Description: To its credit, our favorite manufacturer from Massachusetts expends much time training police armorers. Sometimes the armorers turn out to be creative, and expertly so when they have access to jigs, lathes, welding, and drilling equipment. Here is a quite creative product that in no way reflects Smith & Wesson’s intentions: a very late production 1973 light barrel, or Pencil barrel, model 64 .38 Special M&P Stainless custom fitted with factory adjustable sights and a custom milled and welded on .540 tall front sight blade. From its D540,000 range serial number this revolver was manufactured in 1973. We estimate that the customizing was done a couple of years later, partly unwittingly at Smith & Wesson expense and likely on Department time. While he was at it, the artist buffed the finish and added a matte blue thumb latch and latch screw. Pachmayr Grips are new replacement, period correct only for the mid 1980s and later. While this revolver may not be the most attractive in the world, it looks like some of the adjustable sight Tauruses from the period that also had very tall front sights. Sights appear aligned correctly, even if the rear sight base protrudes about 1/8 inch forward of the frame proper. Rear sight blade shoulders exhibit some rounding to their top edges as the photos show. Finishwise, we rate this Model 64 as Very Good, buffed; photos, at any rate should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. This revolver is excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap is negligible, only carbon blacking with no cutting whatsoever. The officer who had this was interested in accuracy, not velocity, so we estimate it has had few if any +P round fired through it. Double action trigger pull is tight but smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 10 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 25 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 1/4 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed, no more than 1mm total; and with the trigger fully depressed the cylinder does not move at all. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .007. To the best of our knowledge, this revolver’s service career was spent in the Bay Area of California. We’re offering this one-of-a-kind Smith & Wesson, along with a North Carolina Department of Corrections period correct left hand holster for only $ 369.95. Don't let your buddies use your account. Registered user must be the buyer, with his or her own money. Buying firearms and related items for other people can result in felony charges. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
GA Pay buyers are NOT charged until we confirm we have the item and are ready to ship it. The same thing is true for phone-in, fax-in, and mail-in payments. In this respect, and in several others, Guns America outshines all its competitors. This is the best firearms website there is, hands down.
