Wilson Combat is expanding its line of in-house 1911-inspired X9 pistols for everyday carry with the new SFX9. The SFX9 is a subcompact version with a 3.25-inch barrel and short frame with a 10+1-round capacity in 9mm Luger, or 15+1 with an extended magazine.
Unlike the previous EDC X9 and X9L pistols, the SFX9 uses a one-piece frame machined from a solid billet of 7075-T6 alloy aluminum. The single-piece design makes the SFX9 extremely slim and lightweight but also rugged. Like all Wilson Combat pistols, the SFX9 is meant for hard use, not just for show.
Despite having an all-metal design the SFX9 weighs about the same as a similar-sized polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol at just 25 ounces unloaded. Even loaded the pistol weighs just a hair under 30 ounces. It’s thin at 1.25 inches at its widest. It’s about 6.75 inches long and 4.5 inches tall.
To help keep the gun slim Wilson Combat selected their Concealment-profile Bulletproof slide stop, safety selector and magazine release. The SFX9 also comes standard with their Concealment skeletonized hammer and matching skeletonized medium serrated trigger.
The frame features Wilson Combat’s X-Tac starburst pattern and crossing X-Tac serrations on the frontstrap, backstrap and slide. The top of the slide also has 30 LPI line serrations to reduce glare when shooting in bright conditions. The slide has a black PVD DLC finish and black Armor-Tuff controls and frame with a contrasting fluted stainless steel barrel in the white.
While compact 1911s, particularly compact 1911s in 9mm, can be tricky to make reliable, the SFX9 uses Wilson Combat’s “Enhanced Reliability System” tailored to run a wide variety of 9mm ammunition in a wide range of shooting conditions. Part of this system includes a match-grade single-lug tapered cone barrel with chamber flutes and an external extractor.

Magazine reliability is also a factor, and since this is a double-stack pistol, Wilson Combat tapped possibly the best name in the industry for these guns, Mec-Gar. Mec-Gar specifically designed the magazine body and follower to work with Wilson Combat’s pistols.
Of course, like other Wilson Combat designs, the SFX9 is a fully custom gun, and a lot of details including different sights and finishes are all up to the buyer. Pricing for the SFX9 starts at $2,795, which is in line with their other new 9mm pistols and other comparable custom 1911s.

I am glad to know that my Springfield EMP compares quite favorably at less than half the MSRP. The width would be the same but for its ambi extended safeties, it is half an inch taller because it is single stack (stainless Mec-Gar mags), which means more grip space, but slightly shorter since it has a 3″ stainless bull barrel. It is only 9+1, true, and two ounces heavier, but it too has a forged aluminum frame. Plus the sights are tritium inserts and it has a grip safety like a true 1911. To make it even better, I got it on a killer deal, about $400 off MSRP NIB, and it has been utterly reliable.
