Description: The Winchester Model 37 was a single shot break open shotgun and is considered by many to be an American classic. It was produced from 1936~1963 with 1,015,554 units tooled. It uses a top-cocking lever, breakdown action with an automatic shell ejector. Unfortunately M-37 shotguns were never numbered, making it difficult to determine the date of manufacture.

Research shows that during World War II, thousands of National Guard soldiers were issued Winchester M-37’s chambered in 12 gauge with 30” barrels and full chokes. They were primarily used to provide security of docks, warehouses and factories here at home and many thousands more of the M-37’s were sent over to Great Brittan and issued to England’s Home Guard who were the British civilians that protected the docks, ammunition factories and numerous other security sensitive locations around London.

Interestingly, this Model 37 has stamped on the bottom of the receiver the number 43. It may indicate a year like 1943 or just a unit number to "log in" and record who the firearm may have been issued to. It is also fitted with military sling hardware and exhibits an import mark “Sarco Sterling NJ”. Sarco has been a long time importer of military and sporting firearms from England, Germany, Italy, and Spain for over 50 years.

I like you, wish our firearms can talk imagine the stories they would tell. When you consider the facts that this model was sent overseas to Great Britten, the slim European military sling hardware, the log number 43 and the most importantly the "import mark" strongly indicates that this Winchester M-37 was most likely used by England’s Home Guard during WWII.

The barrel is 30" full choke and is free of rust or dings. The bore is in excellent condition. The wood is free of cracks or splits but shows handling marks consistent with its age. Even though this Winchester seems to have an interesting history it will also make a great single shot field gun for the young shooter and hunter.

As always, thanks for looking.
