Kel-Tec 2016 – Multi-Mag Sub 2K, NFA Ready KSG, California Bullpup RDB — SHOT Show 2016

SHOT Show 2016
rdb-c kel-tec

It doesn’t have to be 50-state-legal, but it doesn’t hurt to be, either.

Kel-Tec is announcing a few new variants of their most-sought after products at this year’s SHOT Show: the RDB-C bullpup rifle, the Sub-2000 Multi Mag carbine and the KSG-NR bullpup shotgun. The RDB-C is a 50-states-legal 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington semi-automatic rifle, the Sub-2000 Multi Mag is an updated version of their folding pistol-caliber carbine and the the KSG-NR is an NFA-ready shotgun optimized for the short barrel treatment.

The RDB was designed to address one of the main disadvantages of bullpup rifles — case ejection — and is named for it. Short for Rifle, Downward-eject Bullpup, the RDB draws spent cases backwards over the top of the magazine and ejects them downward through a central chute. This prevents spent cases from flying through your field of vision when shooting left-handed and reduces the risk of being struck by hot brass.

This year Kel-Tec is introducing a Communist–er 50 state legal variant of the RDB, the RDB-C — although you don’t have to be behind enemy lines to appreciate this hybrid traditionalist design. Quite a bit was changed cosmetically to appeal to local laws.

The RDB-C has redesigned polymer furniture with a straight fixed stock with a traditional grip and forend. Kel-Tec’s gator checkering follows the lines of the stock, adding texture to the forend and grip for improved handling. The paddle magazine release has been replaced with a more conventional push-button system. It’s ambidextrous, with safety, magazine and bolt release buttons on both sides and a reversible forward charging handle.

Functionally the RDB-C is the same as the original model. Apart from the cosmetic changes to the stock, the RDB-C will be offered with different barrel options, including 17-, 20- and 24-inch barrels. All barrels have a 1-in-7 twist to stabilize the heaviest 5.56 and .223 loads. Other cartridges are in the works, specifically 6.5 Grendel.

The MSRP is expected to be around $1250 for the standard rifle and roughly $1350 for the 24-inch model, significantly less than the original RDB. Kel-Tec expects to have the RDB-C in full production by the end of the year. It will ship with 10-round magazines and uses standard AR-15-pattern mags. Stocks will be offered in black, flat dark earth and olive drab.

Specifications:

  • 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington
  • Capacity: 10+1, compatible with AR-15 magazines
  • Weight: 7 pounds
  • Barrel length: 17, 20 and 24 inches
  • Overall length: 27, 30 and 34 inches
  • Trigger pull: 4 pounds

sub 2k upgrade bolt

Part No. SUB-2000-552, Heavy Weight Bolt

Kel-Tec is also updating their hugely-popular pistol caliber carbine line-up with the new Sub-2000 Multi Mag.  The Sub-2000 Multi Mag accepts Smith & Wesson M&P magazines as well as Beretta 92 and SIG 226 magazines with adapter kits. The updated carbines will be chambered for 9mm Luger and .40 S&W and the MSRP will remain $500, while the kits will list between $30 to $50 and should be available very soon.

A quick note for older-generation Sub 2000 owners, Kel-Tec will also offer a bolt upgrade from now on. This simple drop-in replacement bolt is heavier and reduces felt recoil. Even though recoil is hardly an issue with the Sub 2000, it’s a nice touch.

Specifications:

  • 9mm Luger and .40 S&W
  • Capacity: 10+1 and up, depending on magazine
  • Weight: 4.25 pounds
  • Barrel length: 16 inches
  • Overall length: 29.25-30.5 inches
  • Trigger pull: 9 pounds

Kel-Tec KSG-NR

ksg-nr

Intended to be cut down to make an SBS, the KSG-NR “only” holds 11 rounds.

Lastly, Kel-Tec is giving people the option of buying a short-barreled shotgun-ready version of the KSG  pump-action bullpup shotgun with the KSG-NR, for “NFA-Ready.”  It’s the same popular design with a shortened forend and magazine tubes. Chambered for 2-3/4 shells the KSG-NR has a reduced capacity of 11 rounds, five in each tube plus one in the chamber.

