Date Code on this Remington Woodsmaster 742’s barrel is E S, manufactured in October of 1969. It comes to us from the estate of its original South Florida owner. The 742 is the most popular semi-auto center fire ever built, and rightly so. These rifles are attractive, durable, and accurate. Manufacturer, of course, is Remington Arms of Ilion, New York. Construction is steel barrel, steel receiver and internal parts, and semi gloss anodized alloy trigger group housing with push button safety that favors right handed shooters. Barrel is 22 inch, 1:10 rifling. Sights have been removed, and this rifle has a Weaver Black Anodized two piece base that will accept any Weaver style or Picatinny style rings or mounts. Buttstock and Forend are original press checkered, DuPont RKW finish. Buttstock length of pull is a short but original 13 1/4 inches from the trigger face to the end of the original alloy buttplate. Buttstock cants about 3/4 inch to the right at the butt, so this rifle will not be comfortable for a southpaw without a stock man working it. Swivel studs are correct Uncle Mike’s sling mounts. Magazine is internal box style 4 shot steel factory, capacity 4 + 1 rounds of .30-06 Springfield caliber ammunition. Weight empty is just over 7 pounds. Surface detractions on this 742 are moderate, principally a series of superficial pit marks on the outer barrel surface, upper right side beginning near the muzzle and extending back six inches. Muzzle shows moderate case contact whitening, and receiver sides bear some inconspicuous finish freckling. We rate this 742 as Good, perhaps Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean with no internal detractions. Bolt rails inside the receiver are full and smooth, with none of the warning sign chew marks a person often sees on 742s. We estimate it has been fired fewer than 200 rounds in the Glades of Florida, and then here in the deer woods of the Forked Deer and Hatchie River in West Tennessee. This is a very attractive, eminently serviceable specimen of Remington’s best loved Auto. Replacement price on this rifle’s descendants in our area is $800 apiece or more.
