WATCH: Armed Store Clerk Convinces Shotgun-Wielding Suspect to Leave

Defensive Use of Firearms This Week

Earlier this month, a would-be robber walked into a convenience store in Escambia County, Florida, and was quickly convinced to leave the premises after being confronted by an armed employee.

The suspect, identified as Rakim Stephen Tate, 32, was carrying a Benelli shotgun.

In a post on Facebook, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office disclosed how the incident unfolded:

On September 9, 2022, a bad decision became a worse decision when a shotgun-wielding man entered a convenience store on the 4000-block of North Pace Blvd. With the shotgun close to his side, he walks into the store and looks around. At this time, he doesn’t notice anyone behind the counter…so he watches and waits. Unbeknownst to the “would-be” robber, a store employee had watched him arm himself before entering the store. This employee headed to the backroom to arm himself (with his own personal gun).

Back to this “would-be” robber…with his shotgun in hand, he waits for the employee to emerge. Seconds later, when he sees the employee return, he freezes…oh boy. The employee returned to the counter holding his own gun toward the befuddled attempted robber. He then fumbles for words, resorting to meaningless babble about being from Chicago. Words seem to fail you when your felony attempt is thwarted by lawful and righteous force. Thankfully, he decides that it is not the time for a robbery, and he slowly exits the store.

Tate was arrested days later on Sept. 15 in Santa Rosa County. Authorities charged him with “openly carrying a prohibited weapon and attempted robbery with a firearm.”

Law enforcement also recovered the shotgun Tate used in the foiled robbery.

Will this be counted as a defensive gun use by the FBI since no shots were fired? I am assuming the clerk stood in cover with his gun raised already and told the guy to leave. That is what any person semi trained in defensive shooting should do. In this case your gun at your side will not do you a lot of good against a shotgun. Clerk could have dialed 911 on his phone and left it open near the counter. I don’t think there was enough time for a full discussion with 911 operator, but an open phone link would probably do the trick and get PD coming. Glad the clerk was alert and situation aware. Should be a lesson to all of us-you don’t know when evil is coming. in this case he saw it split seconds before it walked in the door.

Every time someone doesn’t properly deal with a criminal on the spot, the POS will learn from the experience and become more prone to be the first to use lethal force. The criminal mind does not think like us. They are aberrant life forms.

I guess he forgot that unlike Chicago, law-abiding citizens can have guns in Florida.