Other neat features include an integral vertical foregrip and built-in flashlight. The flashlight runs on CR123 batteries and is rated at 420 lumens. These will be available through special order from your local gun shop, with MSRPs in the ballpark of $1100.

Specifications:

  • 12 gauge, 2-2/4 shells
  • Capacity: 5+5+1
  • Weight: less than 7 pounds
  • Barrel length: 18.5 inches (non-NFA)
  • Overall length: 26.1 inches (non-NFA)
  • Trigger pull: 5 pounds

Just a heads up, a lot of us from California are doing everything we can to fight these unjust and rediculous un-American laws and restrictions. I was born here and am not willing to run away from my home like a frickin coward just because some stupid law is hanging over my head. I’m willing to work around this bullshit and still have my guns until and after We Do fix this Awesome state. Us Californians need our guns more than ever right now and I praise Kel Tec for realizing this and helping us out by adapting to the crap we’re dealing with. I’m a proud American who loves this country and my state. Thank you Kel Tec!

    • Jack February 21, 2017, 8:18 am

Way to go Hunter. I for one am glad to see all you California gun owners take a stand to this bullshit and take your state back. I am proud of you and all of you trying to retake what is yours. I just recently ran away from my home in MD.after 61
years. Bunch of communists have it now.

  • David May 13, 2016, 10:34 am

Not really sure how to carry this thing. Really used to having an actual pistol grip to hold onto while at a low ready. Yeah I know sling but still. It looks pretty damn sweet though.

    • silly August 13, 2016, 9:01 pm

To bad they’ll be classified assault weapons in Cali by Jan 1. Anyone come up with a mag release dependant on folding the S2K?

      • Buki October 18, 2016, 2:02 pm

No they won’t, its featureless. The laws aren’t changing regarding featureless weapons, only bullet button weapons.

  • M Moose January 21, 2016, 10:48 pm

The bullpups are bad ass. Great job Kel Tec

  • Surculus January 21, 2016, 8:32 pm

If the PRK-mandated grip panel can be swapped out for the regulation pistol-grip after I move to Free America in a few years, yes, I’ll take an RDB-C. If not, I’d rather have the standard RDB with a bullet-button type mag-lock [ie, no “tool-less” mag changes] to bypass the ban.

  • Βζδτξ January 21, 2016, 11:33 am

Any “gun control” so called laws are not valid unless the people believe so. The bureaucrats have zero right to infringe on the Second Amendment and if you believe otherwise, you are part of what’s wrong with Murica.

    • al-babe January 21, 2016, 8:45 pm

murica has as many bureaucrats as “people” . we are in for troubled days ahead. time to round out the wagons. BOND
and know who your friends are. JOIN NRA now. they are with us.
      peace bros.

Hi Hunter,There\’s NOTHING to fight, except ignorance. My friend, there are NO \”gun laws\” in California or ANY other State for that matter! Learn why \”firearms\” are LEGAL FICTIONS; why your License to Carry is a COMMERCIAL CONTRACT; and
\”Gun Laws\” are NOT LAW, they are they are: \”acts authorizing the making of contracts with the government…(Supreme Court reporter at 74 U.S. 666).\”Thank you for your time and attention!Videos:

What happened to the blonde interviewer who would repeatedly nod “Yes” and then smile at the camera? She was hilarious, a nice touch.

  • WiscoGunner January 21, 2016, 11:11 am

I can’t believe how many people whine about not being able to purchase a Kel-Tec! Have you tried??? Go on Gunbroker virtually any day of the week and you can buy a CMR-30, PMR-30, Sub 2000, RGB, KSG, SU-16, PF9, P-3AT and on and on. Be a little patient and persistent and put bids in every day and you will likely get the one you want at a decent price. If you keep tabs on multiple websites, you might even get one at street price rather than retail or way over retail. Wait a few months or a year when a new product comes out and soon the number of available units goes up on gunbroker and the price comes down. Every so often a seller will come along with a bunch of the same thing and put them all up for sale at a price well below other sellers and that brings most of the prices down across the board. Yes, you may not be able to get a Kel-Tec at your local sporting goods store, but there are plenty available online. When the CMR-30 came out, people were paying $1250 (retail is $633). One person even bid almost $2400! I have seen them sell for $635 and $650 in the last 4 weeks. Most were spending $700 to $800…crazy! Be patient and persistent! Kel-Tec is not a mega-manufacturer like Smith or Ruger. They have increased production dramatically and that is why the CMR-30 went from a “ghost gun” to reality and available so quickly.

