There were a total of 305 A.H. Fox C Grade 16 gauge guns built, with only 202 of those made in Philadelphia, likely less than 260 in total remaining on the planet. That sure borders on rare and certainly is scarce. This gun, sn301010 built in 1918 during what most believe as the Fox Gun Co.'s heyday, sports most deisrable 30" barrels in #4 weight, keeping the balance just 3/8" ahead of the hinge pin and weight at 6lbs. even. A VERY delightful gun in hand. This gun has been well cared for and retains almost 85% faded case color and perfect screws, perfect wood-to-metal fit, excellent bores, a great gun that is highly sought after today and will be more so next year. The 30" barrels are Fox's lightest #4 weight choked F/F (can be altered to your specs for $90 per barrel), mirror bores, bore diameter .657/.656, minimum barrel wall thickness 26 thou right, 29 thou left, 98% rust blue, no scratches or dents, 2 9/16" chambers (can be altered to 2 3/4" for $140 but not required to shoot 2 3/4" shells, if you don't know why, ask), ribs are tight, ejectors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, single ivory bead.
The action retains 80% faded case color, perfect screws, exceptionally nice C Grade engraving, action tight with lever way right of center, crisp double triggers, 98% factory trigger guard blue, excellent mechanics throughout.
The wood has nice figure, no cracks or repairs, excellent oil finish, superb checkering and wood-to-metal fit, desirable 1/2 round pistol grip, 14 1/8" LOP to leather pad, 2 1/4" drop at heel, 1 7/16" drop at comb, neutral cast, forend excellent as well.
Fox small bores have become near impossible to find in the last 2-3 years and have continued to grow in value as a result of strong demand and short supply. Long barrels on a lightweight 16 bore appeal to both the upland hunter and the vintage sporting clays crowd, so this gun is more desirable than most of the other C Grade 16's you may see for sale. Fun to know you can enjoy the gun and sell it at a later date for more than you paid for it!
