Description: This is a Commemorative Set Commemorates the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimac, also called the Battle of Hampton Roads. On March 8, 1862, from her berth at Norfolk, the Confederate Ironclad Virginia, more commonly known as the Merrimack, steamed into Hampton Roads, where she sank the Cumberland and ran the Congress aground. On March 9, the Union Monitor having fortuitously arrived to do battle initiated the first engagement of ironclads in history. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but Virginia retired. The World’s first battle between steam powered, ironclad warships ended in a draw, but its impact on the future of naval warfare would be profound! This Commemorative Set Featuring This finely produced, 1851 Navy revolver, beautifully decorated with gold etched naval scenes and placed in a glass top display case, featuring this Epic Battle Between These Great Iron War Ships, the first of their kind in annals of Naval War. This beautiful set was produced by the American Historical Foundation and issued in 1991
