The woman shot and killed by Capitol Police this week during an invasion of Congress has been identified as a 14-year Air Force Veteran named Ashli Babbitt.
Footage of the incident has circulated online showing Babbitt attempting to climb through a window inside the Capitol building. A shot can be heard, and Babbitt crumples to the ground. The footage shows officers attempting to render aid, but Babbitt was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital later that day.
“The second that she climbed through the window, she got shot like right in the neck area, fell backwards,” witness John Sullivan told WSVN. “She wasn’t being violent in any way. We just let police officers through. We weren’t trying to hurt anybody at that moment in time.”
Capitol Police Internal Affairs is investigating the incident and have not released any details. The officer who killed Babbitt has been placed on administrative leave.
Robert Contee III, Chief of the D.C. Metro Police, said at a press conference that Babbitt was shot as protestors tried to get through a barricaded door, but he did not say whether Babbitt was armed.
“One Capitol police officer discharged their service weapon striking an adult female,” Contee said. “She was transported to a local hospital where, after all lifesaving efforts failed, she was pronounced deceased.”
Babbitt was a vocal supporter of President Trump, according to a review of her Twitter account. She also frequently retweeted Maj Toure, a pro-gun activist who founded Black Guns Matter.
Police made over 68 arrests yesterday, including 26 on Capitol grounds. At least five of those arrests were for gun-related charges based on Washington, D.C.’s, strict gun control regime. One was arrested with a firearm at the Capitol.

Per the Metropolitan Police Department and NBC Washington, police arrested demonstrators for carrying a pistol without a license, carrying a rifle without a license, high capacity feeding device, unregistered ammunition, unregistered firearm, assault on a police officer, simple assault, possession of a prohibited weapon (taser), traffic-related offense and possession of illegal fireworks.
There are no reports thus far of protestors using firearms against police, though police say the protestors used “chemical irritants” to get past barricades. Capitol police also found at least two pipe bombs in the vicinity.
D.C.’s National Guard will be mobilized for 30 days, according to NBC, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that her state of emergency will continue for the next 15 days – or until after Joe Biden’s inauguration.
“Some persons can be expected to continue their violent protests through the inauguration,” Bowser said.
