This isn't a pre-1945, but it's awfully close. Here is a viable veteran of law enforcement in Alameda County, California. This K-38 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1949 or 1950, part of the first ones produced well before we called them Model 15s. We estimate that this Masterpiece has undergone no fewer than three reblues during its sixty years in law enforcement; it is, however, in Very Good mechanical condition. Surfaces are what we classify as Good, multiply refinished. Lettering is still visible throughout, and note that the old style long spur hammer has been reblued. .265 serrated face service trigger is probably armorer replacement from the early 1960s. Freckling to the finish is moderate, and there is a minimal amount, perhaps 10 percent, of superficial pitting. Note a welding mar on the right side of the rib beside the front sight. Grips are refinished ca. 1970. Timing is excellent on this revolver. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times in double action. On single action, the hammer travels 15 degrees after the cylinder times on all six, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is moderate with the trigger relaxed, 2mm total movement by our estimate; but with the trigger fully depressed play is minimal, about 1/2 mm. Endshake is negligible with the cylinder in battery. Cylinder chambers have about 20 percent superficial internal pitting, but the bore is bright, clean, and excellent. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a very tight .004, and blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap is minimal, only etchiness with no cutting.
