Ithaca NID .410 Bore- FIELD GRADE- RESTORED TO NEW
Collecting the Classic American Double shotgun takes many directions. Those collecting the .410’s and the 28ga. guns have fewer choices. L.C. Smith, Parker, and Ithaca are the only three of the big five makers (Fox, Smith, Lefever, Parker, Ithaca) that produced a double in .410 bore.
The Ithaca NID is a very well made and respected double that is the most affordable of the three American makers of .410’s and produced in very small quantities (less than 1000 in all grades, about 790 in Field Grade). Compare that to Parker, at 568 in all grades and 460 in the VH Grade, and then consider that the cheapest Parker you are likely to find in .410 bore will exceed $20,000, and you can see that the Ithaca NID is quite a bargain in the American .410 bore market place.
This little Ithaca was made in 1926 a year after the NID production began. The barrels had some spotting on the blue (no rust) so I had it rust blued to like new.
The barrels are 26” choked F/F (.017/.017), mirror bores, no dents or dings, no pitting anywhere, 2 ½” chambers, ribs are tight and barrels ring true, barrels are tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun, extractors, lettering clean and clear.
The receiver has the cocking indicators, 100% restored bone and charcoal case color, good engraving, double triggers, great screws, trigger guard 100% niter blue, action is tight and lever is way right of center, safety functions properly and all is in excellent working order.
The wood is in great shape and has not been cut like most .410 guns have. It retains nearly all of the original factory finish, has no splits, cracks, or repairs, just a few light handling marks. The checkering is excellent, factory original, and shows no wear, indicating very little use. The length of pull is 14 1/8” to the original butt plate, 2 ¾” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, everything solid as a rock.
There is little wear caused by actually carrying or shooting, as evidenced by the wood and checkering. The gun was in just worn enough condition to justify the historically correct restoration, bringing the gun back to its original factory new glory. This is now a beautiful, honest gun that is a very good investment piece that will surely appreciate as time goes by. The gun weighs in at 5lbs. 14oz. and balances just 1/8” forward of the hinge pin. I have shot skeet with it and what a gas that is. Scores will suffer when accustomed to shooting a 12ga. gun though, be warned!
If you have ever wanted to own a .410 double gun from one of the “big five” of the vintage American double gun makers, this is an affordable way to get started collecting and shooting these very rare little double shotguns. The Ithaca NID is a stout little gun and ready for shooting modern loads. Have some fun and start your .410 collection now! I have more photos of the gun upon request.
