In 1950 Smith & Wesson made history and kicked off a new product line with the small "J" frame Model 36 Chief's Special. Introduced in 1950, the snub nose Model 36 was the first ultra compact revolver chambered for the .38 Special. It was an immediate hit and became the grandfather of a whole tribe of diminutive but powerful short barreled "detective-", "hideout-", "backup-", and "bodyguard-special" revolvers, classics used by police for decades as an official off duty carry gun. Notable in this family is the Model 642 Stainless Centennial "Airweight". The Airweight, so named because of its diminutive size and incredibly light 15 oz weight, has been a best seller since its inception. The 642's ultra light weight, thin profile, snag-proof rounded edges, shrouded hammer, potent chambering, and dead simple reliability make it a favorite of the pro's for self defense carry or backup. Although light, the 642 Airweight Centennial is today rated for a steady diet of .38 SPL +P cartridges thanks to advanced metallurgy. Built on the small "J" frame, this 2" barreled specimen weighs only 15 oz. Finish is S&W's trademark glassbead stainless on the barrel and cylinder with matching matte on the alloy frame. The iron sights consist of a rear snag proof but fully functional fixed notch milled in the top of the frame and a serrated ramp front. Together, the sights form an almost perfect combat sight picture (bold front sight with well defined light bars around it). The Crimson Trace® red laser on this "CT" model is an original factory-installed, grip mounted, low profile unit, fully adjustable for windage and elevation. The .312" case-hardened smooth target trigger is ungrooved, wide, and easy on the shooter. The 642 Airweight Centennial has no external hammer. Instead, the hammer is severely bobbed and completely shrouded (covered) by the frame, making the revolver completely snag free and double action only (DAO). Built into the left side of the frame are S&W's on-board locking mechanism and tapered cylinder release. The well checkered black Crimson Trace grips have molded finger grooves and are full enough to provide a sure grip for all hand sizes. Altogether, the Model 642 CT makes an exceptionally well balanced, light and easy to conceal package with great looks and a natural feel.
