This Smith & Wesson Model 60 Stainless Chief’s Special is transitional in many respects. Since Ruger introduced the SP-101 .357 Magnum in the early 1990s, Smith felt the competitive heat. By now, all the new steel frame Chief’s Specials that one sees are Magnums. This S&W M60-12 certainly has the frame to withstand the pressure, the later, longer frame with Metal-Injected-Molding, floating firing pin hammer and similarly constructed trigger. Its serial number prefix is CDD, dating its manufacture to January 1999.This Stainless +P Chief is in Excellent condition. Its only detractions from our inspection are a half dozen or so tiny spots, pecks or buffed areas on its left side, and a similar number on its right side. The forward sideplate screw has mild stress evidence. This revolver’s original, issue Michaels Boot Grips are in Excellent Condition, with scuffing affecting no more than 10 percent of their surface area. The bore and cylinder chambers are Excellent. Double action pull is normal, a bit stiff but consistent, and the hammer travels 5 degrees or more after the cylinder times on double action. On single action, the hammer travels 10 degrees after timing, and the single action pull is crisp and light, around 3 pounds by our estimate. Blast effect amounts to only a very small amount of carbon on the frame topstrap underside, directly above the forcing cone. This revolver comes in a generic factory Smith & Wesson brown box that has its appropriate label. We rate this revolver as Excellent, 95 percent +; but we have included sufficient photography for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Replacement price on Model 60s in our area is around $600, but we’re offering this Pre-Lock Stainless Chief’s Special Model 60-12 for only $439.95
