The hosts of ABC’s The View can always be relied on for the best, most thoughtful reactions to current events, and they recently aimed their collective brainpower at the recent mass murders in Atlanta and Boulder.
Former CNN analyst Sunny Hostin told the audience that Americans must stop equating “freedom” with “the unfettered right to own assault rifles.”
“That is not freedom because I feel like a hostage right now,” she said. “I feel like a hostage to the selfish people who insist on owning these type of weapons… You are not a patriot because you think you have the right to own these type of weapons. You are not a patriot. You should be taking care of your fellow Americans.”
No analysis on The View would be complete without a few misrepresentations and outright lies, and Hostin’s was no exception.

The right to own “assault rifles,” for example, is far from “unfettered” (much to the chagrin of gun-rights advocates). Americans are prohibited from owning firearms (including any kind of rifle) if they
- are convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year;
- are a fugitive from justice;
- are an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance;
- have been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution;
- are an illegal alien;
- have been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions;
- have renounced his or her United States citizenship,
- are subject to a court order restraining the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child of the intimate partner,
- have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
Hostin goes on to claim that the Boulder massacre was the seventh such massacre in “the last week alone.” If this strikes you as unlikely, well, you’re right!
According to an anti-gun outlet called The New York Times (you may have heard of it), there have 29 massacres with four or more fatalities in the last five years. This year, there have been a grand total of two, both of which occurred this month.
It’s unclear where Hostin is getting her statistics, but the former lawyer should probably have a word with her producers.
Hostin concludes by recommending, “It is time to start talking, right now, about gun control.”

The View host may be unaware of the history of gun control in this country, but its roots date back to the 1800s, and it was used to keep black Americans from owning firearms. It continued with the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968, the Gun Owners Protection Act of 1986, and the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1994.
By my count, we’ve been talking about gun control for at least 150 years, and it seems like we haven’t talked about anything else for the last 10.

The people she should be afraid of are not those who obtained and own their ARs by legal means. She should fear those who obtained their weapons illegally.
Although there are exceptions, the vast majority of people who plan to use a weapon in a crime don’t drop into their neighborhood gun shop for their means to carry out their crime.

The countless law abiding citizens who choose to safely exercise their second amendment rights by owning the ergonomic and easy to use rifle she so vilifies.
She should feel free to swear an oath to defend the constitution and spend a few years in service to our country before questioning patriotism.
Until then, if Sunny chooses to denounce our patriotism, may this hubris cause her fall from her lofty soapbox.

“Assault” is an act, “weapon” is how an object is used. A firearm is a tool, just like a jack, hammer or ax.
Look at the problem they had in England (before Covid) when people were being attacked with common kitchen knives and acid.
Think about something – laws (any law) only affects two groups of people – those that enforce the laws and those that obey them. The people they claim that a new law will stop already ignore (violate) several laws and it is more than foolish to think they will suddenly obey any new laws.
Go after the people that are causing the problems, not the tools.

The “7th mass shooting in a week” statistic that they’re using is coming from CNN. CNN is using the definition of 4 or more people killed _or wounded_. Most of the qualifying events are gang-related such as drive-bys, where the wounded are just grazed or sometimes even the injury is from trying to get out of the way rather than the gunfire itself. Other than the Atlanta and Boulder cases, out of the other “5” mass shootings, there were 2 deaths total.

If Ms Hostin feels like a hostage due to AR-15 owners then she is uninformed of who owns the AR-15 rifles . We are veterans, farmers, sportsmen/women and concerned citizens that deal with wildlife that hurts our crops, livestock and we put food on the table with them, not to mention they are fun to target shoot with. Most gun violence is done with handguns in this country not rifles. Just because the weapon looks scary that doesn’t make it more or less dangerous–its the person who has their finger on the trigger. Only one gun in history, that I am aware of, has ever been named an assault rifle was the Nazi German Stg-44. An AR-15 ,stands for Armalite Rifle model 15. It is not a weapon or war nor an automatic weapon. Only one bullet is fired for each pull of the trigger. The only thing automatic about it is it ejects the spent cartridge and chambers a new cartridge. That makes it a semi-automatic weapon. On others you need to cycle a lever or bolt or a slide to achieve the same result. These liberal elites don’t worry about having to wait for police to come when they call, they don’t concern themselves with criminal activities because they have armed security to protect them.

Most of the anti-gun and even pro-gun people have never had a life and death incident where a gun was the only tool that saved their life. When that happens, there’s no turning back if you were on the sidelines or even against guns. I am my mother’s caregiver and she’s partially disabled. She was similar to those non-sensical women on that show, especially sonny. That was until about two years ago when I was faced with a major decision to almost shoot and possibly kill 1 of 4 typical ex-con thugs from a south central gang who tried to do a home invasion while we were at home. I was already on the phone with a sheriff reporting a suspicious person and a luxury car. A minute later 3 jumped out of the car; 2 ran one way and another the other way. One guy jumped one of our gates and was making his way to the backyard. Time seemed to stop as I saw what was happening below me. I told the deputy on the phone to come quickly but I was of course panicking. I willed myself to breathe slowly and avoid panicking and other problems that occur when panicking like tunnel vision. The deputy on the phone was trying to calm me down but there was no time to even talk anymore. I told him I was grabbing my shotgun, went downstairs, and positioned myself as I aimed and swept my shotgun, anticipating a window or door crashing loudly. In about 2 seconds, a thug with thick green gloves and outstretched arms appeared near the corner of the rear doors. All was over and they took off faster then they came. The first sheriff arrived 15 minutes later! I was on cell phone with the deputy the entire time but I must have placed the phone on the stairs when I positioned myself to shoot whoever would have entered our house. I live in a very nice neighborhood, so even that didn’t and doesn’t deter crime. Thugs like the kind you see in cRap videos still managed to target our home. And two unrelated couples tried robbing or possibly invading our home later on on two different occasions. The guy from one of the couples even hid behind the front door, preparing to attack whoever would have answered the door. I will never ask anyone or any government for permission to defend myself and loved ones. Unjust and illegal laws only serve to disarm the victim and further perpetrate victimhood. A cursory research of the greater L.A. area will easily demonstrate that.
