From the golden era of Purdey we have this fine self-opener 12ga. in excellent condition. Restocked to perfection with European walnut, strong case color, excellent dimensions combine with a finely balanced 6lb. 6oz. 12ga. game gun for your upland and clay target enjoyment. The case is in excellent condition as well and is fitted to the gun. Priced to sell, this is an excellent opportunity to own the finest of the London “Best Gun” trade in the way of a Purdey. If you know much about London Best guns, especially Purdey, the 1920’s era was when the very best of the guns were produced and are highly sought after by those in the know. Purdey serial number 23618 was built right around 1927.
The 27” Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid steel barrels retain 96% blue, mirror bores choked SK/LM (.004/.016, can be altered for $80 per barrel), bore diameter of .735/.734, minimum wall thickness 30 thou right, 31 thou left, no pits, dings, or scratches, 2 ½” chambers, swamped smooth game rib, ejectors strong and well timed, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, ribs tight and barrels ring like bells, clear sharp lettering with Audley House, London address, barrels well within proof specs, an excellent set of barrels.
The Purdey self-opening sidelock action is in excellent mechanical condition with 98% case color, excellent screws, clear sharp Purdey Rose and Scroll engraving, double triggers break clean at 4lbs. right, 4 1/2lbs. left, trigger guard retains 100% blue, action tight with lever centered, very elegant and the best of Purdey throughout.
The well figured walnut stock is perfectly inletted and checkered complete with drop points and superb wood to metal fit by David VandenBrand of West Olive, Michigan. Dave runs a one man shop and is the ultimate perfectionist. As good as it looks on the outside, it is headed-up to perfection on the inside to insure decades of trouble free use. The English style stock has 14 13/16” LOP to leather pad, 14” to the end of the wood, 2 ¼” drop at heel, 1 7/16” drop at comb, 1/8” cast off, no dings, splits, or repairs, gorgeous oil finish, just gorgeous. Dimensions can be altered to your specs by bending within 10 days of purchase.
I handle a LOT of fine shotguns. As fond of American Classic doubles as I am, Purdey is just the epitome of how a shotgun should balance, close, fire, and operate. To buy a new Purdey is over $100,000 and at least a year wait. For most admirers of fine shotguns a well cared for, lightly used, perfectly restocked Purdey is the best way to experience the best without the wait or full cost of new. The value will not go down on Purdeys as time rolls on, so it is a good investment as well.
