Police in Garland, Texas, are searching for a 14-year-old boy they believe shot and killed three other teenagers in a gas station ambush last week.
Surveillance footage of the incident shows the boy sneaking up to the door of the gas station, opening the door, and firing about 20 shots from a .40-caliber handgun. Three teen boys — 14-year-old Xavier Gonzalez, 16-year-old Ivan Noyala and 17-year-old Rafael Garcia – were killed in the incident. Another 15-year-old store cook was seriously wounded.
Police have identified the murderer as Abel Elias Acosta. He is still at large and considered armed and dangerous. His father, 33-year-old Richard Acosta, Jr., is believed to have driven his son both to and from the gas station. Richard Acosta was seen on surveillance cameras in the gas station a short time before the incident and has since been taken into custody.
The motive for the killing remains unclear. Police have said it appears to be retribution for an incident that took place before the murder but have not provided any additional detail, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“We now believe that one or more of the victims who were shot inside the were involved in a previous disturbance with which, what believe to be the shooter who pulled the trigger,” said Lt. Barineau of the Garland Police.

Investigators have said that at least one of the victims was Abel Acosta’s intended target, but that Gonzalez and the cook were not intended targets.
Law enforcement arrested and then released another 14-year-old boy who they say has “intimate knowledge” of the crime but was not the murderer. He could still face charges.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help to locate the murderer. Abel Acosta is described as a Hispanic male, 5-5 and about 125 pounds, with dark hair and brown eyes.

It’s unclear precisely what kind of punishment Abel Acosta will face. Texas law allows 14-year-olds to be charged as adults in the most serious crimes, but the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited sentences of capital punishment and life in prison without the possibility of parole for juveniles even if they’re certified to stand trial as an adult, according to the Dallas Morning News.
If convicted of capital murder as an adult, Abel Acosta will be automatically sentenced to life behind bars but will be eligible for parole after 40 years. If convicted as a juvenile, the maximum sentence is 40 years in prison.
Richard Acosta, Abel’s father, has been charged with capital murder.
