidence presented. All others since then haven’t shown any proof or evidence. Parkland school as I have heard, refuses to release its video surveillance footage to news media.

  • Don December 18, 2018, 6:35 am

Adults know the truth and statistics on the subject and are well aware Who’s doing these shootings and why. The game is nothing but a Dumbascrap ploy to push their disarmament game to grab absolute control…nothing more.

    • Dr Motown December 21, 2018, 7:02 am

We already know that the anti-gunners need to throw in suicides in order to make their “statistics” look more frightening. It’s always intellectually disingenuous to classify gun suicides as “gun violence” whereas deaths from prescription drug overdoses are NEVER classified as “medical malpractice” or “Grade V toxicity”

    • No1hunter December 21, 2018, 10:13 am

Well then it appears all those illegals at the border need go back to their own countries where it is safer!!!!! There claim for asylum in the USA because it is safer here just went out the door.
