Ewell D. Holt was born in 1917, and served in the US Army during World War II as a Tec 4, technical service soldier. He is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Here, we believe, is Sgt. Holt’s father’s revolver. This is a Colt Army Special double action. From its 418000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1916. Type is double and single action revolver, and this Army Special represents a transition between the Old West Lightnings and Thunderers toward the classic Official Police, I frame revolvers of the 20th Century. Caliber is .41 Long Colt, a highly popular caliber at the turn of the 20th Century. Construction is entirely blued steel, with polymer or bakelite original factory grips. Barrel is 4 inch with half moon blade front sight. Weight empty is 30 1/2 ounces, again about the same as an Official Police. At some point, probably in the 1960s or early 1970s, Sgt. Holt had this revolver refinished. Barrel lettering is legible, only the words Army Special are weak. Rampant Colt logo on the side plate is somewhat weakened. Refinish shows residual pre-finish surface pitting on the sides, with some consequent freckling, principally behind the trigger guard, where Sgt. Holt scribed his Social Security Number after he went to the trouble of getting the old revolver reblued. We rate this Colt Army Special as Very Good refinish, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Cylinder chamber pitting is moderate, forward of where a .41 short case would end. Bore shows perhaps 20 percent light internal pitting at the back portion near the cylinder. This old revolver times correctly in all six positions in double action, with no lateral play to the cylinder at all while its trigger is fully depressed. With the trigger relaxed, lateral play is minimal, one to two mm by our estimate. Cylinder times correctly with a brisk cocking motion, or on the trigger pull, in all six positions in single action. This is a solid old New Mexico domiciled Army Special. We suspect, but cannot prove, that Sgt. Holt was related somehow to Henry B. Holt, a Las Cruces Attorney who was closely connected to Sheriff Pat Garrett. We’re offering this Colt .41 Army Special for only $ 569.00.
