We recommend against inexperienced shooters owning auto pistols in the first place, novice gun owners should start out with revolvers, not with autos. Small autos by their nature must have stiff recoil springs, and that makes the slide hard to operate in order for a person to chamber the first round or unload the pistol. For those with little strength in their grip, and who must have an auto, get a Beretta 21, 950, or .32 Tomcat where a person doesn't have to manually cycle the pistol's slide. Black plastic pistols are definitely not our forte or favorite kind of merchandise; we grudgingly admit, however, that the Kel-Tec is a good gun, strange and non-traditional as it is. The only reason we stock these is because they’re popular, and the little company does deserve credit for innovation and simplicity. Since the late 1980s, we have personally sold more than 1000 Kel-Tecs, over the counter to local customers who actually use and carry them, and we have sent fewer than 10 of them back to the factory for service. Any time a product has less than 3% return ratio; any time, that is, that 3 or less out of 100 of any particular item ever requires repair or service, it is a good product. Kel-Tec is better than that. Here is one of the very first run specimens of Kel-Tec’s True Timber camo finish variant, and the company’s subcontractor didn’t quite get it right the first time around. The post-finish assembly process saw some edge residue from the pink marble coatings; and when they installed the action pins, small amounts of peeling occurred around the pin holes at three places: the trigger pin, firing mechanism pin, and mainspring housing pin at the back upper edge of the frame. Kel-Tec will probably not warrant the finish from peeling, but this pistol is under as good a factory warranty as any Kel-Tec for mechanical reasons. Factory specs are as follows: caliber .380 ACP; semi-auto double action only; 6 + 1 capacity; True Timber finish ultra high impact polymer grip and grip frame; blue finish; integrated sights; weight empty 8.5 oz; 5 pound trigger pull; 2 1/2 inch barrel.
