Not since Mr. Sam Cummings was at the helm of Interarms have any Rossi Rimfire revolvers hit port in the United States. Photos show our first specimen of the Rossi model 981 Revolver. Rossi revolvers’ indebtedness to the Smith & Wesson design is obvious. On closer examination, however, this revolver is strikingly similar to the classic Colt Diamondback. Barrel is full lug 4 inch, with 3 post .400 width serrated ventilated rib. Instead of the predecessor 851’s Red Ramp front sight, this 981 has a high visibility, bifocal friendly, fluorescent red fiber optic insert front sight that is well protected and secure; and that matches the windage and elevation adjustable rear sight. Manufacturer, of course is Amadeo Rossi S.A. of Sao Leopoldo Brazil, a Taurus owned facility; importer is Braztech of Miami, also a Taurus affiliate. Construction is entirely blue steel, with case colored .375 Semi Target shortened serrated spur hammer that uses flat face against floating firing pin for ignition. Trigger is matching .375 smooth faced combat style. Hammer houses Taurus’s innovative and inconspicuous internal lock stud, and the revolver comes with two Taurus keys. Grips are Taurus ribber type, with pliable ridges that provide for a firm, comfortable grip in foul weather or trying circumstances. Note the frame strength; the top strap measures .300 thick and .545 frame thickness, reminds us of Sturm Ruger’s creations. Cylinder is 8 shot capacity, chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges interchangeably. It will not chamber .22 Magnum ammunition; there is no need for that anyway with the hyper velocity Long Rifle ammo on the market. Note the locking lug on the cylinder yoke, another indicator of Ruger influence. Ejector thickness is about .25 inch, thick enough to eject dirty. The .325 ejection stroke is short enough to prevent case head override where a shooter winds up with the ejector star on top of a spent case. Shooters should always be sure to clean underneath the ejector star; we’ve had Smith & Wesson 650s jam for that reason, and this is crucial with using hyper velocity ammunition like the CCI Stinger or our favorite Aguila Super Max. Lateral play to the cylinder with the trigger relaxed on these will be noticeable; that is not, however, important since the cylinder does not move with the trigger fully depressed. Weight empty is 26 1/2 ounces, with the center of gravity at the front trigger guard junction, right where it’s supposed to be. This is, then, an attractive and well constructed descendant not only of the Smith & Wesson model 34 kit gun; it also incorporates important features of the Colt Diamondback and Ruger SP-101 revolvers. All those command prices ranging from $600 up to well over $1000 apiece. We’re offering the Rossi 951 in the photos, or one of its identical mates, each for only $ 339.00.
