S&W introduced the Model 586 / 686 in the early 1980's as its flagship workhorse for .357/.38 +P police duty and target use. An upgrade to the model 19 police revolver, the 686 series introduced a beefier "medium-large" L frame as a more durable replacement for their hitherto standard medium K frame for guns firing the potent .357 Mag cartridge. Dubbed the "Distinguished Combat Magnum" model, this gun in this 4in format fit the needs of police departments and state highway patrols all over the US in the pre-auto era and became S&W's best selling line ever. This is the model which, essentially drove Colt out of the police revolver business. It is a testament to the 686 that the internals of the recently reintroduced Colt Python closely mimic the action of the 686...at a bigger price. These guns are carefully crafted for combat balance, consistent feel, ruggedness, and precision, and are still renowned for their accuracy, exceptionally smooth DA, and crisp SA let off. The 686 is an enduring classic, built the same way since the 1950's except for improvements in steel strength and minor upgrades to improve function and safety.
This gun is current S&W production built on the "L" frame with a 4 inch "duty" barrel and target sights, which consist of a fixed front heavy notched ramp with red insert and a white-outline rear leaf, fully adjustable for elevation and windage. Finish is S&W's trademark bead-blasted satin stainless and classic case-hardened hammer and trigger, which has a smooth face. The gun has the modern frame-mounted firing pin, and a full length grooved matte top rib eliminates glare along the sight plane. The Hogue monogrip is pebbled with three prominent finger grooves on the front strap to improve control. S&W's built-in action lock security system is installed above the modern scalloped cylinder release. This gun feels great in the hand, and has the ergonomics and smooth action typical of S&W revolvers.
This gun is in NRA (Mod) Perfect (LNIB Mint) condition in its original case with accessories and papers. An unfired display model, this gun has an exterior finish rating of essentially 100% and ships with the manufacturer's warranty. The unfired action is clean and well lubed, and the bore and chambers are pristine. The only wear noted is from normal handling--light burnishing of the cylinder at the lock up points, typical of this model.
