The Fox SP Grade was introduced in 1932 to ignite new life in the Fox double shotgun. The depression was on, and the Savage owned Fox factory needed new business. Just a year before, Winchester introduced the Model 21, a popular shotgun then and now. Fox saw the opportunity to make some cost saving changes in the appearance of the Fox with the new SP Grade. With its smooth-sided black frame, more rounded stock and action top, the gun appeared more as an English boxlock and similar to the new Model 21. The forend had an ebony inlay and a new shape, but internally it was exactly like every other Fox produced. There were few SP Grade guns made, and even fewer with ejectors (SPE). This fine Fox, sn203907, was made in 1940 and remains in fine restored condition. The gun handles delightfully like most every Fox, balanced perfectly between your hands and weighing 6lbs. 2oz. Simple in its lines and design, distinctively different from the standard Fox, every Fox fan should have an example of a SPE Grade Fox in their collection. Of the total of 146 SP grades produced, about 80 had ejectors, and only a small handful had a Fox/Kautzky single selective trigger. Try finding ANY FOX EJECTOR GUN IN 20 BORE, THEY ARE NOT BEING OFFERED FOR SALE! The rarity and desirability of the SPE makes this a grand investment vessel, sure to appreciate in value as you enjoy its use.
The 26" number 3 weight barrels have 100% blue, excellent bores, minimum barrel wall thickness of 26 thou both barrels, choked IC/LM (.007/.012), tight ribs, 2 3/4" factory chambers, no dents or dings, ejectors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge.
The action has 100% proper dark blue finish, clear engraving, action tight with lever way right of center, excellent screws, crisp Fox/Kautzky single selective trigger, 100% trigger guard blue, strong ejectors, entire action cleaned, inspected, and properly lubricated during the restoration process, ready for another several generations of enjoyment.
The stock has an English flair to it, and in fact the factory hired English craftsman to work on the SP Grade project. Designed more like a round action, the wood is in excellent condition with excellent checkering, no cracks or repairs, ebony insert in forend tip, great wood to metal fit, LOP 13 1/8" to end of factory Jostam "Hygun" pad from rear trigger position (would be 14 1/8" to front trigger if a 2 trigger gun), 2 3/4" drop at heel, 1 1/2" drop at comb, neutral cast, excellent in every way.
The Fox SPE is a rarely seen gun. I attend many large collector shows and shooters who have admired Fox guns for decades are baffled when they look at the SPE. They are delightful shotguns and a great investment quality firearm at a reasonable price. Lightweight and delightful in hand, a true Fox in different "attire", the SPE is a "must have" for the Fox enthusiast.
