First there was the Snake Charmer, a stainless .410 gauge single shot manufactured in Littlefield, Texas. We sold a good many of them back in the day, pretty brisk sales at $79 per, while new CBC Brazilian shotguns sold for half that. With an interim splash from H&R and its tamer, the Brazilians are in the driver’s seat again with present company, the Tuffy, briefly known as the Snake Tuffy. It is a violation of federal law to kill many species of snakes, hence Braztech dropped that term from its model name. Numbered model on this variant is S41119Tuf. Manufacturer is Amadeo Rossi, S.A., of Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, a Taurus held company. Importer and warrantor is Braztech of Miami. Type is breech action single shot shotgun. Construction is steel metal, with polymer trigger guard and polymer hand aperture Buttstock and Schnabel type forend. Finish is satin nickel plated barrel and frame, with matte blue steel trigger, action pins, hammer, and breech lever. Barrel is 18 7/8 inch with .405 muzzle diameter Modified choke and brass bead sight. Trigger is .310 smooth faced blue steel, with matching serrated spur hammer. We could three safety features: the transfer bar device that prevents the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed; the mail lever safety on the left side of the receiver; and the Taurus patented internal hammer lock, with two keys furnished. Buttstock measures 9 7/8 inches from the trigger face to the center of the retractable buttplate, and the stock will house four shells. Chambering is .410 gauge, 2 1/2 inch and 3 inch shells interchangeably. Loaded capacity is One Shot. Overall length is 29 7/8 inches; and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what some hacksaw owning fools will be tempted to do to the Buttstock and get themselves some meaningful time in Federal Prison. Weight empty is 3 pounds 4 ounces, with center of gravity midways of the chamber. This shotgun, then, is lighter than a good many pistols and revolvers, and better balanced. Compare against the six pound weight of the H&R Tamer. Our Brazilians did themselves proud with this shotgun, it outbalances and outshoots the Charmer and Tamer competitors, and it’s quite a bit lighter. This specimen comes to us from Taurus’s distribution system. It is what we call a factory demo: a sales rep’s sample, perhaps even a Las Vegas showgirl from the annual SHOT show in that notable city. It comes in its factory box with instruction manual, two keys, and factory registration card. Extra label on top of the box reads, Factory Reconditioned. It carries, writes the label, the Exclusive Braztech Functional Repair Policy, but not on its finish. That means that if it gives mechanical problems, Braztech will fix it, but they will not perform a freebie refinish job. It does not need it anyway. Surface detractions are negligible to minimal, all we see is a tiny scour on the lower left side of the receiver. We rate it as Excellent, perhaps Near Mint in box, 95 percent by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