    • Danny January 21, 2016, 9:13 pm

As a dealer, I have zero incentive to purchase at stupid prices. I’ve had no less than 4 different distributors keeping the Sub 2000, PMR-30 & CMR-30 on my wants list for over a year and they are just not getting them in period.
You wanna be a big player, put out some product. You wanna be a R&D firm, then sell your design to someone who can actually manufacturer some real numbers.

  • Ken January 21, 2016, 9:41 am

“We love California”??? Really? Everybody needs to stop capitulating to these unconstitutional states, therefore creating more reasons for people to fight against it instead of encouraging that garbage.

    • Karl January 21, 2016, 12:59 pm

“This year Kel-Tec is introducing a Communist–er 50 state legal variant…” Now what does Communist mean? Really. So what if something is “50-state legal”? Are we saying here that what you mean is legal in California as well as the other states which have strict gun control laws? Well in that case, I would call it a Commifornia legal instead of Communist. Yeah, I know but really if the Commiforniaists are so dead set on making guns illegal then guess what gun manufacturers you need to stop building guns for Commiforniaists to approve for sale in their state(s). And thus maybe the people of the land of fruit and nuts might decide to get rid of the commies in their legislature and straighten their state out. Yeah, like that is gonna happen.

      • Robert January 21, 2016, 4:00 pm

I offered a solution to the California problem long ago. Make all the law enforcement agencies come under the laws and rules they force on the populace. That would go a long way toward solving the problem. Then if that don’t do it, stop selling guns and ammo in California altogether. When their guns wear out and they run out of ammo they will consider some other options, like getting off the backs of people who never break the law.

    • mountainsquid January 21, 2016, 1:54 pm

Yeah, fuck those gunowners in California, am I right?

What’s great is you’re probably one of those guys who whines about “Californians moving to [state] and ruining it”.

  • Boone January 21, 2016, 9:39 am

Unobtainium, the chief metal in all keltecs.

    • Simonmirsky January 21, 2016, 1:21 pm

      Very clever!

  • Marcelino January 21, 2016, 9:15 am

After many months during 2015, I finally tracked down a Sub 2000 9mm second gen 2. Paid a bit over the regular price, but that was the price. A very, very accurate and concealable carbine. Shooting the bowling pins and steel challenge meets with open sights have made me the attraction. People come up and want to know; where did I get it. I tell them that looking for a unicorn is easer than finding a sub 2000.

  • Rip January 21, 2016, 9:01 am

I would not buy this for 2 reasons, ! for the com pliancy issue and the 2nd who wants to shoot an uncomfortable thumb over the top .

  • Danny January 21, 2016, 8:56 am

In stead putting so much effort into R&D, KT should move those people over to production. What good is it to have a big product line if you can meet supply and demand. They appear to be a terribly managed company. They would be better off if they made one gun that everyone wants and then actually produce them.

    • WiscoGunner January 21, 2016, 5:51 pm

Just a head’s up. One of the so-called unobtainable guns from Kel-Tec, the CMR-30 can be purchased on GB right now for $675. Another seller has 5 of them at a buy now price of $699. Yes, over retail, but most people who can’t wait are willing to pay extra for the “new thing”.

  • Retrocon January 21, 2016, 7:54 am

    A new 2016 update for the Sub2k? Cool…

Can’t wait not to see it on the shelves of my local gun shops. Did the 2015 version ever actually ship in volume?

The newer versions of this are almost as mythical as .22 rimfire ammo sittng on the shelves at walmart.

  • Chad January 21, 2016, 7:45 am

Awesome! More Kel-Tek weapons that will be in short supply.

