From its VL 250000 range serial number, this specimen of Weatherby’s Vanguard VGS was manufactured in late 1989 or early 1990. It comes to us from its original family of ownership. Manufacturer was Howa of Japan; importer was Weatherby Inc. of South Gate, CA. Type is bolt action rifle, with internal magazine and steel pivoting floor plate. Barrel is 24 inch with 6 groove 1:9.5 rate of twist. Chambering is 7mm Remington Magnum caliber, capacity 3 + 1 rounds. Metal finish is matte blue, with white steel serrated bolt body. Weight empty is 7 1/2 pounds. This Weatherby comes with Weaver #35 and #36 scope mount bases, and it will accept any 700 Long Action mounts. Surface detractions are minimal to moderate, only a few streaks on the metal and stock, and occasional freckling to the blue finish. We rate this Vanguard as Very Good, close to Excellent, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Its late owner was only an occasional hunter, and we do not believe this rifle has been fired more than 60 times.
