Here we have a delightful, affordable upland gun from AyA, one of Spain’s premier gunmakers well known the world over for making solid, well finished guns. From AyA: The N° 4 has been AYA’s standard boxlock design since 1960. It is modelled on a Westley Richards boxlock action, brought to Spain by the King brothers. The Anson & Deeley action, the most famous of all boxlock designs, was created by two employees of Westley Richards in 1875, and ever since, Westley Richards guns have defined boxlock elegance. This early manufacture AyA Model 4, sn386697 was built in 1970, it is a fine upland gun indeed! Weighing just 6lbs this sixteen gauge is lighter than most contemporaries and balanced perfectly just ahead of the hinge pin, can be carried this gun all day with little fatigue, sweet indeed! The 16ga. chambering is known to be extra deadly on pheasants, grouse, quail, dove, woodcock and clays. This gun packs a heavier punch than a 20ga but weighs just a couple of extra ounces! The 28" barrels are of the chopper lump design, long heralded as the very best method of joining the barrels and utilized mostly in “BEST GUNS” from the likes of Purdey and Holland & Holland. The barrels are tight on the hinge and breech face, have mirror bores, tight ribs, 99% blue, and are choked a wide-ranging LM/F with 2 ¾” chambers. The receiver retains 35% factory bone and charcoal case color fading to a nice aged appearance, it has hand chiseled borders and is in perfect mechanical condition with crisp double triggers, auto safety, perfect screws, and timed ejectors. The European Walnut has nice straight figure and hand cut flat-top checkering. Wood to metal fit is outstanding and exemplifies AyA’s dedication to true craftsmanship. The AyA shotgun is known as a supremely reliable gun, and is priced affordably for a hand-engraved, hand-checkered gun-what’s not to like?
