Youtuber Allen Pan, the purveyor of the channel Sufficiently Advanced, believes that everyone should wear a mask to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Since some folks refuse to comply with California’s statewide facial-covering mandate, Mr. Pan has invented — as a bit of a joke — a CO2-powered launcher that has the capacity to shoot a mask onto a person’s face!
The mask gun, as he calls it, is a bit of a Frankenstein project. It’s made from a brake line, a solenoid valve, an 800 PSI CO2 canister, a spray paint pistol grip, and four magnet-tipped projectiles connected to string that attaches to the mask. Check out the video below to see how it functions.
Pan took his mask gun to Huntington Beach in the hope that he would be able to try it on a few conservative-leaning noncompliers. I’m not sure if he was actually serious about shooting unsuspecting COVID skeptics or if he was going to get their permission all along before he shot a mask at their head.
Based on the video, I’m going to assume the latter. Because eventually, he got some willing participants to squeeze off a few under a pier.
Overall, the mask gun isn’t very accurate (in part because of the unpredictability of the wind outdoors) and is poorly constructed. It broke the first time Pan used it at the beach and he had to, on the spot, fix it with some duct tape.
Cool DIY project or sophomoric high jinks? You can be the judge.
But I am curious, do you wear a mask regularly? And how would you respond if you weren’t wearing a mask and someone fired one at your face?
