Ramrod bayonet appears unused.This rifle was issued in 1884 for field trials, but was withdrawn due to the adoption of the Krag bolt action rifle in 1892. It then was issued to the SC National Guard in 1895 and kept in the Columbia Armory until 1945. This explains the scrapes at the heel of the butt plate as it was removed and replaced from its rifle rack at the armory for 50 years. Best I have seen. Must see!
