Date Code on this Remington Woodsmaster 742’s barrel is poorly stamped; first letter X indicates the Month of August; second digit is stamped over; it appears to be a T, for 1970. Serial number is 7093000 range. This rifle comes to us from its original family of ownership in neighboring Madison County, Tennessee. It has been hunted, but not fired a great deal. The 742 is the most popular semi-auto center fire ever built, and rightly so. This rifle is attractive, durable, and accurate. Sights are 1960s style, solid blue steel base classic 700 ramp and blackened brass blade front sight, with an all steel ramp style windage and elevation adjustable rear sight. Construction is steel barrel, steel receiver and internal parts, and semi gloss anodized alloy trigger group housing with push button safety that favors right handed shooters. Buttstock and Square Edge, distinctive BDL Forend are original basketweave pattern press checkered, DuPont RKW Glossy finish. Buttstock length of pull is the original 13 1/2 inches from the trigger face to the end of the white lined factory buttplate. Buttstock cants about 3/4 inch to the right at the butt, so this rifle will not be comfortable for a southpaw without a stock man working it. Swivel studs are correct Uncle Mike’s 742 BDL series with replacement gas tube bolt on the front and white lined rear stud. Magazine is internal box style 4 shot steel factory, capacity 4 + 1 rounds of .30-06 Springfield caliber ammunition. Weight empty is just over 7 pounds. Surface detractions on this 742 are moderate, less wear to the metal than to the walnut. Blued finish shows edge whitening on the receiver and muzzle area. Buttstock and forend have moderate scouring to the glossy finish, and characteristic moderate peeling on the black BDL shovel nose forend tip. We rate this 742 as Good, perhaps Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Bolt rails inside the receiver show only minimal bolt contact dotting. We estimate it has been fired fewer than 300 rounds in the deer woods of the Forked Deer River bottom. This is a very attractive, eminently serviceable specimen of Remington’s BDL Woodsmaster. For the past two decades, we only get a BDL like this every 2 or 3 years. Replacement price on this rifle’s descendants in our area is $800 apiece or more. We're offering this one, however, for only $ 439.00. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> $20 flat fee lower 48 states; $60 Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, UPS Ground with full insurance coverage.
