During the Chinese Warlord era Shansei Province was ruled by the warlord Yen Hsi-shan. He established a modern arms factory in his capital city of Taiyuan. He equipped his troops with a copy of the Thompson Sub-Machinegun. His problem was the Thompson was chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and his local supply of C96 Mausers were chambered in .30 Mauser (7.62 x 25). Partly due to supply issues with respect to the Mauser ammo, he commissioned his armorer to manufacture a beefed up .45 caliber version of the Broomhandle. Production of the .45 caliber handgun began in 1929 at the Taiyuan Arsenal. They are inscribed (in Chinese) "Type 17" on the left hand side of the gun, and "Republic Year Eighteen, Made in Shansi" on the right hand side. They were issued (along with Thompson SMGs) to railway guards in the province as defense against bandits and other warlords. Most of the these .45 pistols were melted down after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, largely due to their odd caliber for Communist Regulations, but a few examples were exported overseas for sale on the commercial market. Only about 8,500 of these are known to have been made. This was an import I purchased some years back. The direct seller of this item represented that its an original model, not a modern copy. In either event, here it is up for sale. Serial number is low 17xx and year of manufacture is 1929. Though difficult to load without stripper clips, I did manage to test fire it and it does work.