  • Jay January 21, 2016, 7:05 am

I just don’t understand how companies go through all the trouble to design and manufacture these 50 State compliant/communist compliant weapons! Well yes I, do it’s the money! More time and effort from these firearm manufacturers should be spent on restoring the nations infringed upon 2nd amendment rights! I will not buy 50 State compliant weapons and support those who willingly abide by those infringements and thereby are showing acceptance by making firearms the communist way. We have lost a lot over the last few decades and its not over so “We The People” better wake up and make a stand where we can! To me when we buy these communist compliant firearms we are giving in to the governments wishes! Just my thought and I don’t give a rats ass if you agree with me or not because I Am Not Politically Correct and never will be!

    • Andrew Reeves January 21, 2016, 8:05 am

Thank you for speaking up. I agree with your thoughts and I will pass on the word. NOT to buy 50 states compliance weapons.

    • Mac January 21, 2016, 8:55 am

I like Kel-Tec’s innovation but given their low production, the markups for shops that have them is extreme. So it’s funny to me that they show some new vaporware when I still haven’t seen their stuff from shot show 2015 on shelves and their first version sub 2000 is still selling for nearly double MSRP. The icing on the cake is that they are building 50 state compliant firearms when they can’t even supply a decent number of their current product lines. Yeah, gain access to new markets while demand continues to outstrip supply…

    • Tripwire January 21, 2016, 9:47 am

      Roger that

    • Daniel January 21, 2016, 1:08 pm

You hit the nail on the head!!!! Michigan

    • Seth Winterhawk January 23, 2016, 5:20 am

Not certain I even know what 50 States Compliant means….

    • Dan528 January 24, 2016, 11:59 am

I agree 100%! There should be no comprimises concerning the 2nd amendment. Every time a gun mfg modifies a design to meet some illegal state government rules just for the almighty dollar, they are undermining the 2nd amendment, clouding the real issue and diluting the public’s understanding of it. We must do everything we can on an individual and industry level possible to make everyone understand it is very simple.. “Shall not be infringed”, period!

      • JOHN HOGLIN May 23, 2016, 3:38 pm

If you could market with a few changes a product to a country with over 33 million people would you do it? You bet you would! S&W and Ruger have all stopped selling their semi-autos here in the Not so Golden state. But for us stuck here we are still Americans an want to exercise our 2nd amendment rights as much as possible, to do that we need guns. So all you anti 50 staters don’t buy them, but don’t screw your fellow citizens in other states.

      • John Hoglin May 23, 2016, 3:48 pm

Really? No compromises, none at all. Do you buy all your guns on the black market? You smuggle in all your ammo ? Try to think before writing, Age limits, back ground checks(GOV APPROVAL TO BUY), Taxes on ammo and gun accessories, special shipping just to get a gun. Now tell me how you are fighting the “Infringed part”. Truth is the GOV has more and better guns and can and will shut off you gun rights when they want to. All they need to do is stop ammo production. Then check Credit card records for purchases and clean out all the hoarders of the last several years. So before you screw over your fellow country men in not so free states remember: We must all hang together or hang separately.

  • Dan January 21, 2016, 6:44 am

Interesting….. I’ll believe it when I see it! Based on keltec other product releases!

  • Mark January 21, 2016, 6:39 am

Remove the magazine capacity by 4 rounds, and raise the price. No thanks on the KSG-NR. The 26″ standard KSG is short enough,,no need for a short barrel ready version. Thing would kick like two mules! I currently own two KSGs and have 5-6k rounds through the pair..love them!

  • Chief January 21, 2016, 6:39 am

I would wait and see what kinks they have to work out before I bought one .BUT I would rather just grab a Tavor and be good to go .

  • Jacob January 21, 2016, 3:44 am

I want that rfb c for no other reason then that it looks cool and I want it in my bullpup collection. If I could get it in 300blk I would prefer. And because you put it right about 1200 msrp I will totally get this. 1500 and I would not . I’m hoping street value is 1k

    • Ron January 21, 2016, 1:43 pm

Looks like it will not be available though until end of the year according to Keltec.

      • Hunter November 9, 2016, 10:56 pm

Whoops , that last comment from me was meant to go on that thread talking about the new kel Tec’s coming out. There was a lot of bashing I read on there about kel tec making ca legal stuff. Sorry about that going in the wrong box. I was heated. Lol
