From a local West Tennessee collection comes this very attractive specimen of Remington’s first side ejecting pump gun, the Model 31. Law Enforcement adoption of this Remington hit its stride in 1935, when the FBI bought a copy for each of its offices. From its L TT barrel code, this specimen was manufactured in February of 1948. It was issued to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, then, under the First Commissioner of Safety, Hon. Lynn Bomar, and Governor Jim Nance McCord. This shotgun was issued in the Post War Year of our home state, where we’ve never had trouble getting citizens to fight, the problem is getting them to stop fighting, and that was its purpose. We believe that this 31 is one of the first official issue shotguns for the THP, and the 31s probably replaced a duke’s mixture of pumps, semi Autos, and side by sides. THP marking is professional and neat, like our Troopers themselves, and on the right side of the frame. Both barrel and receiver are serial numbered, and the numbers match. Barrel is 18 inch Cylinder bore, chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells, and so marked on the barrel. Muzzle diameter is .722 / .723 vicinity. Finish is period correct and original Remington matte blue, with semi-glossy finished walnut stock and serrated round corn cob type forend. Buttstock length of pull is 13 3/4 inches from the smooth faced steel trigger to the end of the factory blued steel butt plate. Construction is entirely steel and walnut, with the exception of the black anodized trigger assembly housing. Surface detractions are moderate, principally edge wear, light contact scours on the buttstock, and occasional finish freckling. We rate this shotgun as Very Good, close to Excellent, 80 to 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We do not believe this shotgun was fired more than 100 times, since annual qualification protocols were not in place until about 1970.
