In 1943 Nazi Germany, chronically short of handguns, contracted the Spanish firearms firm Astra to produce an adaption of an earlier Spanish pistol in 9mm Largo caliber, the Model 400. The Germans requested the pistol in 9mm Parabellum and the Model 600 was born. An order was then placed for 60,000 of the Model 600/43. However, only 10,450 pistols were delivered until shipments were halted in July 1944 (first contract) due to the subsequent loss of France to the Allies. After WW2, the remaining pistols were put into storage by the Spanish government. 31,350 were then sold to the West German government in 1951 (second contract) to arm it’s police.
