A Sub-$450 Bolt-Action Ringing Steel At 1,800 Yards — Mossberg’s Patriot Predator

I fondly remember picking up my grandfathers old dusty, faded hunting magazines and reading about hunting rifles. Unless you were buying a rifle from Kenny Jarrett, or other custom builders, sub-MOA rifles were nary to be found. Sometime during the late 90’s or early 2000, factory rifles started to appear that could produce MOA results with factory ammunition. These days, companies guarantee MOA accuracy and owners seem to fly into a fit of panic if their new rifle fails to group 1.047 inches at 100 yards. I recently got to spend some time behind a Mossberg Patriot Predator rifle, chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, and had no problems hitting a 24-inch plate at 1,800 yards. How times have changed.

It was also perfect for putting two of Remington’s newest firearms to the ultimate predator hunting test. On a two-day hunt, we’d be using two modern takes on Remington classics—the 870 DM Magpul & the Model 700 Magpul.

Modern Hunting Bullets

Modern Hunting Bullets

Times change, and technology changes along with it. We hunters have an irrefutable connection with the past; we discuss our favorite cartridges — often with opinions based upon the experiences of our forefathers — and we long for the opportunity to recreate those hunts made famous in the hunting literature we adore so much. However, I feel that if our hunting heroes of yesteryear could’ve had the opportunity to use those tools that we now have available, they’d embrace them immediately. And among all the improvements we’ve seen in the last half century, I rate modern bullet development at the top of the list.

Expansion results when fired through FBI heavy fabric were picture perfect.

Ammo Test: Barnes Barnes TAC-XPD 9mm +P

This Barnes TAC-XPD 9mm +P load is capped by an 115-grain, all copper projectile with a hollow point cavity big enough to hold your morning Cheerios. And they expand perfectly. If you are looking for an ideal carry round, consider these.

Expansion was picture perfect for all projectiles fired.

Ammo Test: Barnes TAC-XPD .40 S&W 140 grain

Why does .40 get such a bad rap? Is it because of its association with the government? Is it nothing but a dumbed down 10mm? Barnes has some .40 S&W that just might make you change your mind.

As you can see, expansion was picture perfect, even when fired through four layers of fabric.

Ammo Test: Barnes TAC-XP .45 ACP +P

Barnes has offered pretty amazing projectiles to other ammunition manufacturers and reloaders for some time. More recently, they’ve launched their own line of loaded self-defense handgun ammunition. Available in .380 ACP, 9mm +P, .40 S&W, .45 ACP +P and .357 Magnum, we’re going to be trying out most of them over the next couple of [...]
