Description: Model 1914 DWM Artillery Luger manufactured in 1915 in 9MM with 8 inch round barrel, walnut grips and full artillery rig. The pistol has matching serial numbers on all major and minor components, including the artillery board stock and three wooden based magazines. The full serial number “873a (or c)” (the lower case letter has some of the characteristics of both the a and the c, depending on which stamping you view) is stamped on the underside of the barrel, on the front of the frame, on the metal attaching fitting of the wooden stock, and on each of the magazine wooden bases. The three digit serial number “873”, without the letter suffix, is stamped on the left front of the receiver. The partial serial number “73”, without the letter suffix, is stamped on the extractor, the front toggle links, the rear toggle link, the safety lever, the safety, the sear bar, the side plate (trigger plate), and the locking bolt lever. The artillery rig is complete with leather holster, double magazine pouch, correct wooden handled 8 inch cleaning rod and correct proof marked take down tool. The top of the receiver is stamped 1915 for the year of manufacture and the front toggle is marked with the monogram "DWM", for Deutsche Waffen Und Munitions Fabriken, the factory that produced this pistol. This Artillery Luger has the correct rust blued finish for the frame, barrel and major components, with straw colored finish for the small parts and checkered walnut grip panels. The right side of the receiver has the three “Crown over Script” letter proofs followed by the Imperial Eagle proof, the correct proofs for a military DWM 1914 artillery luger manufactured in 1915. The Imperial Eagle proof is marked on the left side of the breechblock. The safety and extractor are marked correctly GESICHERT and GELADEN, respectively. This Artillery Luger has the tangent rear sight graduated to 800 meters and a ramped, “non-adjustable” front sight blade. The three magazines that accompany this lot all have the cadmium plated tin magazine bodies with the wooden bases, each of which is stamped with the serial number "873a (or c)". None of the three magazines are stamped with a "+". The artillery rig is complete with a curly figured walnut board shoulder stock that has the attaching iron numbered "873a (or c)" on top, with a newer looking brown leather holster that is marked on the lower front outside flap area "PLATOU & PRIEMER/ BERLIN 1915, with the inside of the flap, ink stamped with what appears to be “FdA.S./1914” inside a box over a larger ink stamping of “FdAS”. The holster has the leather boot covering the stock’s attaching iron. The leather shoulder straps and a leather double magazine pouch complete the rig. The magazine pouch is stamped on the inside of the flap: "ERNEST SEGMOND/DRESDEN/1915" over a boxed "LZA" stamp. These pistols were originally intended to be a light substitute for the standard GEW/98a rifles as used by machine gun and artillery crews. This is an excellent example of an early WWI German Artillery Luger rig with accessories and extra magazines in superior condition, including the stock, leather holster, pouch and straps. Today, the Artillery Luger with complete matching rigs are highly collectible when found. The condition of this example is excellent overall with 97% of the blue finish and only minor edge and high spot wear with some minor blue loss on the muzzle, side plate and stock lug areas. The unmarked wooden grips are in excellent condition with sharp checkering overall and only a few minor bumps on each side. The various small parts for the pistol retain 75% - 85% of their straw colors. Mechanically, this pistol is excellent. The stock is in excellent condition with only minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides from actual field use with 98% of the blue finish remaining on the attaching iron. NOTE: WE HAVE MORE THAN 40 COLOR PHOTOS OF THIS ARTILLERY LUGER. A WONDERFUL COLLECTOR'S PIECE.
